Thought I would start a new post regarding Masks.
I agree with Judy that a mask can be really good for your skin. I have been using Glymed Oxy. Radical Mask for years. I probably use it twice a month. It is very soothing to my sensitive skin. In a post to Crissey I stated I did not feel I need a mask. I was referring to a mask with Argieline in it as I am using product with that ingredient.
Curious to hear from you on masks you LOVE. I would consider changing masks as Glymed has been out for years and maybe there is a better one. |

I use two masks once a week.(not at the same time of course) Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask. And the aspirin mask.(dissolve6-8 uncoated aspirin in a few drops of water, pat on face.Leave for about 10 min.) Some people add either honey or aloe vera gel to the mask to help it adhere. Great bha exfoliant. |

Although I've yet to try, I've heard absolute raves on masks by Anna Bellina (website annabellina.com). She has a milk ambrosia mask that is supposed to be out of this world.....
I'm trying to decide between the Naomi mask and one of Anna Bellinas. I think for now my pocketbook can more affored the Anna Bellina.
Sigh.....bye bye paycheck.

Just thought of something. No one as far as I can see has mentioned CA Bontana products. They sold them at the salon I worked at. They are so yummy!!!! They also have some great masks. Don't know if you can buy them on line or have to get in a salon. Their prices are very good as far as I can remember. LOVED their bath products. Their Coral C mask is great. Always had that after a facial with Seaweed Mask under it.
Just checked it out: Can purchase from their website. |

Very interesting thread! You know...I've never really used a mask very much. Maybe just a handful of times in the past 10 years.
Is it just the pleasure of winding down and relaxing or do they really do anything for your skin? I just never figured out what they did for me and never knew which ones to buy.
I have normal to dry 43 yr old skin. I don't have really large pores but I can see them. They don't get very clogged unless I use too much moisturizer. I rarely break out unless I start a new topical medication or use something really strong and then I go through that dreadful purging period (on my chin). I have fine wrinkles and loss of firmness around my eyes probably from too much smoking.
Any suggestions for me?

I use masks all the time - probably more often than I should (i.e. at least 3 times a week) I think that they are both for me; a form of stress relief and also good for my skin as well.
Cheri - I would say a nice moisturising or firming mask would be good for you. I highly recommend Dr Hauschka Rejuventaing Mask, and also Valmont Renewing Pack (as a splurge pick-me-up treatment). I'm also liking the Eminence Organic masks and some of the Lush masks (the fresh refrigerated ones). I've ordered the Dr H Firming mask as well and it should be arriving shortly. Can't wait to try that one, will report back |

I'm also addicted to masking, so I mask about every two days. One of my favourite masks is the dermalogica skin refining mask. It's not harsch and my skin feels refreshed everytime. |

Well naturally, I couldn't pass this subject up without putting my 2 cents in.
Of course, I use the Naomi masque (also sold under the name Esthers Secret) and I love it.
Certainly there is the relaxation aspect of putting on a masque and relaxing for 25 minutes (today, I woke myself up slightly snoring, I confess). I guess I got pretty darn relaxed.
When I began using the Naomi masque, there is an initial 90 day program where you use it 3 to 4 times a week or up to everyother day during the first 90 days. Now that I'm past that period, I use it 2 to 3 times a week, unless it just gets so hectic that I can't. The results have been that my brows have a more lifted look; I can see more of my eyelid, improvement in the firmness of the upper lid; improvement in the lines and crepiness below the eye; nasio-labial folds all but gone; firmer and more lifted in the jaw and cheek area; improvement in the slack neck skin.
I thought I'd post some general info about firming masques and what they are supposed to do for those of you who haven't tried one and are considering it. I would say this info would apply to any good firming masque. I found these comments on the internet.
"As the masque dries to a complete tight nasque, the skin is stimulated and nourished by the increased surface circulation. (You actually feel the pulsating effect. It's like isometric excercise for the face and neck)."
"As the masque tightens, it reduces the excess fluid in the face that can cause puffiness and add to the appearance of lines. (I can verify this personally as I've seen significant improvement in the puffiness below the eyes and that has seemed to lessen the lines. I had never learned before that a firming masque reduces fluid in the face. That's good!)"
"When the masque is removed, the skin appears much finer. Pores appear smaller, puffiness and fines lines are reduced, a tightening lift to the face may be seen. Often, the face is slightly flushed, as if you just finished a workout... and you have for the face. This is due to the increased surface circulation, cleansing, nourishing, and stimulating the skin from within."
I do think everyone should understand that the effects of a firming masque are actually temporary. But, that's basically true of any facial product. Your face creams and serums are temporary in the fact that if you stopped using them, eventually, your face would go back to the way it was before you began using them. Any beauty routine has to be maintained. But I do find that the improvements last longer over time and used it consistently. For instance, when I first used a firming masque, the lifted brow lasted 3 days. (I say brow, singular, because I did a 1/2 face lift to test it) After about 2 months, the lifted effect would last 5 days. My friend is only 40 and her initial lift lasted 9 days. (Wish I'd started earlier!)
That's another point about a lifting masque. You can use it for a special occasion when you want your skin to look especially refined. In other words, if you're going somewhere special, or have a special date, use the masque the night before or better still, that day.
Naturally, there are many kinds of masques for many different purposes and each person has to choose what they need for their special skin situation, and the needs may differ at different times and at different ages. I'm 60, and don't want to look 60, so I'm big into the firming masque.
The Naomi and Esthers Secret masques contain aloe babadensis gel, argireline (not 10% but the masque doesn't need 10% as the serums do because its purpose is different); Acacia (stimulates collagen); Anti-oxidants such as grapeseed extract, green tea extract, echinacea extract and Vitamins A, D3 and E; cucumber extract (soothing); and allontoin(moisturizing). There are a few other ingredients, but those are the main ones. And part of the effects comes from the stimulation of the muscles that support the facial skin.

Do blackhead/pore clearing masks really work? When I say "work" I mean not only do they "bring them to the surface," but actually come out without applied pressure aka sqeezing (which im addicted to and need to stop)...if so then I would love to hear some recommendations. Like Masby, I'm a mask junkie. I find that if I steam before I mask, the mask seems to work better. Conair makes this GREAT mini at home steamer called "The Facial Spa." You just add water and any favorite facial steamer concentrate (Dr. Haushka and Jurlique here) plug it in and turn it on. It takes 3-5 mins for the water to boil (ie to create the steam)..and u just put your face up against the plastic thingy and voile! I bought it at Bed Bath & Beyond in the states for $20.00. I'm sure conair sells it on their webpage too for all you international peoples interested.

I really wanted to try the Dr H masks, but I couldn't bring myself to pay $45 until I get used to masking and determine what they will do for me. I may find that I'm really too lazy for them . So...I ordered a Mario Badescu Enzyme Revitalizing Mask ("made with Papaya. An Alpha-Hydroxy based mask that helps stimulate cellular growth, improve tissue vitality, and hydration")for $20. I also ordered the Silver Powder ("For the most stubborn blackheads, this powder helps break up clogged pores and absorb oily build-up for a healthier complexion") for $12. Will report on the results.
I do suspect I'll eventually have to give in to my lemming for the better masks. Sheesh..I need another * spam alert * like I need another cigarette.

Did some say Mask, I simply love them. I have seen a major change in my skin after using a mask and keeping with it's routine.
I usually make my own clay masks but recently tired OPC mask by Jurlique and Hydra-matt regulating maksk by decleor. (not sure of the names) I may never make mask again except for the orange one.
OOOhh that Dr. H clay maks sounds good.
Gosh if someone mentions another masks i may have to file for bankcrupy (sp?) preety soon. |

littlebo,
Politely butting in here, aspirin is a derivative of bha. So the aspirin mask helps to clean pores and the thick paste help exfoliate.
If you are allergic/sensitive to aspirin, do no use this mask. Some people turned red from it. Most people seem to love it. I really didn't see it improve my skin much. It made my face smooth but sort of dry. My pores remained clogged.
You can read the reviews on MUA (makeupalley.com).

To add to what mtview wrote, if you have asthma you should also be very careful using the aspirin mask (little particles of it fly off your face and it can be quite irritating if you are prone to breathing problems).
phredd4 - I got the MB Silver Powder a couple of weeks ago. I still haven't had a chance to try it yet (product overload here!) but I'll give it a go this week. Would love to hear your opinions of it.
I'd also like to recommend Eminence masks to everyone. Hard to find, pricy, but *so* nice. I'm still hoping EDS might pick up this line in the future (well, I CAN hope! ). |

Thanks mtview, I was just going to suggest looking at makeupalley.com for aspirin mask reviews. On me it helps if I have flare ups or clogged pores. Just like any skincare, what works for some might not work for everyone. I only use it once a week. It can make you sneeze like the dickens though. [/quote] |

Mabsy,
I just ordered Dr Hauschka Firming Mask and his Moisturizing Mask. Not a bad deal on ebay....$19.99 each with an expiration date of 2006. Did you ever receive and use the firming one? I can't wait to get mine. I rec'd the Mario Badescu Enzyme Revitaling Mask this week and I didn't really like it for my skin. My skin seems to like the masks that don't dry on the skin.
I also bought a drugstore mask (3.99) by Got2B called "mash masque" and I am really loving it. The effects lasted well into the next day. This is the only one I've liked so far and I can see how one could get addicted to masking when you get the desired results.

Edited to ask Belle: Does Dermalogica's Multi vitamin power mask dry on the skin or is it just a rinse off? |

phredd4 - Yes, I got my Dr H mask last week sometime but have not had a chance to try it I'll give it a go in the next few days though.
Thoughtcrime - I fully agree with you. I love both of those. I also ended up buying the pumpkin/orange mask and I'm not very fond of that. I tried the Stone Crop one last night and figured out that I like that one also (but not enough to buy it - the herbal mud one is first on the list!). |

I ordered Yonka Moisture Quenching Mask from EDS yesterday. Dermalogica's Multi vitamin power mask is next on my list. Wonder if I can use a mask every day? Anyone ever do this?
Also, I'm so excited! I live in a really rural area and thus never was able to get a professional facial or any other spa services. One has opened up about a hour and a half from me. I want to get a facial first....$60 for the 60 minute facial or $30 for the 30 minute Mini-Facial. I want to get the eyelash tint too for $20.
From the info on their website they don't use a wide variety of skin-care products. They mostly use Dermalogica and Ecco Bella. Oh I can't wait!

Cheri,
I think it would depend on what mask you were using. Say your skin was very dehydrated then you might use a hydrating mask every day for a period of time.
I have a feeling that I go overboard with masks. I use one almost every day nowdays but I do vary the ones that I use. So I do make sure that I only use a deep cleansing or exfoliating mask twice a week. In between those days I use hydrating masks, radiance masks etc. That could be overkill though but I just enjoy the process of it - I find it de-stressing.
Looking forward to hearing your expriences at the new spa! Ecco Bella skincare products look nice! I'm a sucker for natural skincare though. But have can something like Organic Dark Chocolate Mask be bad? http://www.eccobella.com/index.asp?sectionstr=Skin+Care&cat=160754&cartstep=minfo&prodid=1214415 |

Cheri,
Have you gotten your masks that you ordered off of ebay? How are they? I am often tempted to buy skin care off of ebay, but then I chicken out.

Oh yes it was great! Expiration was Jan 2006 and the products were boxed with instructions just like you would buy it from a store. The only thing you need to watch for is the exp date if you know the products should have one. If it's not posted on the auction I email them and ask. Also I won't buy "testers". Just read the fine print of the auction or email them if you want to make sure. Personally, like Gucci, I've experienced 100% satisfaction, but I always do my homework and ask questions about the auction.
