Is it really possible to lose 10 lbs. in 10 weeks? I need to do this!
I work though, and don't usually have the energy to go to a gym after teaching all day, so, (when I am not too burnt out) I just do some weights and floor exercises at home when I can't get on a treadmill.
I eat lots of veggies/fruit/yogurt &/or some lite cheese, and don't eat junk food (well, I have to have my morning coffee and my Healthy Choice chocolate (splenda) ice cream bar(s)) & don't eat much meat.
Any tips on what I can do to lose this weight would be appreciated!! |

Can you lose ten pounds in ten weeks? That depends on your situation. Have you already lost some weight? Because women who manage to lose some weight tend to find it difficult and slow-going to lose that last ten pounds.
Either way, I highly recommend the book, "French Women Don't Get Fat" by Mireille Guiliano. I lost ten pounds in about two months by following the advice in that book. I still follow it and have kept the weight off easily for almost two years without diets or formal exercise.
Also, you might want to do some research on Splenda and any other sugar substitutes/diet foods you might be eating. There's a lot of evidence to suggest that they cause weight gain.
Hope this helps. |

You can lose almost 10 pounds very quickly just by changing your diet, because water weight is the first thing you shed and it can be quite significant! Both on the scale and in your appearance. |

Hi alohagirl! Can you expand some on this please?I'd love to know what kind of advice is in the book... I mean is it "dont eat unless you are hungry" and "take smaller portions" and " dont eat until you are stuffed", or is it actually nutritional advice?
As for losing ten pounds in ten days. Cabbage soup diet and daily excercise would do it. |

Thanks alohagirl, edenfield, and catski!
Sounds as though I need to get a little more cardio in. Well, the semsester is almost over, soon I will be at the gym on a more daily basis. I think I will look into replacing my chocolate bars with tangerines to calm my sweet tooth. I believe Splenda does actually act as a negative carb - similar to white sugar.. and will look into the cabbage soup and drinking a little more water (I drink a fair amount as it is)..
Alohagirl, I am interested in knowing more about the book, too. Is it more on common sense eating approaches, tips on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, deal with stress, etc? |

Okay, the suspense is killing me!
What's happening in ten days?
If you have a wedding, a class reunion, or a date with George Clooney, I can totally empathize! And will pm you with info. Gotta be hot for George!
If you're just eager for bikini season, I urge you to take it slow and not risk your health! Slow, steady weight loss is healthy, and involves lifestyle changes, not quick fixes.
But...I used to act and model, and some of the things we did back then were truly insane. Anyone ever heard of the "Jello & Cottonballs Diet?"
Not making it up, I swear!
A few years ago, I did the Body For Life contest. I deliberately porked up so my "before" pictures would be really gross, and my "after" photos would be dramatic, and I'd win the million dollars! Heh...
Two days after my scary "before" photos, I get a call from my biggest crush. He'll be in town in two weeks and wants to stay at my place!!!
Total panic, and two of the most intense, painful weeks of my life. I went from 175 to 141, and with a spray tan and a corset looked totally hot fourteen days after I was the fattest I'd ever been in my life!
I won't tell all the details, because it was like one of those extreme sport shows you see on TV that have the disclaimer "Warning! Do NOT try this at home!" I'm really lucky my hair didn't fall out and I'm not dead!
Long story short, the tour bus broke down, the club hadn't promoted the show, and my Mr. McDreamy was mad as a wet hen. I got to enjoy his company for just under two hours, and off he went, back to Los Angeles, where women are all eighteen and size zero.
The moral of this story is: Slow and steady wins the race! Nothing is worth suffering and endangering your health for quick weight loss!
Except maybe George Clooney He probably has a private jet and not an old decrepit bus... |

Heather, you are so funny! I was in such suspense reading your post, I had to grab the pistachios and munch while reading about Mr. Mc Dreamy and the weight gain.. Men....
By the way, what is the jello and cottonball diet? And how did you lose that weight so quickly? Night and day cardio?
Oh, it's not a wedding (my SO is very sweet, but a bit of a poor, starving artist - I like staying a Ms...), no reunion, just want to visit family and wear a bathing suit without all of the extra around my butt and thighs.. not to mention looking for a new job looks a lot better when I fit my clothes. Wouldn't hurt to be ready - just in case George Clooney comes walking by, either....... |

One of the best weight loss tips I got is to only eat sitting down at the table, even if it's just a snack. When you eat in front of the TV, read a book, listen to music or even when you're on the computer, you aren't able to listen to your body and you'll overeat. There's also something about taking the time to sit down and focus on the actual food. You'll find you tend to eat more of what your body's actually craving. I'm a boredom snacker and sometimes when I sit down, I find that I wasn't really hungry afterall.
Another great tip is to drink a glass of water before each meal. Apples are also supposed to be a great snack, if you leave the peel on the fiber keeps you feeling fuller longer (plus they're good with peanut butter which is a super food- especially if you can find ones that have omega 3's and are naturally sweetened). Avocados are another amazing food because the fat is good for your heart (skin and hair too) and the fiber content is really high.
Be cautious of some "Low Fat" and "Low Calorie" foods because most companies use more sugar and additives to compensate for what's been taken out. Check your yogurt, you might want to try temporarily trading it for regular if the sugar is lower and the protein content is higher. I try to stay away from most processed foods, but it sounds like your normal diet is already very healthy.
But most importantly, I can not stress this enough - do not overeat and tune in to your body. I hit a plateau and my weight didn't budge for over a year (ok, it budged up 2 lbs here and there but never down past a certain number). Once I tuned in to what my body wanted and stopped overeating, I droped 3 lbs below my plateau and I'm still losing. It's incredible because I've tried every diet food known to man and this has been the best advice ever.
Good luck! |

Not really. It's more like a list of ways French women are unique in their approach to food and staying thin. For example, a typical French woman collects expensive clothing, one piece at a time. These purchases are considered investments because she has every expectation of staying the same size all of her adult life. All she has to do is follow the beauty and weight loss advice which was handed down from her mother, who in turn was taught by her mother. (I went to France a few year ago and saw for myself that overweight women are rare.)
The book reveals what their secrets are, like a recipe for Leek soup which acts as a diuretic to get rid of excess water weight. And eating satisfying, flavor-intense foods (quality instead of quantity). Two of Rockalilly's tips are in there too with regard to really appreciating everything you eat. You're satisfied with less if you eat sitting down and focus your full attention on what you're eating.
My favorite tip is one I use every day: French women maintain their weight (equilibrium) on a daily basis. If they overindulge one day, they make up for it by eating less the next day. It's much easier than the American way of letting yourself get really overweight before trying to do something about it.
I love the sequel book too (French Woman for All Seasons) which goes into greater detail about the typical French woman's lifestyle, wardrobe, beauty secrets, etc. |

popping in with my experience here- the Sonoma diet has been great for me. They have an online version or a couple of books. They do it all for you- (You do have to prepare your own food.) But each day is layed out with three meals and snacks and the recipes to do it. The secret to me was portion control, if nothing else I learned how to fill a plate properly. The best thing- the meals are really good, my whole family enjoyed them so I did not have to fix something different for them and have temptations in the house. It is more of a lifestyle than a diet, the idea being to learn to eat right and once you reach your goal to be able to maintain that becuase you have developed good habits- it has been the best for me. |

All good suggestions. I'd check my yogurt for sugar some are plumb loaded. I'd also get rid of all prepared munchies and all starchy stuff. Have salad and meat rather than pasta. The only white things that are good for you are cauliflower and fish. Keep good munchies around (crisp veggies and dip). Use strong flavors: arugula, watercress, garlic chilli powder all are satisfying and good for you.
Drink green tea. Liquid keeps you full and green tea satisfys the appetite.
Good luck. |

I really think it really is a matter of lifestyle changes for me. I believe the "French Women" reaffirms the basic theories that my mother used when I was growing up.. and I basically continue... just got out of whack for awhile. My partner can eat like a horse and gain very little weight, and so, at dinner, I have indulged in larger portions in many a meal myself.
But basically my problem is that I live in an area where the food is really not as appealing for me, and everyone tends to eat more here. Especially at work! Teachers actually eat that cafeteria crap they make for the kids, only the cafeteria gives the teachers about three times a normal serving! Not to mention the endless flow of cheetos and chocolates that you have to be diligent and say No to. Sometimes it is hard though. Lunch time is short and high calorie things are just sitting there waiting to be eaten. But, I really do not relish the flavors of those foods, so I have stopped eating any junk foods.
Oh, alohagirl, actually I have lost about 20 lbs., and now want lose the last bit - the hardest to get rid of. The leek soup recipe does sound interesting! Hot weather is almost here though, so I will probably make plenty of cooler things such as a cold gazpacho soup, too.
Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble and sharing your great ideas everybody! |

Hi Ahihi!
Good for you! Staying a Ms. is a good thing IMO, and losing weight for an event is almost certain to result in regaining it afterwards...
I'll share with you some of the safer things that worked for me. They may not all be right for you, but maybe one or two might help!
1. Intense morning exercise. I hate mornings and this one was hard for me, but it's VERY effective!
Plan your routine ahead of time, and organize everything for yourself before you go to bed.
Get up fifteen minutes earlier if necessary, make a double expresso if you're like me and need a little something to get your eyes open, have your favorite energizing workout music ready on your iPod or stereo, and just do it!
Some of us go to the gym, some of us exercise at home, and some of us run out the door if we like to run for our cardio. There are many great fitness programs out there--too many to count!
I like what Shawn Phillips has to say, and his abs are so amazing his torso doesn't look real! His brother is Bill Phillips of the Body For Life program. I like Shawn's program better. I have his book Absolution and the website iswww.bestabs.com.
To shape the butt and thighs, I like The Firm's video "Standing Legs" and the Super Callanetics videowww.callanetics.com
They kicked my butt (no pun intended!)
Anyway, if you do a half hour or more of *intense* exercise every morning (I like to do seven days a week but make one or two days something fun and different, like Hot Yoga or rollerskating.) your metabolism gets a big boost for the rest of the day!
2. Detoxify your body. Supposedly, one of the reasons it's hard to lose the last bits of fat is because our bodies store toxins far from our organs, and they become trapped in our adipose tissue. There are many great detoxification books and websites, and it's a whole subject in itself! I got a far infrared sauna (the portable one that looks like a tinfoil turkey tent) and an ionic detox footbath device, and a book called "Fat Flush" by Ann Louise Gittleman.
I also did weird things like homemade mud wraps and seaweed baths, but these clogged up my bathtub and were a giant pain.
3. Honestly, the one thing that did the most was:
I have attention deficit disorder, and the prescription medicine Adderall that is used to treat it speeds up metabolism and suppresses appetite. I had stopped taking it for two months before the contest, and started again when I took my "before" photos.
If you think you might have attention deficit, see your doctor! It was truly lifechanging for me to be able to find my car keys every day, and the added weight loss was nice, too.
Best of luck--you're sure to reach your goals because you have a great attitude!
P.S. The book "The Weight-Loss Cure "They" Don't Want You To Know About" by Kevin Trudeau (and the websitewww.naturalcures.com) had some great tips. I know Kevin Trudeau is a controversial figure, and fifteen colonics in thirty days may not appeal to everyone, but there is some interesting stuff to read, that's for sure! |

So, to sum it up, here are some things needed to do to lose those 10 lbs:
*Eat leek soup for dinner
*Eat cabbage soup for dinner
*Check the sugar content in my yogurt
*Sit at the table with all meals – don’t eat in front of the computer or t.v. (Except my morning coffee and kashi bar)
*Drink more water
*Keep the splenda chocolate bars out of your system (see “Detoxify”)
*Be in tune with your body, don’t eat if you’re not hungry (and have eaten enough)
*Maintain good habits – it’s a lifestyle thing
*Exercise early in the a.m. (after morning coffee, that is)
*Look into callanetics (and other exercise DVD's)
*Detoxify (natural foods only, no complex cleansing systems – no time to be near a bathroom)
*Read “Fat Flush” and "French Women"
*Don’t eat out, don’t eat brie, olives, bread, starches, chocolate (one piece of dark chocolate on occasion, maybe, but, don’t plan on including sweets or sacchirines)
However, Heathercolorodo, that bestabs.com site was a little gross. Sorry, but his abs kind of look grotesque to me, guess I am not looking for anything that drastic, and 15 colonics in 30 days sounds like suicide (who knows what that would do to your insides?). I am not ADD, but do not think I would be interested in taking Adderall even if I were… but then again, I can’t accurately assess a medicine that I am not familiar with. I think a great way to rev up the metabolism is to eat things like grapefruit, keep it natural –
Thanks again guys! |

It's not really a "recipe" just a simple way to get the benefits of leeks. You just wash and dice a few leeks, then boil them in a few cups of water until tender. When the author came to America for a while, she gained a lot of weight eating the typical American diet. She tells how she lost it after returning to France, and it started with leeks. She recommends jump-starting your weight loss by spending a weekend consuming nothing but boiled leeks, and drinking the water they were boiled in. This is also a good way to get your "equilibrium" back after over-indulging during the holidays.
It's worth buying this book because it's not your typical diet book. You don't have to deprive yourself of things you enjoy. In fact she recommends eating chocolate every day and reveals secrets like how French women can eat lots of bread and butter, plus wonderful pastries, and still keep their figures.
Because of this book, I went from a size 12 to a size 8 (same size I was in high school), and I can eat whatever I want. I'm actually enjoying life more too, because that's a central theme in her two books. French people tend to place a high value on enjoying the simple pleasures in life. |

by the way, ten pounds in ten weeks is not hard, now ten DAYS - that would be tougher. |

Just raw vegetables, or raw fish (sashimi), too?
Yeah, actually this week I lost about 2-3 pounds! And I haven't given up my (splenda) chocolate ice cream or cheese - and I only worked out once this week! Maybe it was that ton of sashimi and raw oysters that I ate last night that did it.. I guess I really need to firm up once the weight is off though.. that's the real problem.... How to get my legs toned? Arghhhhh.. |

Walking several blocks a day in high heels is what gives French ladies their shapely legs. (Works great for me too!) Or if you're not one for heels, try bicycling up a slight incline, even if it's just a stationary bike at a gym.
And by the way, the seafood probably gave you a high-protein boost which could account for your quick weight loss. (Think Atkins diet)
The raw fruit and veggie diet works miracles for people who have enough willpower to do it without cheating. I have a friend who did it for 3 months. She looked fantastic--lost 30 pounds, clearer skin, brighter eyes. But of course as soon as she stopped, she went back to her old eating habits and gained it all back. That's why the French book worked so well for me. It changed my relationship with food, which will benefit me for a lifetime. |

alohagirl - This is interesting. I have never heard of heals helping with legs shaping. I am a high heel person, and have been wearing heels since I was a teenager. thanks alohagirl, that is very interesting. I actually really dont like leeks.. but I guess I could disguise the flavour with plenty of cayenne.

I think exercise is easier than walking a lot in high heels... I walk a lot and I walk fast. If I want to wear high heels for a special occasion I carry them with me and I change into them. It's SUCH a relief being able to put on the comfy shoes at the end of the night! |

If you want nice legs, i would never wear high heels to get them. The best workout for your whole body would be skip rope. When i was younger 13-16yrs old i would always wear high heels everywhere i went. Yes, i did get some great calves..but my feet and back suffer from it! I don't think ruining your feet and your back is worth getting nice calves... it's not like they shape your thighs or anything. |
