I just took 20 pictures of myself and my daughter on her camera phone and I looked horrible in every single one of them. My teeth looked spaced, my eyes looked tired and I looked like a ghost. This really did nothing for my self esteem.

One word. Photoshop! Smile I use it wayyyy to much. I did a photoshoot with a gf of mine and photoshopped her pics. She didn't even look the same..it was kind of funny! I think i went a little nuts...but hey, she looked hot, what can i say? Smile

I Photoshopped my university graduation photo before I sent it to my parents!! But really, I can relate to this topic so much - sometimes I think I must have body dysmorphic symptoms. I look in the mirror and think I look reasonable but when I see a photo of myself I shudder in horror and it upsets me for days - pathetic. I can remember feeling exactly the same way when I was a teenager, however when I look back at those photos now I see that I really looked quite ok. Sometimes I think it's all to do with low self esteem, something that I am guilty of I'm afraid.

Oh, and when my passport expired recently I went to about six different places trying to get a photo that I liked Shock of course, with no success.

I know exactly what you all mean! I refuse to believe that I look as bad in person as I do in photos. My face, parts of it flatten out and look fat in photos. Maybe it's lighting and angles; I really do think that the lense distorts in some ways. I've even asked my husband - "Do I really look like that?" He always says, "you look way better than that!" So either he's being truthful or completely uxorious Laughing

This past weekend I was at a white-tie event. One of our out-of-town guests actually brought her own photographer with her. She was lovely, very well-groomed and done-up, hair, makeup (some lifting in her recent past, too, I'm sure) and all, but not drop-dead gorgeous, either. But you can bet her photos will be stunning. I watched how she held her head, posing, almost, and did this instinctively, and the photog knew exactly how to capture all that. He's obviously worked with her, and she's no stranger to photographers.

So until we have our own pro taking our shots, I don't think any of us should worry about it so much. I'm going to believe my mirror, for now!

Ugh! Zephyr! She sounds like the event is just a backdrop for.....HER!!!! Some local celebrity, no doubt.

Sure, fawnie, I can share a little! The lady in question is from California, and isn't someone I'd call a celebrity at all - maybe in her own mind, Laughing Just someone with a ton of money, and her charitable work is considerable and noble. I assume the photos will be used to promote that work and hopefully pull in some more $$$ for it. To her credit, she is very hands-on, not just a money-pot for this work. She is a member of the organization the event was held for. But until a few weeks ago, I'd never heard of her. And the event wasn't all about her, believe it or not!

My husband is also a member of this group, along with many people here in Chicago, and was on the committee (did I spell that right?!)that put the two-day event together. I'm not a member, but I helped, and we're all exhausted. We also had the horrible rain and flooding to deal with; members came in from all over the country and flights were really messed up.

I dressed formally but simply - long gown in dark navy georgette silk, with reddish-purple underlining that showed through, navy pumps, and no hose. I didn't go strapless, or even sleeveless. This may sound weird, but unless I'm just with close friends, I feel uncomfortably exposed without something covering my shoulders. I didn't want to mess with a shawl and I was too busy, well, making certain everything with the dinner flowed smoothly. We had about 100 people.

That night, I didn't want any photos taken of me! I think that I looked haggard - I certainly felt that way. Well, certainly not my best. But the event went well and that's all that counts!

Hey thanks everyone for making me feel like I am not the only one. I detest taking pictures and hate looking at them, it really does destroy all of my self esteem. My daughter has an extremely photogenic face and looks good in every picture that she takes. Her friend is very pretty but never looks pretty in pictures.

Yes, I feel the same way but I think we just think this of ourselves because people tell me I look fine...or great in some pictures Smile

Gosh, I hate being photographed. Don't have a smooth complexion like a lot women do so I always avoid the cameras.

Have any of you looked into a mirror with a friend or watched a friend look at themselves in a mirror?

Try it sometime when they are, say, trying on a dress or are checking their makeup. Their reflection doesn't look anything like they do when you are looking at them face to face.

I have a few friends that are really attractive in the flesh and yet their reflection is very 'flat' and not at all complimentary.
