I always wonder if the names matter when it comes to cleaning supplies such as laundry detergent, dishwashing detergent, or those table, toilet, sinks, and bathtub cleaning solutions. All I see is the price difference but I'm not sure if it performs the same? Anyone has any experience? Smile

I have found this is trial and error. Some no name things are ok and others are not.

Sorry I know thats not much help but I think there are variables such as water types (especially for cleaning the bath)that can make a difference when cleaning also.

I would the no name stuff a try and see what you think.

I try not to bring too many chemicals into the home and stick to just a few essential products. I do find a difference among products and stick to what works for me and doesn't have very strong odors, allergies.

the brand is really important, especially for our skin.
anyway, we have only one face--if the skin is destroyed, no doctor would help us to save it!

So which particular brands of household cleaning products would you recommend for use on delicate facial skin?

I buy no-name just about everything. Cleaning products, tissues, lightglobes, tinned goods, etc. etc. These days many of the brand name products are re-badged so you are quite often buying a brand name that is packaged differently. BTW, this is especially true of cosmetics.

In these days of mass production the old adage of "You get what you pay for" is not necessarily true any more. I once had a huge fight with a flatmate because I bought no-name butter (she wanted a brand name). So I went out and purchased the brand name one and guess what - both had identical batch numbers and product codes on them. They had been manufactured by the same factory and packaged differently!

So if you're really worried about a cheaper brand - just look at where its been manufactured and its ingredients.

If I may make a suggestion, what about spending a little extra money for products that don't perform heinous animal testing, don't destroy our precious eco-systems, and don't cause or exacerbate health problems due to caustic chemicals? I'm a STRONG believer in using earth-friendly cleaning brands such as Method, Seventh Generation, etc. Not only have I found these products to perform better than their big name brothers and sisters, I love the feeling of peace that comes with having a clean (and lovely smelling!) home that hasn't come at the expense of the environment, our animal friends, or my health.

Here are some of my absolute faves:
*Seventh Generation Blue Eucalyptus and Lavender Laundry Detergent: This stuff cleans clothing beautifully, and ever since I started using it my clothes smell sooooooo good! I don't even need fabric softener anymore!
*Seventh Generation Lavender Floral and Mint Dish Liquid: This stuff is gentle on my hands, and my kitchen smells awesome after I wash the dishes.
*Method Lil Bowl Blue Toilet Bowl Cleaner: Finally a toilet bowl cleaner that works well and yet I don't have to be freaked out if I accidentally get it on my skin!
*Method Window Wash Glass & Surface Cleaner, Mint: Streak-free shine, refreshing mint fragrance
*Method Wood for Good Furniture Polish: Makes wood look brand new again and OMG the fabulous almond scent!

I second manslayerliz! While obviously not all "natural" products are perfect for the environment (as with skincare!), there are definite advantages to the good ones -- and I don't think you sacrifice much at all in terms of cleanliness quality.

A few of my favs:

*Ecover dish detergent (for hand washing dishes) scored 2nd in a Consumer Report test of all brands -- natural or otherwise!

*Trader Joe's concentrated liquid laundry detergent.

*Ecover stain remover.

*Method wipes -- like Clorox or something, except these are made of soft bamboo and don't smell bad!

*Castille soap (Dr. Bronner's) is very multi-purpose. We dilute it in a foaming hand soap pump.

*Baking soda mixed with a little liquid dish soap is a great "soft scrub."

Haven't found a HG toilet cleaner yet, but I may try manslayerliz's suggestion. Didn't mean to hijack the thread, but I HTH!

KBLang--- I LOVE those Method wipes! I have em in lavender and they really rock. I used to use those Clorox wipes, but I was always so scared to touch em with my bare hands. No such fear with the lovely Method wipes!

I buy SOME stuff generic/no name. It really depends - sometimes its just not the same, especially if its a food product.

I buy no name sandwich or snack bags (for daycare, for my son), but will buy Glad or Ziploc for freezer foods...

I think *some* generic brands are not as effective as others - President's Choice stuff from Superstore is PRETTY DECENT. I'd even buy their bagged fruit/frozen foods/veggies.

For household products, I usually buy brand name stuff but make sure that it does double duty.

Methods ones are great! Gentle on hands!! I don't mind the Lysol ones either - they have new (at least, new to me) scents too Smile

hhm I believe the Method brand is sold in Superstore too? As for the other brands, I never heard of it....not that I'm an expert in cleaning supplies Embarassed

I'm not those that go for brand names. I look more at the quality & price and like what everyone said, if it's friendly to the environment too. Smile

Method is available at Target, and most grocery stores in my area (I'm middle of nowhere Pennsylvania) actually carry Seventh Generation. Those that have a natural section also carry Ecover. So I don't even have to necessarily go to a "natural" store for my cleaning products. I also order from drugstore.com too. HTH!
