I have a few things really My faves are Dr Hauschka lip balm, Decleor Lip Balm (this is SOOOO yummy!), and Carmex mint stick. I used to use Burt's Bees as well but I have a sneaky suspicion that at some stage it began to dry out my lips Perhaps something else was the culprit but I haven't used it since.
I also exfoliate my lips a few times a week (when I remember) with my toothbrush. A little trick I pick up here
What do you use littlebo?

Well I have been using Molton Brown vitamin lip saver which is really nice. Also I don't know if you have heard of it over there I think its an English brand called Liz Earle (an all natural product line) there lip balm is called superbalm, which can we used everywhere, dry lips, elbows, cuticles, frizzy hair (although I have not tried it on the hair..a bit scared about that!) A good alrounder |

Mabsy, I had the same experience with BB. I loved it at first, but after awhile, I really felt that it was just sitting on my lips and not doing anything. I also started noticing that my lips felt very dry during the day. That is when I made my first venture (never to look back) into the world of Dr. H. I love their lip care stick. I have tried both the stick and the balm and honestly I can't tell much difference in their moisturizing ability except that maybe the balm is a bit slicker on your lips than the stick. I prefer the stick because I don't like to stick my finger in the balm's pot because it gets under my nail

Littlebo - well that crosses Molton Brown off the list for me! Thank you! Btw, what are the "star" products in the Molton Brown range?
Liz - I have both of these as well. The stick form resides at my office and the pot by the bed. The pot is a bit of a pain, especially since it is quite narrow so it's hard to get it out. I usually scrape it with the top of my nail to avoid getting it under my nail (if you know what I mean). I like them both though |

I agree with Mabsy, carmex is great! and exfoliating your lips with a toothbrush is a great way to get rid of the dead skin. I also use vaseline on my lips at night. |

Hi Mabsy,
I really like the Molton Brown Vitamin Lipsaver actually! Its one of my faves but I like the Liz Earl one for night time as it smells of lavender. Very nice and relaxing.
As for the rest of Molton Brown they do lovely aromatic shower gels which really feel like your pampering yourself. Other than that I think it is quite a basic range. |

I have been using a lip balm that I purchased from Homemadesuds. It contains Emu Oil. Love this ladies products! The Emu Oil really softens the lips. My only problem with it is it does not contain a UV protectant.
By the way, I love this forum. I am learning so much. Been reading it for awhile and recently decided to join. |

I use Desert Essence Lip Rescue with Shea Butter nightly. On nights when I need extra help, I use Aquaphor. I love Aquaphor, much better than vaseline, imho. |

Your lips are the one part of your body that don't exfoliate themselves. So if you want kissable lips, you have to exfoliate! Some people can do it only twice a week, but some people need to exfoliate everyday. There is a set that you can get that will do the trick for you: Satin Lips. You can visit http://marykay.com/PWS/SkinCare/LipsEyes/998000.aspx?Moniker=faithe to check out the product. Try it Risk FREE and if you mention that you're from this forum I'll ship it to you for FREE! Happy Kissing! |

Vics on lips? I never thought of that. What does it do exactly? Does it have exfoliating properties? |

*chuckle* Yes, Vics is tingly on the lips--a eucalyptus mentholatum kind of tingle similar to Hall's Mentho-Lyptus drops, so if you're planning to kiss your honey, make sure you confine your smooches to the neck up, lol!
I picked up this odd habit many years ago from my mother-in-law. She kept Vics in a tiny lip gloss pot and every once in a while she'd take it out and dab it (oh so southern style--she was a true Georgia peach) to her pretty lips. My mother-in-law was a beautiful woman and I was only 19 or 20 at the time and clueless about skin care, so I adopted her little beauty ritual. And it was cheap--yay! She told me that before she went to bed, she dabbed a smidge of Vics just inside the tips of her nostrils, too. She said it helped to open up the sinus passages while sleeping, especially during the winter months when forced-air heat could be so drying. Of course I tried it and she was right--makes you breathe easier and sleep like a baby. A tiny jar of Vics on my night table lasted years.
Somewhere along the line I lost touch with the Vics ritual. As I recall, my older brother went off on me once about how weird it was to use Vics VapoRub on my lips, so I decided to upgrade to Bonnie Bell Lip Smacker (purse) and Carmex (night table). I recently compared Carmex and Vics ingredients, suspecting they were distant cousins:
Carmex active ingredients: Menthol, Camphor, Alum, Salicylic Acid, Phenol. Inactive ingredients: Fragrance, Petrolatum, Lanolin, Cocoa Butter, Wax.
Vics active ingredients: Camphor, Eucalyptus Oil, Menthol. Inactive ingredients: Cedarleaf Oil, Nutmeg Oil, Special Petrolatum, Thymol, Turpentine Oil.
Yeah, I kind of freaked when I saw that last inactive ingredient in Vics, but then I thought about my mother-in-law. She just passed away a few months ago, in her eighties and still beautiful. She had never been hospitalized for any diseases and simply died of old age. No doubt she kept a tiny pot of Vics on her bed stand to the very end, and still had lovely southern belle lips.
Having read this thread a few days ago, I remembered the Vics ritual from years gone by and dug it out of the closet (the reason I read the thread in the first place is because my lips were dry and a little peely, even though I use Carmex daily). I've been applying Vics twice a day for the last couple of days and, well, the bottom line is the peely stuff is gone and my lips feel smoother. My brother can yell at me all he wants but I think I'm going to go back to the basics here, bless my mother-in-law's Scarlett O'Hara soul.

I think I might give Vics a go I need to get some too because we ran out just a few weeks ago (it's heavily used in my household when people have colds, headaches, feel nauseous etc). I have put it just under my nose before and it DOES help with breathing (particularly when you're sick).
Thanks for the tip (and the lovely story! ).

Based on rave reviews over at MUA, I just purchased Eucerin Aquaphor Healing Ointment (no, it's not marketed as a lip product, per se and you'll find it in the lotion aisle at most drugstores or supermarkets) and this stuff is awesome. Before bed, I slather on a layer of the Aquaphor then "smush" in some regular granulated sugar to make myself a lip scrub (brushing w/ a soft toothbrush would probably work just as well and be less messy!). Then, right before going to sleep, I put on a thin layer of Aquaphor and when I wake up in the morning, my lips STILL feel hydrated and I've never had that experience before, not even with the amazing lip balm that's part of the (overpriced b/c you can't buy the pieces separately) Benefit Dr. Feelgood Lipscription kit or with the DDF Glossy Lip Therapy, which were the two products (I layered them at night to get maximum effects) I'd used before stumbling onto the Aquaphor. The Aquaphor ointment isn't "glamourous" but it surely does the job -- but don't just take my word, go check out the other glowing reviews on MUA from satisfied users!! |

Whatever you put on your lips make sure it is not medicated. Carmex for example is medicated and it will dry out your lips because it is used to dry up coldsores. The reason why people say they are addicted to carmex is because it keeps drying out their lips and they continue putting on more thinking that will help. I hope I helped you some! |

I've heard the same thing about products containing petroleum that it is addicting (vaseline, smiths's rosebud salve, carmex, etc...), and from personal experience it appears to be true. |

wow, i'm learning new things everyday reading all these great posts from you guys
i never really ventured out for lip care anymore, because outta all the one that i've tried, the only two things that won't get me those swollen flaring gold-fish lips are vaseline and prescriptive's lipsticks...
now i know why i keep putting on vaseline yet don't feel my lips are ever moisturized enough...
thanks for sharing the info!! you guys are great definitely gonna try some of the balms suggested!! |

I find that whatever lip balm I use, it works for a while, then, if I don't have it on all the time, my lips dry out, especially bad in the winter, but actually all year long. I am dry skinned, head to toe and have a hard time finding products that really improve the state of my skin and are not just a short term reliever. Right now I'm using Burt's Bees Beeswax lip balm. Do you think beeswax has that same addictive property that petroleum does? |
