My fiance and I are going to Chile and Argentina in mid-Nov through the beginning of Dec.
Has anyone been to either of these countries before?
Can you recommend what to do and where to go?
TIA! |

Hi,
I have been to only Argentina of the two countries you mention. We went to Buenos Aires and Iguazu falls. The Iguazu falls are amazing!! We wanted to go to Patagonia to see the glaciers but did not get time. I have heard very good things about it. Mendoza is the wine region in Argentina and Bariloche is like the lake district.
Enjoy your trip! |

Hi VL,
Thank you for your reply. We bought a book about Argentina, and it does look like Buenos Aires and Iguazu Falls are must-see places. Mendoza sounds pretty as well and is close to Chile, but I guess if you don't drink wine, it might not be the best place to visit. If I were a wine lover, it would be my first choice. So I guess Buenos Aires and Iguazu Falls will see us. |

Hi,
I would definitely recommend seeing the falls from both the Argentine and Brazilian sides. We stayed in the Argentine side and did a day trip to the Brazilian side (after we had done the falls from the Argentine side the day before). We had booked the whole tour with a travel agent in Buenos Aires (including the flights to and from Iguazu falls). If your budget allows, the Cataracas hotel was very good. We stayed at a cheaper hotel and wished we had paid slightly extra and stayed at the Cataracas one (it was right opposite our mid-range one). You can see the foam from the falls in the distance from the 5 star hotel in the park (am forgetting the name of the hotel).
Am sure you will have a great time! |

Thanks, VL. Did you have to get a visa to cross over to Brazil to see the falls? I heard that Brazil requires visa.
Thanks for the recommendation on the hotel. We definitely need to check it out.
Which tour agent did you use? Was it one from your hotel? |

Hi,
depends on your passport nationality. My parents needed the visa as they have an Indian passport while I did not as I have a UK passport.
In my view, it is worth getting the visa for. But why don't you check photos on the website to decide? From the Argentine side, you see the devil's throat from the top, on the Brazilian side, you see the panoramic view of the falls and are under the devil's throat (not right under). I think both views complete the visit.
We asked for recommendation from the hotel and then checked both the recommended agent as well a couple of others. Went with the recommended agent in the end. |

I would also recommend the boat ride! it's exhilarating!!!!!!! you go close to the devil's throat and then they take you under one of the smaller falls. It's great. |

Hi!
Buenos Aires is a BEAUTIFUL city!!! It resembles Paris and Madrid, but it has all that latin passion!
Must see/do:
- tango shows
- sightseeing including various districts such as Recoleta (kind of "bourgouis", nice-old-fashioned-respectable); Palermo Hollywood (very artsy, hippy-ish, lots of fantastic boutiques with very creative beautiful clothes); Puerto Madero (very modern, fashionable, great restaurants, hotels, discos) -- this is enough for 3-5 days
- steak houses!!!!! Never and nowhere in my life had I better meat than in Argentina!
Travel to Patagonia if possible; it's mind blowing!
I also went to Salta -- it's in the north of Argentina, it's very charming, colonial, and the scenery around it is unbelievable -- we crossed like 4 ecosystems (from rocky desert to Alpine emerald hills) in 3 hours!
And btw, Argentines are very beautiful people - both girls and guys
I haven't been in Chile, but i've heard it's very beautiful and the food is fantastic.

I've been to both countries many times, though not since 2004.
Expect lovely, late-spring weather in Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile in late November/early December. I worked in agriculture, so have been through the countryside in both countries, and they're nice, but I prefer the capitals, both of which are beautiful. Each has plenty of shopping, street fairs, museums, music, wonderful food, and great people-watching. Also, especially if you speak any Spanish, manicures, pedicures, waxing, facials, etc. are less than in almost any US city. If you like the seaside, Viňa del Mar is an easy day trip from Santiago. So is the wine country. The beach at Mar de Plata is further from B.A. - if I recall correctly, I flew there as it would have been a long drive.
Yes, citizens of most countries need a visa to enter Brazil, and a visa costs $100 per person for US citizens. (Brazil is retaliating against the $100 per person US visa fee instituted post-9/11, and I don't blame them. The Brazilian families that used to flock to places like Orlando would have to pay an extra $400, $500 or more just for the visas.) Iguazu Falls are spectacular, but I don't remember a whole lot else to do in the area. I only went there once, and it's been a while. |
