So a new derm. prescribed both Benzaclin and Minocin yesterday for my cystic acne.

What can I expect to happen if I decide to just use the Benzaclin alone? I hate taking antibiotics. Does the Benzaclin make your face red? I have alot of dark red marks from acne...will these worsen?

Also, he told me to quit using my current cleanser and start using Dove bar! I REALLY don't want to use bar soap on my face.
Can you suggest a cleanser that will work nicely with the Benzaclin? Something to remove light makeup as well.

Thanks Smile

Hi:

I hate to tell you, but if you have cystic acne, there is a pretty good chance that an oral antibiotic + topical like the one your doctor prescribed will not drastically reduce your cystic acne.

I would go back to your derm and talk about a combination of BCP and a topical (clindamycin, differin, tazorac etc.)

Lots of luck to you. On the upside, you probably won't need to take those antibiotics.

Let us know how things go. Take care.

Benzaclin and Minocin and is not a good plan for cystic acne and probably wont help much.

The minocin will help some but you can really only use it a few months so you would need have another action plan in process. Dont be afraid to tell your derm if you dont want to use oral antibiotics, I always refused them.

I also would not use Dove bar. what cleanser are you using now?

Finding the right BCP can help alot but this can be hit or miss finding the right one. For me that along with tazorac helped alot.

Well Minocycline helped me tremendously, and I've also used the Benzaclin. I didn't really have any side effects that I noticed with the minocycline, but the Benzaclin dried my face just a tad. Nothing that couldn't be resolved with lotion in the morning.

I've always used Olay foaming facial cleanser for sensitive skin, it has no fragrance and it's very non drying. I highly recommend it.
