I am buying a Mac this weekend...I'm looking at the MacBook Pro (15inch). I'm curious because the new ones just came out and they are selling the old ones (by a day) for $500 less....anyone think I should spring for the newest one and skip saving the money? I'm not real computer literate so I really just need it to do some basic photography stuff (hi res pics) and some video editing.
I would love to know if there are Mac users out here...what do you have and how do you like it. I've read tons of reviews but I trust you all more than the tech sites.
Thanks! |

Hi Olivia,
I'm a MAC user and bought the 17" MacBook Pro a few months back. I LOVE IT. It's way faster and more powerful than my old G5 desktop. Mine's a 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo and it's more than powerful enough to do any photo editing or video editing (I have the Adobe Creative Suite and Studio 8 on mine and have never run into any problems).
The new chips (Intel Core 2 Duo) will offer some increased speed (it's says 39% faster on the Apple website), but for the average person I don't think it would be enough to really make a huge noticeable difference. I'm assuming maybe it might mean it was a few seconds faster than my current computer? The new chips are also 64 bit compared to 32 bit on the older model. The main advantage to the 64 bit is that it's able to handle larger chunks of memory and data, although you probably wouldn't notice any difference with the current version of OSX. The other advantage to the newer model is slightly better power management (ie. you may see better battery life).
So it comes down to the price. I always like to buy the best I can at the time, so if having the latest and greatest is important to you then I would splurge for the ones with the new chips. However, I know you would also not be disappointed with the slightly older model as it would more than suit your needs.
HTH!! I'm always excited to talk to a potential new MAC user. ![Very Happy](images/smiles/biggrin.gif) |

Awesome! That is just what I was looking for. I was going to buy it a couple of months ago but someone told me to wait becuase these new ones were coming out....I like to have the latest and greatest but these suckers are SO expensive if I can save a few bucks and still get all the computer I need I would like to do that. I'm going to the store tomorrow morning so I'll let you know what I buy. I just wanted to make sure the "older" computers would be "enough" for what I am after.
Thanks! |

Are you buying it from the Mac store? If you look at MacConnection and other places, they usually give you a lot of free stuff, and if you tell this to a Mac sales person over the phone, they'll start to kick in stuff.
I have a PowerBook that I got from Mac Connection along with a free photo printer, 500 mb ram upgrade and a travel case. Mac didn't offer the case, so I went with MC.
Ordering something that big online isn't for everyone, but if you know what you want, you can get a good deal. |

Olivia no matter which computer you buy, it'll be out of date 5 minutes after you plonked down your money Some Mac users are waiting on the next Mac Expo when Steve usually announces some new upgrades/OS (Leopard coming in 2007) before buying and if you can wait, then I'd hold off. I LOVE my Macs (iMac G5 and iBook G3) and am holding out until Leopard comes loaded before upgrading my laptop.
Having said all that, no matter which Mac you buy, it'll last you for years. |

I still love my iBook G4 so like Anya says they last. I wouldn't worry about waiting for the absolute latest. You'll still prefer it over a PC whatever model you get and they're all fine for the kind of use you're talking about. |

Mac addict...I won't stray from the path of righteousness...
Personally, I would go for the newest best kit if I could afford it...or even if I couldn't...
The older one will more than burn through your needs though.. |

Thank you for all the feedback. I bought the new macbook pro tiger. I LOVE it! It is my fist mac so I'm still trying to get used to a couple of things. I can't get my itunes to play the music I have stored on my ipod. I'm not sure why...I can see all the music but it is grey so I cant click on it. Anyway...I have already uploaded photos and videos and I'm LOVING the computer. SOOOOO much easier than my Dell...I would still be installing software if I bought another Dell. Anyway...thanks again and I'm so happy with my purchase. |

Congratulations
If you ever run into any issues, I've always found the discussion boards on the Apple website very useful, it's got a great search feature to see old posts and people are very helpful with new posts.
Once you're settled in, I really recommend .Mac - there's a free 60 day trial but I'd wait till you get a little bit used to your Mac as the beauty of it is that the features work together with features on your Mac.
Bad news on the ipod issue - it's a security feature to combat people stealing music. Please be careful before putting any music on your Mac and syncing with your Ipod as I *think* (don't hold me to it) that the Mac overwrites the Ipod. There is software on the net that lets you get around this (i.e lets you put your music from Ipod onto your machine before you do anything else) but maybe wait till you're used to the Mac before you try this out. |

Bummer! Thanks for letting me know...I was beginning to get frustrated.
I bought the 1 year subscription to .mac...its pretty cool. And very helpful.
I'll give the message boards a try. I've learned so much from the .mac website already. |

ummmmmmmmmmm. i'll double check for you, but i'm pretty sure it's a windows/macintosh compatability issue (i know it happens the other way around).... hopefully you still have your old computer as i think you're going to have to burn your old itunes library onto a cd, reformat your ipod for the mac, and then reinstall your music onto it. i know it sounds like a pain in the a$$ nd it is. but trust me, you'll be thrilled with how much easier itunes and syncing with the ipod is on the mac.... |

The MacNN forums are also really helpful. I get confused by the Apple forums sometimes (it seems badly organized and atrociously slow at times), so i mostly use the MacNN and and sometimes the MacRumors forum. |

You're right there! I'm about to go into my third year. It's so useful if you move around a lot like I do. And the integrated iphoto & web feature is fabulously smooth and easy. |

Wow. I just got my first MAC 2 days ago and can't leave it alone!!! My old puter was an IBM dinosaur with WindowsME. The difference is nite&day.
The ppl at the store are infinitely patient with me setting it up; I am not a techie by any stretch. By all means I recommend MAC - great support!! I got the MACmini with Leopard. It's probably way more than I'll ever need but what FUN! The "tower" is a little 6.5X6.5x2inch box and so quiet I can't believe it. |

Yes I was drooooooling over the iMAC 24" .....but DH made me "settle" for the MACmini. HeeHee. Better than the Dell
he was trying to talk me into.
The thing I like is the fabulous support and built-in tutorials on MAC 101. New to MAC and new to Leopard, I thought I would be overwhelmed, but not so. Just taking baby steps every day!
I wonder how long your other MACs have lived????? Ppl tell me 3-4 years is average for any computer, but my old IBM gave me at least 6 good years b4 imploding. Please share!! |

Another Mac fan here. My husband and kids gave me the ibookG4 for Mother's day one year and here I am, in bed, in love with my mac and never going to go for windows again! It is so easy to drive, does everything I need it to do - shopping, emails, banking, searches etc... so cute and sexy, I just love it. |

Fawnie I have a G3 iBook which is about 5 years old, my PPC iMac (which I still have) is 4 years old and both of them are still going strong. I didn't need another Mac, but I sprung for the new iMac because I just had to have it .
I know people who are still using the old Clamshell laptops that first came on the market 8 years ago
You'll find that your Mini will last your for years!! Have lots of fun with it ![Very Happy](images/smiles/biggrin.gif) |

Welcome to the wonderful world of mac!
Dont you love that we mac users call them macs and NOT PC's?
Anyway just a quick note...you cant download songs from your ipod TO your itunes...once on the ipod they can not be downloaded back....(was that the problem?)
great you have .mac ..Its the best! you can set up aliases so you never have to use your actual account name when shopping or mailing people you dont know (with the potential of getting spammed)...but then dont you love the bounce function! just hit that and you bounce their mail right back as if you never received it!
ahh mac! ![Very Happy](images/smiles/biggrin.gif) |
