My husband, Lor, has always been driven crazy by very dry skin on his back. He is constantly looking for some surface to rub his back on and asking me to scratch which I don't mind but its so often and after a fresh manicure, I don't think so! I've put every lotion I've ever had in the house on his back. If it doesn't penetrate right into his skin, he claims to feel sticky. Please tell me what to use. Winter is around the corner and, naturally, its worse then. |

Hi Nanapost--my husband has the same problem and I simply hate to get his dead skin flakes all encrusted under my long fingernails (or so I tell him). Eucerin Original Moisturizing Creme (in the tub) really works wonders for chronically dry skin. My son uses it on his hands which have a tendency to get contact dermatitis, and it's the ONLY thing I've found that works. Your hubby will probably complain that it feels tacky or whatever, but it will relieve the itchies. Another product I just recently bought for my hubby is Cutanix Dramatic Relief lotion (www.cutanix.com). I've read really good things about it. You might want to browse their site.

What is it with these husbands and itchy backs. I thought I was the only one who scratched hubby's back at least once a day!
Sometimes when people have itchy skin, it can be an essential fatty acid deficiency, so you might have them take flax oil capsules or fish oil... if they will. It helps Richard... when he takes them.
Now this is risky... because he'd probably want you to do it all the time, but you could massage his back with some kind of oil that would soak in well. Again, I really wouldn't try that one except as a last resort.

Judy, how much does Richard take? I actually think I could get Lor to take them if it really works. Our house isn't very dry, we've got a humidifier, but I think his office is quite dry with the heat on in the winter. I'll try anything....lotions, potions, pills. |

We take a combination of fish oil and flax oil capsules. We take them with each meal and take about 6 flax oil and 3 fish oil between the 3 meals. The only problem is if he has trouble swallowing large gelcaps or if he just has resistance to it. Both fish oil and flax oil are large. I have no problem and now that Richard is used to it, he has no problem with them, especially after he's read so much info about how EFA's also help keep your heart healthy.
You may or may not remember that I said that Richard also drinks 2 tablespoons of milled flax seed in 8 oz. of organic unfiltered apple juice a couple times a day. That was started to help with cholesterol, but since he's been using it, he hasn't used Metamucil at all, which I'm glad about because I know the flax oil is so much healthier for him.
He still backs up to me right at bedtime and asks for a back scratch, but I think that's just habit and cause he likes it. He used to ask me to scratch his back 2 or 3 times every day.
