Hi ladies,
I was just browsing a new "green" store, aptly named Vert (http://www.vertlosangeles.com/) and found a brand line called Pratima. I'm an especially big fan of all natural sun blocks (non-chemical sunscreen), and the Pratima Neem Rose Face Sunscreen 30 SPF looks interesting: http://www.vertlosangeles.com/index.php?page=products&cid=42&product_id=219
Ingredients: Ionized Water, Micronized Zinc Oxide 18.6%, Extract of Neem, Brahmi, Shatavari, Licorice, Vitamin E, Lecithin, Rose Essential Oil, Xanthan Gum.
Anyone tried this or other products from Pratima? (www.pratimaskincare.com) They have anti-aging, acne and discoloration products too. Thanks! |

I had seriously looked at it last year but decided against it in the end as shipping to Canada (at the time) was *ridiculously* high. If you are interested in an Ayurvedic consultation with Dr. Raichur, though, but are not located near her clinic, she will do consultations by phone. |

I had used them in the past and liked them.
I had also seen her in person and can tell you that she is absolutely gorgeous with wrinkle free skin ( she was at the time in her early sixties, I believe).
I would love to find kajal ( it is an Indian natural herbal paste that is used to line the eyes - beautiful and medicinal at the same time), but they no longer carry it.
I am not sure about anti-aging benefits, but that was not what I was looking for at that time.

Thanks ladies! I might look into this the next time purchasing comes around... The price point seems pretty fair (especially purchasing right from the website), and I'm a sucker for new "toys." |

The sunscreen and vit c oil look ok. I wish they were more specific as to what's the vit c being used and how much of it. |

I have been looking at this line for sometime I've recently discovered teh joy of ayurveda and have been inspired to incorporate it into my life on many aspects. I'm currently reading "Perfect Health" by Deepak Chopra and I now have a desire to truly address my imbalances. I'm still working on using up a few items I have, but I plan on ordering the Pitta cleanser, Pitta essential oil, basic moisturizing cream, and neem acne cream.
I've heard great things about Dr. Pratima and her spa in NYC.
I'm excited to try ayurvedic skincare as well! |

You cannot order through the pratimaskincare.com website at all. From what I understand, all orders have to go through email or by calling their spa directly. I plan on ordering from vertlosangeles.com first to see how that goes. My main concern is the freshness of the products. There are no preservatives or fillers, thus the shelf life is less than typical store brands that have those ingredients. If the product I order has been sitting at Vert for months and months, well...I would be tempted to go directly to the source, regardless of the hassle. Now, with that, I might have just talked myself into ordering directly from the spa...haha
It's actually a horrible idea to send any personal information, credit card number, etc. through email. I was not pleased when I saw that option. As a graduate student who taught at a state university, we were prohibited from even sending test scores or grades via email because of the lack of security with such correspondence.
It looks like international orders are the same from Vert as they are with Pratima Spa.
From Vert's policy page:
"International shipments outside of North America can be shipped by US postal service.
For estimated shipping charges and to place an order, please call or email our store. shipping@vertlosangeles.com or (310) 822 8435"
ETA: When I visit my brother in NYC, I plan on saving up to get some sort of spa service from Pratima. I hear Dr. Pratima Raichur is amazing!!! |

Does anyone know how this differs from the Bindi skincare line, also by Dr. Raichur (www.bindi.com)?
I've used Bindi products before and they are very nice. The Pratima line looks similar but more expensive. Anyone know? I didn't see any mention of this other skincare line on the Bindi website. |

I agree. It's not secure to purchase in this way. Not worth the risk. |

COMPLETELY agree!!!
BBD...check out the bottom of the FAQs
http://www.pratimaskincare.com/pratima_faq.html
For some reason I could not cut and paste it.
All of the Pratima line is made by Pratima. Pratima no longer makes all products in the Bindi line. |

I was wondering too especially when I saw pictures of the store with all those windows and everything sitting on the shelves...
I'm reading her book right now, Absolute Beauty, Radiant Skin & Inner Harmony and am finding it quite interesting. Lots of good tips in there... |

Has anyone gotten a facial at Pratima in New York? Also, any specific reviews on the cleansers, essential oils, moisturizers/creams? Especially for people who suffer from hormonal breakouts . . . |

I did have several facials there years ago with Pratima herself. She was fantastic.
I believe she no longer does facials herself, but she has beauticians who do. Just having a consultation with her would be very beneficial IMHO. |

i had a facial/consultation with pratima and she was great. she gave me some basic, but very helpful ayurvedic supplements.
her products are very good too. if i remember correctly, she was involved with bindi and tj at some point years ago.
actually, i found her because a natural spa in upstate ny used her products and i just loved her herbal face cleanser. it came in a bottle, but inside was all powder, which you could mix with a bit of water for a wash or use as a very gentle scrub. really amazing stuff for a very sensitive skin.
pratima is big on neem oil - of course, this is one of the most amazing oils and loved by many ayurvedic doctors. |

Sark, do you find the products quite fragrant? Also, I was surprised that there are no expiry dates (or use after XX months of opening) on the products especially considering they are preservative free but then I thought that the ingredients might be self-preserving in nature? |

They are definitely fragrant - due to all of the natural herbs/essential oils, I assume. While there are no expiry dates, I was told at Pratima that products have a shelf life of 4-8 months (I think), with the powdered products being on the longer end. I would just call Pratima directly and ask . . . |

A strong word of caution to you all if you are considering buying any product with no preservative system. ParisTroika brings up a very good point here. First, you must separate the concept of "preservative" and "shelf-life". The "shelf-life" of a cosmetic products is more strongly driven by the raw materials, especially the oils, and whether or not they are inherently stable or unstable. This more than anything else will determine how many months a product will last before losing activity and even becoming rather smelly (rancid).
The "preservative" is put in to keep molds, fungus, and microbial contamination of most types from growing in the product after manufacture and during use. A cosmetic product that has no preservative system can become very dangerous! Microbial growth can originate from the manufacturing process, from workers who are not careful, from product containers that were not clean to begin with, and even your fingers when you touch the product. Imagine spreading something on your skin or face that is literally teaming with microbial growth!! It can, and does happen.
That is why there is no such thing as a "natural preservative free cosmetic". Yes, you can make a preservative free cosmetic, but the "safety" of that product will be extremely iffy! There is no "self preserving" raw materials either. Molds, fungus, and microbial growth can literally overwhelm any raw materials when moisture, air, and warmth are present.
The question that you should ask this person is what laboratory regimen of "microbial trial" testing did she put her products through and how well did they stand up, if at all. This is not a shelf life question, it is a health and safety question.
Hope this tidbit of information helps!

Hi everyone!
I wanted to bump up this thread and say that I ordered several Pratima products. I wanted to wait and do a proper review when I was more than half way finished with my products so I will do a mini review for now. Here is what I got. BTW I ordered from Vert.com, free shipping on $75 or more. This is a 2 week review.
Neem Rose Face Sunscreen 30 SPF - Love everything about it. The scent is a light, refreshing rose that fades quickly but smells lovely. The texture is fantastic, light, easily spreadable, and is moisturizing without being greasy. I would actually say it is fairly matte. I have not used any SS or SB in over a year because I was sick of being shiny or covered in zits. This has caused neither. I want to see how it performs in the Texas summer/humidity but this is shaping up to be my HG. *Ionized Water, Micronized Zinc Oxide 18.6%, Extract of Neem, Brahmi, Shatavari, Licorice, Vitamin E, Lecithin, Rose Essential Oil, Xanthan Gum.
Acne Essential Oil - I really like this too, the camphor(I'm usually not a fan of any menthol types in my skincare) in it is actually very soothing and refreshing, not over powering like some natural acne treatments. Time will only tell how this prevents breakouts but I can say I'm clear as of now with nothing lurking under the surface! *Pure Neem Oil, Brahmi, basil, Camphor, Essential Oils of Sandalwood and Rose.
Rejuvenating Pearl Cream - I purchased this more as an eye and lip cream(as it is for very dry skin), which I love it as. Very emollient and moisturizing with out being oily and heavy. I cant put my finger on the scent but its light/beautiful and reminds me of my Mom when I was little. Have also used it mixed 50/50 with the Cucumber Aqua Gel as an all over moisturizer for night. No breakouts. *Pure Pearl Powder, Rose Water, Jasat Bhasma, Organic Ghee, Wheat Germ Oil.
Soothing Lotion - Genius product! Think of calamine lotion. Calms ANY irritation almost immediately. I love using this as an all over face primer before MMU. The light pink color really makes my skin-tone uniform and I can use less MMU. I am very pale though. Not sure how this would work for day time use on darker skin-tones. I love it! *Ionized Water, Calamine, Zinc Oxide, Allantoin, Camphor, Witch Hazel, Herbal Extracts of Neem, Chamomile, Comfrey, Sandalwood, Karinj.
Cucumber Aqua Gel - A light, refreshing moisturizer for oily skin, I can see myself loving this for summer. *Kumari (Aloe Vera Juice), Cucumber Juice, Brahmi, Wheat Germ Oil (Natural Vitamin E), Organic Rose Water.
Liposomes Vitamin C Serum - This is another one that only time will tell if it works. So far its nice to use and has a beautiful rose scent. *Soya Bean and Fennel Extract, Natural Vitamins C and E, Organic Essential Oils of Jasmine, Rose.
All in all I am very pleased with my products and I think they are well worth the money. The packaging is beautiful and well deserving of a spot on your vanity. I plan on getting a few more products its just a matter of choosing! |

Great summary, V. I'd like to try the Cucumber Gel so I'm glad you mentioned it. I like the sunscreen, pearl cream and liposome serum too, also the age delay and gold eye cream. There's been nothing from Pratima that I haven't liked so far. |
