Hi. I am new here. Here's my regime for night time which is when I would be doing the retin-a, in lowest dose.
-cream cleanser
-homeade vinegar toner
-goji berry ha serum (sometimes)
-moisture mist
-moisturizer (sometimes I add a few drops of oil and pearl powder)
-eye/neck moisture

Until my skin adjusts I want to ease into the retinol. Initially, would it be best to do it after moisturizer/oil as a way to buffer it? or should I just apply it directly to skin after the toner and layer the other stuff on top? I know that will be diluting it too, but that is fine as I want to ensure I go very very gently with the retinol. any ideas? thanks!

As far as I know (and that's the way I doing it), moisturiser must be on top of the RA not before. Retin A have to applied on very clean and dry skin.

About retinol adjustment, better than diluting it I think is following...I used not retinol but retinaldehyde cream (Avene Eluage) for some time before Retin A and it seems to be OK.
I really don't have much problems with RA - some peeling and neck itching but I found that hemp oil make wonders with that.

okay good to know. So I do apply it after my toner or mist. I will probably mix it with my moisturizer (or apply immediately after moisturizer) for a while until my skin adjusts, so that it is diluted/buffered. I am only using it as a preventative, as I am in my 20s and don't have any wrinkles yet. Perhaps this way would be gentlest for me.

However, I read today for those that want the full concentration of retinols, they do indeed need to be applied to clean skin and to wait 45 mins for the retinol to "work" and then you can do any other moisturizers on top.

I think the buffering/diluting will be fine for me to do, until I am older and have more damage. I just wanted to make sure that the moisturizers underneath or on top would indeed dilute it and that my certain oil/ha/moisturizer wouldn't cause the retinol to be stronger and penetrate more.

Well I guess my question would be do you think it is best for young people looking for prevention to buffer the RA? since I want to just maintain my skin and not really reverse anything yet. It seems logical to me that a mild dose of RA during my 20s would be better.

Well I am not expert for sure, I just started to use RA because I am almost 44 and I need it.

If you are so young, and if you are my daughter Smile, I think that my advice will be take some time, maybe to come to you thirties to use Retin A or stronger retinols. As I understood, your skin is nice and you don't need it for acne. If you start it for preventive, you have to know that retinoids of any kind will make your skin very sensitive to the sun. As sun radiation is big problem, I don't think that is very clever to increase sensitivity in your young age.
Because RA is meant to be treatment for photo aging - maybe is much wiser to protect skin as much as possible from the sun and avoid photo aging as much as you can.

That is my opinion, maybe somebody else will tell you more about this.

Sweetsweettart, I would say Mirjana gave you some really good advice. At your age and with no issues to address the Avene retinaldehyde would be the way to go until your at least in your thirties. That's just my opinion of course. If your not diligent about sun screen use or staying out of the sun you would do more harm than good.

If you do decide to use the Retin-A you could try using the Retin-A three nights of the week on its own and your regular routine on the other nights.

yes I avoid the sun. I work at home most days and never even leave the house until late after noon or night time most days.

I was just thinking that using the .025 RA and then buffering it and using it every other night would be equivalent to something milder like the Avene retinaldehyde, only I can get the RA from adc for much more affordable price.

You could certainly try buffering the RA by using your moisturizer or oil first but keep in mind that even the low strength RA is still way stronger than an over the counter retinol product but if you take a conservative approach like using the RA a couple of nights a week to start you shouldn't have a problem.

I know what you mean about the Retin-A actually being more economical! I live in Canada and with my health care coverage I only pay about $9.00 for a tube, so the best anti-aging product I use is also the cheapest!

I think your products are negating one another. I don't see any point using retin A if you want to buffer it with a moisturizing product such as HA. Makes better sense if you use a chemical exfoliant twice a week as a treatment and continue with one moisturizer. You will still get nice smooth skin without the drying and peeling effects. I would skip the vinegar toner too. Smile

Retin-A is basically the gold standard for skin care, so I'm not sure why ditching it in favour of a chemical exfoliant would be more beneficial. Also, you will still get the benefit of Retin-A even if you buffer it with a moisturiser over the top - that's what most users do.

As far as Apple Cider Vinegar is concerned - it has numerous benefits for the skin, just do a Google search and you'll find a mine of information on it. It contains salicylic acid so is great for keeping the pores clean. It's an extremely cheap and effective toner.

Your points are well taken. I extol the virtues of apple cider vinegar. I, myself have a big bottle of it in my cupboard. If you're using retin A why use ACV as well? Retin A or salicylic acid are both exfoliants, so theres no point in using both. I should have said, use the retin A maybe a couple times per week, and use a regular moisturizer on the alternate days.

There is allot of advice floating around which advocates the use of an AHA or BHA with Retin-A. I guess it all depends on how your skin reacts. Retin-A does make the skin peel initially, but the skin will adjust after a while and the peeling should stop. I've been using it for over two years now and can't remember the last time I suffered from any peeling.

Obviously, if you have sensitive skin that is inclined to become dry and irritated, caution should be used when using any retinoids or AHAs.

ok thank I am still reading...and listening

i have personally had good luck with the acv toner and have had no drying effects yet. I may not have to use it as I am getting a new ph balanced cleanser soon.

And I was only planning on using the RA at the lowest strength (.025%) every other day and buffering it too, so I would probably only be getting a teeny tiny amount. And maybe as I get older and into my 30s (in 10yrs) I could gradually adjust to not buffering and then to every day use or a higher percent.

You are doing the right thing by starting off on a low percentage Retin-A. Just listen to your skin, it will soon tell you if you're upsetting it! I've always applied an oil after Retin-A - but only because I don't want to miss out on all the anti-oxidants they contain.
