Question about tipping at for redo at hair salon?

Hi, my colorist screwed up my highlights last week (I asked for "subtle" and it was too subtle Laughing ), and long story short, I'm going back in to have it redone. My question is, what is an appropriate amount to tip? I already tipped him and his assistant 20% each last time, but since I think he's redoing my color for free, should I tip 20% again? A little unsure of proper rules... TIA!

I just had a redo, my highlights were too heavy. She even screwed that up, added a lowlight in a color I specifically told her I did not want. I did not tip again as it cost me another 3 hours of my time, plus driving, stress, and it still isn't quite right. She decided to change up the formula and do it heavier without asking, so therefore her mistake. I may be wrong but if I was happier, I might have considered it.
If you can do it right the other times, don't change it up without asking.

I would tip him again. Only because he did give you what you asked for. If he had screwed up the color or given you huge chunky highlights I would not be so inclined to tip him twice(mainly because he didnt listen to what you asked for), however, he is fixing it to your liking for free (and he isn't getting base pay for his time), if you go back after this, just like a server in a restaurant, he will remember if you tipped him again or not. Having said that, I would also judge by his attitude, if he is nice about it then by all means tip him, if he is not so nice about it I would not only not tip him but I would also consider finding a new colorist. I cant stand it when hair industry people seem to forget that their career choice is customer service oriented and get snotty attitudes. HTH's!

I think that's really good advice. Unless he owns the salon, he won't get any income for the time he spends on the redo. Although he is fixing his mistake, if he's doing it willingly and with a good attitude, then I think some financial reward would go a long way to establishing a good relationship between him and your hair.

Thanks ladies! Would it be OK to tip 10% this time instead of 20%, or would that look cheap?

I'm just adding up the amounts, and my coloring session might end up costing double what I had budgeted! Shock

I had already tipped 25 percent to the colorist and 20 percent to the one who cut my hair the first time and it still wasn't right. I feel like since she decided to change the color and density w/o asking, and they charged me an extra 70.00 for a bang trim, I had already paid too much.
I asked why they charged so much and they said instead of getting a full haircut, you could come back and get several free trim ups. Like I had that kind of time!
Needless to say, I won't go back.

I asked my husband, who used to own a hair salon, what he thought and he figures if you get a good redo done with a good attitude, then that is worth 20%. He thinks errors in hair colour/cut are often the result of miscommunication and also that attitude/quality of customer service plays a huge part in how much a provider gets tipped. Me, knowing how much $ we spend on all the 'services' we need, would tend towards 10%, but I might pay more to avoid an awkward moment in the salon. The choice might come down to what you can realistically afford, after all--colour needs touching up in about 6-8 weeks!

Can I ask you one more thing? The guy who cuts my hair actually owns the salon. I've read in magazines that it is not necessary to tip the owner. Is that right? And what is an appropriate amount for the people that shampoo, blow dry your hair? I'm sorry for being so full of questions, it's just that there are no "rules" on these things which makes life so complicated! TIA!!

I'm sure you handled the situation just fine and I hope the redo is what you were hoping for!
It's true--my sources tell me it is not a requirement to tip the owner of the salon if he/she is also your stylist. However, I think it would be more agreeable to just tip less than to skip it all together and hubby agrees.
