tea makes me nauseous

I recently gave up coffee and diet coke for health reasons. I have turned to tea (green, fruity, etc) but I noticed that after a cup of tea, I don't feel well. I am nauseous and have a small headache.

I tried eating on both a full and empty stomach but neither helps. I tired decaf and regular tea...still nothing.

Is it the acid in the tea? Does this happen to others? if so, is there something I can do to feel better?

Caffeine withdrawals are known to cause headaches. As for the tea- perhaps a new brand or switching to a tea you enjoy tasting may work. I have that nauseous experience with drinking wheat grass juice. I just don't like green drinks with any hint of sweetness.

Shelly, it might actually be the quality of tea you are drinking--- what brand have you tried? I tried a lot of tea (4-5 cups a day), but the low quality ones sometimes make me feel a little nauseous too because they are so strong, sometimes overflavored, etc. My advice is to try some really mild teas and see how they sit with you. Do you live near a teavana by any chance? If you do, you can go and have them brew you a cup of their kukimatcha green tea (tell them to brew it on the weaker side for good measure) and see how that sits with you. Kukimatcha is a very mild green tea which is very soothing and good for macrobiotic diets. You can also try Rooibos (red) tes which is also very soothing and mild. I think the mild flavor of Rooibos pairs well with vanilla flavors, and Teavana also sells a nice Vanilla Rooibos you might consider trying. If you don't live anywhere near a Teavana, Celestial Seasonings makes a nice Vanilla Rooibos, and they also make a lovely African Peach Honeybush which is likewise very mild and refreshing, so you might look into trying those. Liz – to answer your questions….well, this is sad but not really sure of the brand. I borrowed some tea from my mom and the rest I am drinking here at work (I believe it is Flavia).

I am near a teavana so I am going to make a little list and try your suggestions!! I can walk to one from my office so that should give me a few days to try some different types and flavors.

And I agree…I am having caffeine withdrawals! Today is day 3 and I am dying for a coke or big latte which actually scares me and tells me I must be doing something right!

i also get nauseous if i drink tea but only green tea, if i drink black tea im ok, i feel much more nauseous on an empty stomach

i googled it and its quite common to feel nauseous after drinking green tea, maybe if the black tea you drink is strong this is why it would havee the same effect

Why? I love tea so much! This is a very elegent and graceful drinking.
Maybe the tea that you drank was so strong that makes you feel bitter. Just try some light tea, it would make you feel delighted.

You might need to work your way up slowly. I have found a really good, affordable organic green tea at Wal-Mart. It helped me kick my coffee habit-- but now I have a tea habit, which is better.

I agree, I went back to 2 cups of coffee in the am and now drinking a little tea after lunch. Each week I try to decrease my coffee/coke intake and increase my green tea intake.

Seems to be going well so far!

I had a friend who used to maintain that tea made her sick but now she's hooked on green tea. She says that it neutralizes her bad eating habits, twinkies, oreos, extra mayo and white bread. hahaha.

About a year ago, I stopped drinking coffee because I didn't like that I was depending on it during the day to feel like I could function properly. I also went through a type of "withdrawal" where I experienced headaches. I now only drink green tea, rooibos, and herbal tea, and I feel great! I no longer feel sluggish in the morning. I never had stomach aches like some of the other posters mentioned, but perhaps it could be the quality of the tea? I only ever drink organic. Tea leaves that are not organic are sprayed with pesticides, and so basically that's what you're drinking in a cup of unconventional tea that would be causing upset stomach.
