Has anyone bought the book called "Cosmetics Unmasked"?
It is basically like a directory/dictionary of ingredients and what the effects (harmful or otherwise) are. |

Hi
I bought it about 3 years ago. Actually, it's not as interesting as it promises to be.
It seems a long time ago and I don't have it here, but I seem to remember I didn't learn much from it. A few things about the bases of products and how the ingredients are listed, but not much.
It also seemed out of date even then because it didn't mention any of the new active ingredients like copper peptides etc. etc. If I remember rightly.
Not worth the money.

Thanks Molly! Living in Japan it is not easy to whip down to a bookstore and check out a title before buying. I wonder if they will do an updated version (reckon it would be hard to update with so much progress going on in skincare every month almost!) |

Hi Tiger-Tim
Actually, I didn't explain my view about the book very well.
I reckon if you believe in over the counter products then it's a good buy because it will teach you what a nonsense most of that stuff is. But if you're aware that moisturisers are are only cosmetic moisturisers and that their 'active ingredients' are usually so minimal that they're not active at all and the way the products are formulated it's unlikely anything will penetrate the skin then it's a waste of time for you. If you're using online skincare forums then I'm pretty sure you're in the second camp - looking for serious stuff.
I'm living in small town China so I know what you mean. It certainly helps to cut down on impulse purchases.

A small town in China? Which area? (I guess it is not "too" small if it has Internet! )
As for me.. ugh.. definately NOT a small town - TOKYO |

North-eastern Sichuan and actually not so small 100,000 people, but for China that is small. It feels small, they all know each other.
More remote than small I suppose. I'm the only foreigner living here so thank God for their lovely, fast internet connection.
It's interesting.
