I'm off to Shanghai on Saturday (thus I will be AWOL from EDS forum until the 16th) and I'm wondering if anyone has any shopping tips or suggestions?
I more or less know what I should see there in terms of the cultural stuff and I don't really have all that much time (it's mainly a work trip), but I would like to know a bit more about any special things that I should try that I can't try elsewhere. As you can see I don't even know what those "things" might be - perhaps skincare that's only sold in China, any special food etc
At the moment the only thing I have on my shopping list are those paper masks that are often used with the SKII facial essence |

Hey Mabsy
Be sure to head on to "Xiang Yang Shi Chang" - it is a market place where there are easily a few hundred stores selling clothes, bags, accessories, etc.
I once got a pair of knee high black suede boots with embroidery at the sides for US$15!! Sequin and intricate purses and handbags go for about the same prices. You get also get all kinds of jeans for about US$12.
Of course you can also get replica watches and handbags as well - the latest - the workmanship is not bad.
Words of caution:
1) Be prepared to be hounded by touts selling fake branded goods at the entrance - but once you get past the gates, they leave you alone.
2) Be prepared to bargain - at least 50% from the initial offer.
Do check with your hotel concierge - I think if you show them the spelling I wrote above, they should be able to write the chinese characters for you and you can show them to the cab driver.
Ooh, the shoes are great too!
As for skincare, if you can get hold of the Kose Sekkisei Lotion and its latest Sekkisho (Black) mask - it should be worth your while. With your fair complexion, you will not be likely be interested in whitening but the former does wonders for non-oily hydration whilst the latter is a black peel off mask that rids dead skin, blemish marks.
And, if you are into anti-oxidant green tea - try the Chinese Green Tea - very fragrant. There are many types but "dragon well" in chinese would be good.
Enjoy!

Thank you, and a huge big thank you to you Jenny for those tips
The market you mentioned sounds like my type of shopping place I've googled and found out that it's just off Huiahai Rd (I was planning to check it out as well) so I'll be sure to go find it. I'm also going to be on the lookout for a Watson's or SaSa like shop so I can drool over skincare that I've never seen in my life. I won't be able to understand the writting on it but it doesn't matter (I'm sure the SAs will be rather amused if I spend half an hour inspecting their hemmoroid cream section)! I'm going to track down those cotton toner/makeup remover pads that Moshimoshi mentioned as well.
Thanks again! |

Mabsy you will definitely be missed, but I hope you have a wonderful time. I wouldn't know what to buy there so my only shopping tip to you (which has worked well for me in the past no matter where I'm shopping) is...take loads of money! |

Mabsy - I agree with Jenny on prepairing to bargain... They are very keen about 'outsiders/foreigners'... even when you look asian, they would be able to tell by the way you dress, talk, etc... on that note, they most of the time will double or even triple the prices of their merchandises on customers that appear "foreigned" ... So what mom did was bargain at 1/3 of the initial price from the start and slowly add up to about half of the price and then walk away... most of the time they would come chasing you to seal the deal, then u should test the water by lowering the offer a bit and see... It works on most stores but I suspect maybe not in the major department stores... so, BARGAIN YOUR WAY THROUGH!!!! oh, by the way, when you go to those street markets, don't dress up too much or else the tactic wouldn't work well...
Shanghai is very pretty esp at night... lots of young fashionable people... living standard is comparable or may even surpass Tokyo and NYC... mom's advise is always go out with a group of people if not at least bring one more companion and don't stray too far from the city or major streets...
and FOODs well, i luv to eat, so if you like to try out different cuisines, tis a great city to do a bit of food venture Shanghai cuisine is one of the reknown chinese cuisines, if any doubt, you should ask the hotel conceirge to recommend any good authentic one... my parents went to one that's in one of those imperial palaces with the traditional 12-20??!! course (small portions though) that was served in the old day to the emperor... everyone works there dressed the particular wardrobe from that dynasty... the musical performance the like... it was like living through the time... good food and an eye-opening experience though!!
If you guys have anyone in the group who's been to the city or even have a young local travel agent to show you around, that'll be a plus...
travel safe and HAVE A BLAST!!!! |

Food is going to be interesting for me as when I was in Taiwan I could barely eat a thing. I'm *very* picky and need to know exactly what is in everything
Thanks again everyone.
