My local clinic has just started Platelet-rich plasma rejuvenation (PRP) - the blurb says "Imagine regenerating your skin with your own body's chemistry and cells - no drugs, no artificial products." "Case studies show consistent results with skin texture and tone improving within three weeks. The process is usually repeated within 4-6 weeks, and then repeated once a year for maintenance. Your skin will positively glow! PRP is useful for areas where ageing has caused sagging and thinning of the skin, puffiness, age spots and wrinkling, especially in areas where sun-exposure is worse".
Apparently, blood is taken from the arm, mixed with the PRP and then injected into the face. The cost is AUD$1,200 per area (the whole face is considered one area).
Actually, a document on skin needling I have mentions this procedure, which was performed on patients at the same time as the skin needling.
Do any of you have any experience of this procedure or know anything about it? |

I've copied this from the PDF document I have:
Title: Micro Needling and Injecting Platelet Rich Plasma to Enhance Collagen Synthesis and Skin Tightening.
Author: Joseph F. Greco, PhD, PA/C
Method
First, 50cc blood is drawn from the patient, centrifuged for 10 mins until the platelets, which carry the growth factors, are separated from the remaining blood. See Fig 5 and Fig 6 below (Blood Recovery Systems, Inc.)
Fig 5 Fig 6
Second, the patient undergoes microderabrasion to remove the stratum corneum in the treatment area, while the platelets are being separated, to prepare the skin surface for the PRP.
Third, the treatment area undergoes nappage, via medical micro needle therapy (Fig 7) below to produce microscopic channels thru the epidermis in order (1) to increase the penetration of the PRP into the dermis and (2) to initiate the immune response in the dermal layer.
Fig 7
Fourth, the activated PRP or toning formula is then applied to the face and nappage is continued with the roller for the CET treatment only.
NOTE: The maximum effect of a Mesolift of the neck and face can be achieved at this point by injecting PRP and a skin toning formula. A Mesolift, or non-surgical skin tightening, utilizes micro injections of a variety of skin toning formulas and or a lipolytic formula to achieve a desired result. It is the synergistic effect of the toning formulas and the bodies “wound response”, caused by the needle that produces the desired effect. After the injections, a 0.5mm MTS roller is used on the treated areas to induce collagen synthesis. |

I've never heard of this Keliu but I must admit it sounds very interesting.
Where abouts in Oz are you Keliu? We often get things in this country way before the US. |

Before the US? I always thought we were way behind! Anyway, I'm on the Gold Coast - the clinic is Australian Skin Clinics on Ashmore Road - for more information go towww.ozskin.com/prp.ews
Since reading the article that I posted above, I've actually been trying to replicate the process. Every two weeks I roll using a .05 Dermaroller then apply an Elandra collagen mask.

I think the whole technique sounds very interesting - I hope someone who's had it done responds |

It says on the website that Light Therapies can enhance the results. Now I'm desperate to get it done and slap the Lightstim on! |

Oddly, it doesn't sound too far-fetched!
An orthopedic surgeon at Vanderbilt University, a very well-respected medical school in the US, is injecting platelets harvested from a patient into the same patient's knees after sports injury to regenerate them. I don't know the specifics, but will look into it. A volleyball champ I know had this done and swears it worked for her. Sounds like the same principle doesn't it?
I'm a little leery of the microdermabrasion the remove the stratum corneum though....depends on how deep this is!
You go first and report back! |

Yes we definately do get some things before the US, but also many things after.
Anyway I'm in Perth so I'll keep my eyes open for this one. |

I've been having a look on the net and there's quite a bit of info about this process being used for injuries. As an anti-aging technique it's been used for some time in Asia and the UK.
I think the science behind this sounds really interesting and, yes, I'd love to be the guinea-pig - as you well know, I'm ageing and frustrated but I'm also poor, so it will have to stay on my wish list for the moment! |

Maybe we have got this one before the US - nobody has responded who's had it done. It's been available for some time in Asia and the UK though.
Do a search on the net, I found another clinic in Noosa that's doing it - surely there must be one in Perth. |

Hi all, I am new to this PRP information as well. I'm a Naturopathic physician in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The clinic that I practice at has just purchased one of these centrifuges that produces PRP for use with prolotherapy patients (for ligament and tendon injuries). I am REALLY interested in using it for facial rejuvenation and know of a doctor in Miami who is using this in his practice. Has anyone done this yet, or know what the procedure involved is? Do you have to use one of those rollers or can you just inject PRP?
Hmmmm....many questions to be answered.
Cheers,
Katie |

All I know about the procedure is that blood is taken from the patients arm and placed in the centrifuge device and mixed with PRP. The blood is then injected all over the face with a syringe - a roller is not involved. |

Have you heard anything about bruising? How long it lasts and how bad it is? |

Keliu my Dr who injected my leg veins a couple of days ago has heard of this, but doesn't know of anyone using it in Perth as yet. She's the type who likes to wait and see others using new things for a while and see how they work out.
I like that idea myself too. So patiently waiting for now. |

Guess it's back to my "Ageing, Poor and Frustrated" thread! Let us know if you hear any feedback from someone who's had it done. |

I've actually booked in for a consultation at Australian Skin Clinic at Ashmore next Thursday. So I'll let you know what they say - I'd like to get it done around my mouth. They quoted $1,200 per area but the process needs to be repeated within 4-6 weeks. |

I didn't end up keeping the appointment because I ran into a friend of mine who is a nurse at another clinic on the coast. She said that she and another nurse had had the PRP injections six weeks ago and that she felt that her skin had improved slightly. However, she wasn't sure whether the improvement was due to the PRP or the fact that she had taken up her exercise programme again. She also said that the other nurse who had had her neck injected saw no improvement whatsoever. She said that the clinic where she works is waiting to see the end results before they fork out for a centrifuge machine.
There's also an article on PRP in this month's Australian Vogue magazine. It says, "Theoretically, there is good science behind it but the documented effects of platelet-rich plasma are very subtle - and most patients want visible effects". I know that if I'm going to pay thousands of dollars for this treatment - I definitely want visible results! |

Did your friend see any results after 3 months? |

By Robert M. Freund, MD - New York Plastic Surgeon states:
Platelet Rich Plasma is the next big thing in facial rejuvenation. Studies have shown that injecting apatients platelets in a concentrated form (must be concentrated - not in a firbin matrix) under the skin will increase collagen and hyaluronic acid production 3 fold and will bring new blood supply to an area. Lipose is coming out with a PRP device in the next several months.

I actually had this treatment in my elbow. I was suffering from chronic tennis elbow, and they took the blood from my arm and then it was injected back into my elbow. Pretty painful, sore for a few weeks. It didn't appear to be an immediate result. That was about 16 months ago, my tennis elbow has improved alot, but I really have no idea if this treatment had anything to do with it, or if it was just time and rest.
Don't know about having it done to my face!!
Is this what Kylie Minogue has done? |

Kylie Minogue would have had EVERYTHING done! I read somewhere that she's had stem cell injections in the face.
As for the PRP - I haven't heard of any rave reviews. I did watch an interview with a doctor about it on TV and he wasn't very optomistic about the results at all, so he wasn't a fan. |

So....I am assuming your friends didn't see improvement. I wonder if the clinic picked up the machine? If they did, I guess they have seen improvement. |

I've only just got back home after being away for a year, so I haven't caught up with her yet. I will be interested to see if they went with the technology - I'll let you know when I find out. |

It seems that it is approved in the US after all.
