Volunteers?

I am a firm believer in the saying, "You reap what you sow." Therefore, bring good karma upon myself by volunteering my time with three organizations. Some people think that I am crazy (or have no life!), but know that the latter two only happen once per year. I am actually thinking of adding a fourth organization to the following list: Muscular Distrophy, because FIREMEN are involved with this organization Laughing

Not only would this bring me good karma, but possibly also a good-looking fireman too!

1. Options for Sexual Health (formerly Planned
Parenthood of B.C.) - I am a volunteer counselor at the Vancouver Clinic, and do this 2-4 monthly. My role there involves educating people about sexually-transmitted diseases, birth control options, handling lab requistions, entering lab results in files, filing charts, etc. http://www.optionsforsexualhealth.org/ I absolutely love

my role there, as well as the work that I do! I am now seriously considering going back to school to do nursing.

2. BC Heart & Stroke Association - February is Heart & Stroke Month, and I am assigned a neighborhood route, going door-to-door, canvassing for donations. This is hard work, and can sometimes be discouraging ... especially when I've been walking around, on a wet Vancouver February day, and people aren't wanting to donate!

Wow

That is a lot of volunteering for a young woman!

I volunteer my time to teach people in nursing homes how to Scrapbook their precious memories. My mom was in a nursing home for two years after a severe stroke. My heart really goes out to the residents of nursing homes.

Every year I do my neighborhood drive for the American Cancer and Heart Association.

After reading your post I certainly should be doing more. There is so much reaching out to do.

I used to do volunteer work for the RSPCA. I'd go at weekends to do some cat cuddling and dog walking. I really enjoyed the cat cuddling as I was missing my own cat who had passed away. The dog walking was fun as it meant I was getting some exercise whilst helping others. The only downside to that was having to pick up all the dog dirt.
Not a nice thing to have to do, especially when it's not your own dog!
I haven't been volunteering at the RSPCA since I moved a few months ago. I really should start it up again.

I went to the learn CPR from the vancouver firefighters and they must've been all the ones that were too old or fat to do their real jobs.

I used to do the same but it was so depressing when you find out that some of them got put down during the week Crying or Very sad

Lori,

Was that so bad?? My friend and I met a cute firefighter at a new years party so we wanted to see if there were others just as cute...

We were 21 and a bit immature...I still go mmmm...firemen when I see them drive down the street. My boyfriend gets mad, but I see him checking girls on the side of the road...he always says they look like someone he went to school with. I give him that, and he gives me the ok to look at the firemen!!

What a great topic!! My dog is a certified therapy dog and we have one nursing home and one children's cancer ward that we visit every week. It is really awesom and something that my pup was just born to do.

We also volunteer (yes, my dog does too!) for Habitat for Humanity building houses. We usually work on two or three projects a year...I can even get hubby to come along for these projects. If you are wondering, I started carting with my dog about 1 1/2 years ago and I jokingly told someone at Habitat that he should volunteer to carry stuff around the job site. Well, they took me up on the idea. He can pull about 300lb, so he gets all harnessed and attached to his cart and they fill it up and send him all over the site!

You lot make me feel so guilty...I'd love to do the RSPCA cat cuddling!

The only thing I do really is sponsor 2 children from Vietnam. Brother and Sister, Hau and Hoa, he is 10 now and she is 13. I've been doing this for about 6 years now. I send them over letters and gifts (educational), also clothes, games etc, toothpaste, tooth brushes.

The money I send helps the whole community. since I started to sponsor the family have received a pig and chickens, they have workshops on rice farming and cultivation, children have had all innoculations etc and a new nursery school has been built. They are working on clean running water at the moment. They have also had repairs done to their hut.

They both write back to me and are now learning English which is amazing. Its great to get letters and drawings off them.

I have a friend that is obsessed with firemen and when they were having picket lines she would drive back and forth past them. Her petrol bill trebled for that week.LOL.
I don't think there is any harm in looking.Men are so hypocritical Mr Loopy always looks, especially if girls have forgotten to put on skirts and are only wearing their belts. Then he sulks if I drool over Johnny Depp. Rolling Eyes

After the Jan 1st I am going to make a effort to volunteer my time. I use to do a lot of volunteer work, but not anymore. I developed some health problems 2yrs ago (MS) and that really knocked the wind out of my sail. I have so much to be thankfull for and not doing is doing me no good. I love little kids so I'm going to look for something that helps kids.
