Greetings. Happy to join the forum . I just recently started an exercise routine that incorporates swimming. My hair is perfectly fine since I just started but want to make sure I am doing all I can to protect it. I wonder what suggestions you have for swimmers. I currently use Pureology to protect my color treated hair but wonder if that is enough. Any/All suggestions welcomed.
Thanks! |

I am a long-distance swimmer and I am using a Speedo plastic cap (not the cotton ones) to protect my hair. Never swim without a hair cap (very important). And always use a good shampoo to ensure that there is no more chlorine left on your hair....

Jade,
Thanks. I am purchasing a cap this afternoon. Do you have any recommendations for shampoos? I also heard that putting a conditioner before swimming also helps. |

There are creams/conditioners that you can comb into usually wet hair to help keep the chlorine from attaching. They are usually identified as Sun/Chlorine on the bottle.
I'v used a product from joico. Mostly for Beach use.
I remember telling a hair dresser once that I was thinking of swimming, what should I do for my hair... "pick another sport." LOl!
So, there you go. The cap sounds like a great idea, but I think that water gets in there anyway. I'd use a cream and a cap.
Enjoy your workout!!! |

I prefer the silicone caps to the latex kind. The latex ones really pull/rip at your hair when you're putting them on or taking them off and I don't need any more hair breakage! I've been using silicone caps for years for this reason. Silicone is a few dollars more, but well worth it, plus they last longer.
I've heard some people wear one of those lycra type caps under a silicone cap to make it even easier to get it on and off without breakage, but I've never tried that. |

This is not about hair, but if you are one of those persons (like me) who have problems with regular swim goggles leaving marks/impressions around your eyes that last for hours after you get out of the pool, i highly recommend those Aquasphere Seal Masks.
The design is more like a mask than a goggle, ie sits on the forehead and below the eyes, rather than in the eye sockets. I can swim for 40 mins or so and they barely leave a mark. Also, you don't have to worry about them stretching the skin around the eyes, which I always wondered about with regular goggles, with all that pressure in the eye socket area. Just a thought ...
Oh, and they look way better than regular goggles. The only problem I've had with these is stopping my friends from nicking them. Lost another set to a light-fingered friend last week |

I normally put hair oil prior to putting a hair cap. Massage on my hair before putting the hair cap. this way I will have extra protection + the hair cap before swimming. It always works....

I prefer to use the Speedo goggles and it does not bother me at all with marks on my eyes. I swim for 4 hours none stop (lap swimming)... but my eyes are protected and I can not go without these goggles. I would not even think of swimming for 4 hours without goggles!!!

I was a hairdresser for twenty years, and advised lots of swimmers! First, wet your hair down with tap water (really soak it) before you put the cap on. The more saturated your hair is with regular water, the less it will "absorb" the chlorinated water. Comb a conditioner through it too, with a big wide tooth comb, before you put the cap on. This will also help keep the chlorine from adhering to the hair. And yes, do wash it well afterward, although I never found that anti-chlorine shampoos did any more than regular ones, and tended to be very drying. If all else fails, wear your green hair with pride! |

jade - I am extremely jealous of you, being able to swim for so long with regular goggles without getting the dreaded "goggle marks".
I think it's one of those getting older things, as I don't remember having such problems when I was a youngster.
The Aquaspheres I mentioned are in fact goggles, but the design is like a cross between regular swimming goggles and a mask.

Thanks everyone! Was away for a bit but am back now. I will report back on all of these. I also bought a Purifying Shampoo by Pureology and their treatment for overtly mistreated hair. Will report back on that as well.
I can only wish I can get to the point of swimming 4 hrs straight. I did 30 minutes today and was exhausted. Hope to build up to more |
