HI,
I'm planning to start trying to get pregnant this fall and am wondering what people do for skin care regimes during pregnancy? I have really oily, acne prone skin with cystic acne on my chin....which, much to my dismay, has gotten worse since coming off the pill.
I know there are certain things like salicylic acid and retinoid products that you shouldn't use so I'm wondering what other things you can use during pregnancy to help with acne....I'll need something!
Thanks! |

I get pregnant for 7 months.
I have acne prone skin, too, however, acne seldom occurs since pregnant.
Don't worry about it. |

I want to say some dangerous ingredients, such as Retinol must be stopped in advance. Other products had better be consulted with a doctor. Bring an ingredient list to the doctor and ask him/her if this product could be used...
As for products, Organic skin care would be a good choice for pregnant woman. I recomment a english brand The Organic Pharmacy. This brand offers an excellent Anti-acne line. It's extremely safe and effective. But the price is a little high.
Good luck! |

I would also suggest Organic products, like Weleda and Lavera. My friend is pregnant and she is using baby cream from Lavera instead of her regular products. |

Yes, Weleda and Lavera are also very good brands which I would like to recommend. It's just not easy to buy them from my country. |

A lot of people have had good success when applying honey to problematic areas of the skin.
I applied honey to some of my cysts and it seemed to take down the swelling. The only thing that stinks is it gets kind of messy.
Burt's Bee's has a special line for mom's and babies. You may want to check that one out.
Good luck on getting pregnant! |

Thanks for all the tips everyone! Much appreciated! I know there are a few lines out there for pregnant women but my biggest fear is that my face will completely break out...which it seems to be doing anyway...and I won't be able to put any of my usual products on it.
I think I've seen Weleda around before and I know I can get Burt's Bee's easily as well. I'll also check out Lavera (which I haven't heard of before) and Garden of Wisdom.
I've heard of a brand called Belli that sells products for pregnant women and has some acne products, which I think mostly use lactic acid. Does anyone know anything about that line and how well it works for acne?
SkinCareJunkie, I'll also give the honey a try, since it's probably so messy I'll give it a try at night.
Thanks, hopefully I won't have problems with trying to get pregnant....that will just stress me out and probably make my acne worse!

I was told that Elemis (from UK) is a very safe skin care product for pregnant ladies. |

my skin was pretty good until month 5 of my pregnancy. then all hell broke loose! i used DDF sulfur mask (ok'd by my OBGYN) and mario badescu as a spot treatment (also ok'd by my OBGYN). mario badescu has salicylic acid, but my doctor said it was fine to use since i wasn't taking it orally or slathering it all over my body.
i washed my face with cellcosmet gel cleanser, followed with the activator gel. i used elemis toner, pevonia serum (the propolis one), and pevonia cream (rosacea).
don't forget
1) sunscreen - melasma is common for preggos!
2) stretch mark control - i was using elemis camellia oil. clarins was good at first but then the smell started making me nauseous.

Thanks Panda! Great information! That's exactly what I am worried about, breaking out horribly and not being able to use any of the stuff I was using before, like salicylic acid. But it sounds like you're allowed to use it topically? Did your OBGYN say anything about amounts of salicylic acid that are ok to use? And also, which Mario Badescu spot treatment did you use? I currently have most of that lines acne products and get some results from the drying lotion and drying cream. Was it one of those?
What made you choose the cellcosmet gel cleanser and activator gel? Were you using those before you got pregnant or was that something recommended to you during pregnancy?
Sorry to have so many questions! My face has just been so bad since I went off the pill (especially my chin) and I can't imagine it getting worse during pregnancy and not being able to treat it on top of that!
Thanks for the link, I'm going to go check it out right now. |

skin care junkie, she didn't specifically say what amount is ok to use. i just brought her my drying lotion (the one with the pink gunk on the bottom) and she said i could use it.
i was using cellcosmet before i got pregnant so i just stuck with it.
i totally understand. my skin was terrible after i went off the pill. has your period regulated yet? my derm said part of the reason why my skin was so bad after the pill was because my period was still so irregular. |

oh, this is not skin related and you may probably know this but start taking folic acid before you get pregnant (i.e. start taking before you conceive). it reduces the risk of the baby have spinal cord problems and heart defect. |

A new pregnancy-related skincare line is Sweetsation Therapy. I have tried the Organic Sun Brella Triple Action Moisturizer SPF30+ with Antioxidants and it is excellent. |

Panda, So your doc said Mario badescu's drying lotion was ok to use? I figured it wouldn't be because of the salicylic acid. Good to know.
And yes, good reminder about the folic acid. I always take vitamins and have for years and definitely get enough of that in my multi and B complex. But good reminder!
I'm thinking of trying the Garden of Wisdom products. They have a pregnancy kit but I want to buy some stuff separately and get some of their regular stuff as well. Someone on this thread recommended the garden of wisdom stuff and I looked it up and thought I would give it a try. Has anyone else had success with this line?
Thanks |

I am also pregnant and suffer from acne. I've discovered Institut Esthederm's Intensive Propolis products (cream and serum), which work really well for me. They are not all natural, but they do not contain salicylic acid or retinoids, which is truly what I wanted to avoid.
Good luck! |

The most important thing is to prevent using salicylic acid and vitamin A or their derivatives products.
Someone said some essential oil my lead to muscle contraction so also should be prevented. But there are few research about it. So I prevent to use all aromatic product. |

I am currently 5 months pregnant, and have been lucky in that my skin has not freaked out. I had to stop my Renova when I got pregnant and thought my skin would revolt but it has been pretty clear. I have been using Dr. Hauschka, trying to only use organic products, but there are lots of other good cheaper options out there as everyone else has mentioned.
I still use Vitamin C serum, and occasionally the BHA from IFP.
