I was wondering how all you ladies know which foundation colours to buy??

Which brand works best? Do you prefer Jane Iredale or Bare Essentials? I've also heard of one called youngblood..

Dunno if it matters but I have combo skin, sometimes a little on the dry side, and I break out often.

With respect to your concern about having combination skin and breakouts...I have been using Bare Minerals for two months and my skin has never been better! I used to break out all the time but now I'm only getting one very small zit during TOM. Last one was even hidden in my eyebrow. Laughing I think the pure minerals help problem skin. I hate to think what those goopy foundations were doing to my skin before!

I've used both Bare Minerals and Jane Iredale and love them both. They give a very natural look, with a luminescence, not a flat or matte finish. You'd think that since they are just powder that they wouldn't give as much coverage, but I think they definitely do.

I also highly recommend using Mineral Veil from the BE collection. I use it even over my Jane Iredale as I like the dewey look it gives my skin.

One thing I do differently.... I apply only a liquid concealer to the area beneath my eyes. If I apply the powders there, it shows the small wrinkles more. Then I just bring the BE or JI up to that point.

Judy,

Have you tried the liquid minerals from jane iredale? I've been eyeing them for a while. I'll have to take a shopping trip one day and test the colours out b/c I have no clue..

I've only tried the compressed powder and the loose powder. Since I went onto mineral makeups, I just can't make myself want to go back to any type of liquid. I may go by the shop where I buy mine with no makeup one day just to test it out.

I've tried the liquid minerals and probably like them the most actually. It's also my mum's fave foundation.

I'm not sure if this helps you but I'm vry pale and I use Bisque in the liquid.

I finally firgured out that makeup mania site and the ladies there are all saying warm silk will probably be best, or BE #1.2..

I wish you could get samples of the liquid minerals...I imagine that would be one BIG mess! =)

I'm light but not pale and very golden. .

Mabsy, did it make you break out at all? I saw a few posts about that on the other forum..?

Hi Lianne,
Like you I was interested in Mineral makeup but to be honest found it all overwhelming. I checked out the Mineral Mania forum and it just confused me even more, there are so many opinions and everyone has their own mineral they like.

To make a long story short I went to the JI website and did a search to find a retailer in my area and booked a consult. My area ended up being a six hour drive but I wanted to try them that badly.

The girl did my makeup and I totally loved both the coverage and feel of minerals. I have problem skin and have been using the makeup for a week without any reactions. My skin tends to be oily and this makeup stays put and hasn't caused me any breakouts.

I am using the JI pressed base in natural which is supposed to be one of the colors many different skin tones can wear. It seems to be a great match for me and I also have a sample of suntan. If you check out her website by doing a search for JI it should send you in the right direction.

If I can be of any more help pm me or ask here. Minerals are new to me too and so far have been a learning experience.

Good luck

Sherri,

I'm glad to hear you've been happy with the minerals.. I checked out who in my area has the make-up..and there's a few close-by.

Did you have to pay for them to help you find a color? I don't really want to pay for a make-up lesson. Guess I now what to ask for at christmas.

Hi Lianne,

The consult was free as I expect it would be for you as well. Keep in mind they want to sell you the product so most will gladly do a free makeover for you. Give them a call and see what they say. Let me know how you make out with it, I really love the way the minerals look,

They are expensive to get into since you need a good brush too but will last forever compared to other makeups.

good luck

I just wanted to add something to Sherri's comments. I have found the mineral makeups, both JI and BE, to stay on, looking good, all day long. Staying power seems much better than other types of makeup I've tried.

I have read they have good staying power, that's why I'm so interested. Seems like MAC just slips off my face in an hour or two. My big worry was the pimples. I've said it a zillion times, almost everything makes my skin ANGRY!

Sherri,

I figured you paid for the consult since you pre-booked it. I'll just drop in someplace when I have time.

For the liquid minerals do you use a foundation brush to apply? I have a prescriptives foundation brush that I really like.

is the pressed base easy to apply?? Do you use a brush or sponge?

That's a BIG concern of mine. I'm scared to overdo it and look cakey.

Hi Lianne,

You need a good soft brush to apply any of the powdered minerals. I find it has been expensive to get into for that reason , but it is a long term investment. Once you have a good brush it is my understanding it will last for years.

I have also read they use a flocked sponge to apply them but have no earthly clue what one is lol.

Good luck

FYI - For those without access to a place to try the different shades, or for those like me who don't trust anyone else to match their foundation, get samples! Skin-Etc (www.skin-etc.com) has base samples (and the PureMatte finish powder) for $3 with a flat shipping rate of $5.

Every brand works for someone, but you may have to try some to see what YOU like.

I have tried most and JI was a bit too drying. I like BE and I just my own line up that is similiar to BE but has more glow & silkier, so some will need the rice powder with it. I , personally like glow at 43! LOL I recommend samples to see what color and family (cool/warm) works best for you.

The first time I bought one was JI and the sales gal helped to match me and after that it was easier. I still use the flat head brush from JI and sometimes I use my flock sponge to smooth down the mineral a bit more.

Let us know what you end up liking Very Happy
