Hello..

So these days my skin has gotten super dehydrated I thought maybe I'm not drinking enough water or i'm not using the right moisturizer but.. I drink more than enough water, I supplement with Omega-3 and coconut oil..

for skin care, i cleanse tone and use a hydrating serum, i SLATHER on moisturizer (bee yummy skin food) and then top that off with shea butter and STILL my skin looks rough and dehydrated. When I smile especially you can see all my dry lines.. I really don't understand what's going on .. can anybody give any advice? thanks

What cleanser are you using? A lot of them strip your skin.

I recommend something gentle like cetaphil if you don't mind all the chemicals. I went for this as a last option after 'natural organic cleansers' which did not help me one bit as I couldn't bear the rough bumps on forehead, more noticable nasolabial creases, super tight can't-move-my-face feeling etc.

I also recommend Avene Hydrance Optimale Riche...works wonders and sorts out my skin in no time.

The combination of these two always sort out my skin which is very prone to dehydration.

I also like carrying with me an Evian atomizer and spraying my face at random times when I feel dry during the day, then applying a light coat of moisturizer. Some people think water dehydrates but I never got that concept, esp. if you top it off with a moisturizing seal.

Try eating more oily fish such as mackerel or sardines. Also use walnut or hemp seed oil as a salad dressing. Add flaxseed (milled) to everything. Lots of omega 3 is what you need but the real deal, not just supplements.

I would check your products to see if they have oils in them.

Like dissolves like. In the way that the oil cleansing method can correct oily skin, you may be stripping out your natural oils with a seemingly emollient product...

For example: Ever checked lip balm ingredients? There are some that list one of the first 3 ingredients as Castor oil. An oil, if used alone will strip your skin of all natural oils leaving it uncomfortably dry. GREAT ingredient if you want people to keep reapplying, drying their lips, requiring another application... and then future purchases..

Oils that have worked for my dry skin: apricot kernal oil, squalane, argan, and macadamia.

Perhaps you cold try jojoba, its a wax ester that traps moisture in the skin- it does work because it eventually broke me out!!

Taking hemp oil everyday has worked.

cashmerelover- The spritzer method works wonders for me too. I use the Dermalogica mister in sensitive.

Dehydration often starts from within and the best way to correct it is with "super" hydration and this goes beyond water. Fresh fruits and vegetables which are way more than half water will hold water in your system better than plain H2O and will feed the cells with water in a more substantial way. I suggest a big green smoothie everyday to help.

This is true. I think it was Dr. Murad who said 'eat your water'- hydrate your skin through veg and fruit.

Ok, first of all, I swear by a humidifier for dehydrated skin. Drinking water is certainly good, but you can no more satiate your thirst by taking a bath, than hydrate your skin by downing tons of water... (with apologies to some derm blogger) And the humidifier changes the humidity of the air touching your skin. What is your climate like right now?

Then, from what I remember on the other thread, I think 50% ACV plus tea tree oil plus BP is too harsh. BP did a number on me--I think it's part of the reason I started aging prematurely, and it caused a burning, pink-turning kind of irritation for me. My derm told me to stop using it. ACV might be not too harsh by itself, but I would go for a lower concentration: see discussions on the DIY board about sensitive skin and ACV toner. Tea tree oil... well, maybe it's best to back off and add it in later only if your skin can handle it.

And if you're concerned about acne (that's the only reason I can think of for using such harsh toner and treatment), then I would stop using shea butter--it's a major pore clogger.

When my finicky skin gets upset, I go back to basics: very gentle cleanser like Olay gentle foaming for sensitive skin (bar soaps are often too alkaline to be gentle), just La Roche-Posay Cicaplast at night (a healing ointment, doesn't clog my pores and in fact seems to calm down red spots), and just a zinc-based sunscreen during the day (my old standby was Olay Complete SPF 15 classic gentle formula, but there are good zinc-only choices out there too).

At a young age, being gentle and giving your skin space and time to heal itself is often all you need; if after a stretch of gentleness, you're still unhappy with your skin, I would suggest talking to your dermatologist about Retin A and your concerns.

Being hypothyroid causes dryness. Google hypothyroid symptoms and see if you have other symptoms of the condition, and if so see your dr.

A supplement like Hydraplenish containing hyaluronic acid may help as well - it works to moisturize from the inside out.

Dr Obagi said this as well I think (or words to that effect).

Thank you for the responses everyone!

I know that bee yummy skin food has some oil in it but not that much.. but still maybe it's time for a new moisturizer.

The problem I have with my skin only pertains to my facial skin I actually have soft problem free skin overall (so perhaps hypothyroidism isn't the root cause here) so maybe I just need to be gentle with my face. Someone said cetaphil was gentle so I will try that. In additionnn to the green smoothies.

BP has been the only thing to keep my acne down so I'm going to use it for a little more until I know the internal cause of my acne.

Does anyone think the Oil Cleansing Method will be harsh for dehydrated skin at this point?

It's very very veryyy humid here. I thought I'd have better luck with hydration during the summer here because of the humidity but it's the opposite. I'm going to stop the ACV and drink it instead and use Thayer's cucumber alcohol free toner. It's gentle enough I think

Thank you very much for your input Smile

CeRave in the large jar is an amazing moisture enhancer. Put it on your wet skin out of a shower..a dab goes a long way. It will reinvent your skin..holds in the moisture from the shower all day. I learned about it from a Derm who says it has a cutting edge patent and is what he suggests to his patients with dry itchy skin. I use all the CeRave line now..the cleansing cream, and sunscreen too! It is 15 dollars at Walgreens and Walmart. Oh yeah..and it makes your skin look younger too!

One of the things to do is eat a proper diet, which includes all the foods needed by the body to recuperate. Drinking enough water is good, as well as avoiding all carbonated drinks as it contains a lot of sugar. You must heal yourself from the inside out to see the results, not only taking care of your outside "looks"....

How long you been doing that for (drinking and supplementing) as I've heard it takes between 14-21 days for that to start having a proper effect?

Both cleansers and toners can strip your skin, like LondonJamie - I'm in love with Liz Earle spray toner if you could bottle up that smell and make a perfume out of it - I'd buy it!

There is a book out by Dr Murad I think which talks about eating foods to hydrate your body for that very reason. Might be worthwhile buying a copy or seeing if your library has it.

I agree, make sure that your thyroid is functioning properly. Excessive skin dryness is one of the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Other symptoms include feeling cold all the time, having trouble losing weight, fatigue.

My mum used to say drink more water, you know how the older generation are, especially those who hardly use skincare. It's very humid where I am too, but my legs are really dry and crepy. It's weird because the skin on the rest of my body is normal.

I use to have oily skin until it magically disappeared. wash your face really hard with water first, but don't squish your nose because it'll become flat LOL. then wash your face with a cleanser not as hard. Wash the oily area especially. Then put on the LOTION cataphyll. I use the same thing. That’s all. You should lie back for a while on the make up till your face healed up. so hope my answer helped u out! Smile
