I had a salon microdermabrasion treatment the other day and was quite impressed at how my skin looked afterwards. The pores were definitely much more refined. You're supposed to have a series of six treatments, so I was quite surprised to see some improvement from just one.
As some of you might know from my previous posts I have sebaceous hyperplasia, which is just a fancy name for gummed up pores - I end up with all these little cystic bumps all over my face. After switching from using creams to oils and eating less dairy, there's been a marked improvement - but now I'm thinking microdermabrasion is going to be the way to go. Why I didn't think of this earlier, I don't know.
Now, being an avid fiend for every skin gadget under the sun I thought, why not buy my own machine - so after about 5 mins research I ordered the Timepeel from Nanci at NCN. Now I realise that a home machine is not going to be as good as a professional one, however, at least I can use it whenever I want. It cost $299 so, considering that a course of professional treatments is around $600, I figure it will be a good investment.
When I receive it I'll let you all know what I think about it.
BTW, my husband and I are currently living on a small boat, cruising around the Whitsundays for a few months. Naturally, I've brought every one of my gadgets with me - now I'll be sitting up on deck giving myself a microdermabrasion treatment in the blazing sun!! My husband will be scaling the fish - and I'll be scaling me. |

I had a series of microdermabrasion treatments about 7 years ago before I had an Erbium laser treatment. They are really nice, makes the skin so soft and the pores disappear.
I was also looking at the Timepeel. I will be anxious to see how you do with it. There are just too many gadgets. |

Is microdermabrasion same as a skin spatula? |

No. There are actually two kinds of microdermabasion machines - one works with crystals, one has a diamond head - both methods abrade the skin and vacuum up the debri. So it's basically scraping the dead skin and vacuuming it up. The diamond heads are supposed to be better because you can use them around the eyes and nose. Apparently, the crystals that are used in the other type of machines can get in your mouth, eyes and nose so you can't use it around those areas. |

How does it work?
skin spatula uses ultrasound to remove the debris and oil from the clogged pores.
I dont think which is more effective for cleaning out the pores. |

I use the Chrystalight and yes, it does make a difference. My skin absorbs creams and lotions. Before the microdermabration creams set on the surface. The dead cells form a barrier that doesn't let products penetrate.
Keliu, I've been told not to use it if you're in the sun because your skin will burn much more easily. |

Yes, I do know that - I was being silly, a stupid attempt at humour!
Where did you buy your Chrystalite? |

I received my Cristalift as a gift. It was bought on their website.
My daughter, who works in a Spa, bought me a big container of corondum crystals. I refill the capsules with a small funnel so I don't have to rebuy them once a month. The trouble is the receptacle where the used crystals go has a filter, when that gets saturated the machine doesn't work anymore. Does anyone know if we can buy the receptacle only? |

I just had 15 of the little sebaceous hyperplasia's cauterized at my derm's office.
Not fun, no numbing cream and it hurt pretty bad. Well, at least worse than an IPL. But the burning skin smell is pretty awful.
Now I am waiting for them to fall off after they have all scabbed up. Hopefully this helps. I have a follow up in a month to see how they are.
The derm recommended a microdermabrasion next week to help in the skin molting process.
I used to go get micros once every 2-3 months and I didn't have this problem. Once I stopped, they started popping up. |

I had that done on the larger ones on my forehead - it was a bit of a drama but it was worth it. Trouble was I had hundreds of little ones laying in wait. As I said earlier, I've had allot of success in keeping them at bay by not using creams - instead using Retin-A and oils. Lactic Acid peels help too.
It was your post about your positive response to microdermabrasion that got me back on track with that - I don't know why, but it had gone off my radar. I'm hoping that the home microdermabrasion machine is going to help with managing these horrible little b.......ds. |

Essentially it's blocked pores - if you Google you will find heaps of information. |

Well I am glad I helped you get back on track, because that's what reminded me! Vicious beauty circle!
My hyperplasia were alot worse than I thought as I had more more than my eye could see, obviously! Although I have a sneaky suspicion she zapped some milia too!
Belleza, some, like one or two that I had, can grow quite large and more wart-like. I had originally had them checked out to make sure they weren't skin cancers. I was relieved but that was short lived once I had the pain.
I had not developed them until my mid-forties. |

Annie, you might be interested in this thread started by Vonstella.
http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=34098&highlight=hemp+oil
She has been using Hemp Oil (which is high in linoleic acid) and it has really cleaned out her pores. Here's a quote from the thread:
When linoleic acid is not available in the skin, the sebaceous glands produce sebum with oleic acid and this form of sebum is irritating to the skin. It promotes blockage that causes blackheads, whiteheads and acne. Some scientists have suggested that sebum produced with oleic acid is drier, firmer and therefore it promotes blockage within the follicles, such as blackheads and whiteheads.
I'm a huge fan of all facial oils so I have ordered some Hemp Oil because it sounds like just what I need. |

Couldn't wait until tonight, so just gave it a whirl.
The machine is allot smaller than it looks on the website - which is great because it's very portable. Although, now I'll have to haul it around with all my other gadgets every time I travel somewhere!
I started off the treatment on medium but soon graduated to high. The high setting nearly sucked my face into the machine - so high is the setting for me! What I was surprised about is that it didn't feel much different from the salon treatment that I paid $135.00 for. I was also horrified at the amount of gunk that had been removed from my face and was trapped in the filter. So I used the high setting for most of my face and the medium for under the eye area. The instructions warn not to overuse the machine - I can see why, because I think it's quite effective. I'm going to use it once a week for six weeks, which was the salon recommended protocol.
After the treatment, I wiped my face with the supplied toner and applied my Vitamin C serum. My face is still stinging, which it usually doesn't do, so it's obviously extra sensitive.
All in all, I'm very happy with machine. |

Thanks for sharing. So it really cleaned out your pores? What are the filters for? Must you buy replace them? |

The "filters" are just a tiny weeny patch that gets placed in between the diamond head and the vacuum tube. The machine came with a pack of about 50, but I will eventually have to replace them. |

I have been using Timepeel for about 18 months and stopped going to the salon for treatments as this machine does the job for me.
I also use:

From Rio Beauty.
This works well too but is a bit messy. Crystals everywhere.

I just yesterday placed an order with Nanci for one.
Keliu, I am so glad that it is working for you. Hopefully, it will do the same for me.
Please, keep us posted.
Thanks. |

This post made me do it. I pulled mine out of the drawer and used it this morning. Gave myself a great big hicky right above my lip. Can't wait for the comment my HB will have when he gets home from work.
This is a great tool to have. I just have to be more careful and remember to lower the power on certain areas of my face. |
