Hello
This is my first question! I am very nearly 49. I have noticed that my face is starting to sag. I have just started doing Eva Fraser facial exercises.
When I was 14 my mum moved to the tropics and she used to roast me in the sun for 3 weeks every year with no sun cream (!) thinking it would do me good, I guess! I am now I think showing signs of sun damage. I have hyperpigmentation for which I am using retin A gel.
Please can I have some advice?
I have been using it every few nights, on those nights I do not use any other creams, is this correct?
Assuming this will help with lines, Can I use this nearer my under eyes where I am seeing 'cross hatching' of the skin?
Can I use it on my eye lids?
I haven't noticed it making any difference to the lines, but I assume a few months isn't long enough. (it does seem to be fading the pigment patches)
Can you suggest anything to help the eye area (I read of 'elastiderm' is that okay without seeing a dermatologist? (too expensive to see him again) I've seen it for sale on ebay. Is there something better? I'm starting to get crepey lids and lines underneath.
Is there anything that could help with the sagging? I read about alpha derma which sounded as though it may help. Can you suggest that or anything else?
Thank you so much for your help! |

I am in my thirties and I start to have saggy cheeks after I used an eye cream when I wake up next morning I found my eyes swollen then got normal.later my lower lid became thin and lowered, this caused my cheek to sagg.I tried Kanebo lifting serum and creams for both face and eye useless; now for two months. It is really bothering me cause people are giving me almost ten years older.I am hesitating to go for botox and fillers. Can any body help |

Welcome! The retin A is the best thing you can use. There are so many studies proving it's effectiveness. Your approach of using it every few nights is good, try to get to every other night, or even every night if your skin can take it.
You can apply moisturizer or oils over it if your skin is dry. Be sure to wait about 45 minutes after the retin A though.
As for eye cream...there is really no holy grail. There are tons of reviews on EDS for eye creams. I've personally tried so many - MD Forte eye cream, TNS eye repair, Marie Veronique eye serum and more. The best one for me is Garden of Wisdom's Eye Majik.

You can use retin A below your eyes, but only use very little. Just pat a little on. I don't use it on my eyelids, afraid it would get in my eyes.
Two other things I'd recommend: a good sunscreen used every day and a vitamin C serum. |

Your swollen eyes sound like a possible allergy to an ingredient in the cream.
You might benefit from retin A as well. I'd suggest a visit to the dermatologist to be sure. |

I went to a dermatologist and they put me in Obagi for four years which dried my skin and became thin.He advised me as a solution to go for both filler and botox. ![Mad](images/smiles/mad.gif) |

The Obaji system uses many damaging ingredients which will hurt your skin. This is not true with retin a. It will thicken and repair your skin so I would use it as often you can. I would find a good clean cleanser to help repair your skin barrier too. I use diana yvonne's rose hip cleanser which has no detergents and a low ph both of which make it one of the best cleansers available. Greg |

Greg, have you used Obagi? It utilizes AHA, Hydroquinone, and Retin A. These are the main products. Nothing damaging. The system is meant to be used 18 weeks and then to go on maintenance with the products to be used a few nights a week. |

No i have never used Obaji. Yes the AHA,hydroqinone and retin a are all good products. I believe many of the products such as the cleansers, toners etc all contain damaging detergents that are counterproductive and actually damage the skin. Anything that has Sodium Lauryl Sulfate(SLS) or even Sodium Laureth Sulfate(SLES) will damage the skin barrier. Also if you overdo it on the exfoliators it will thin your skin. Greg |

I'm not sure what you mean by make your lower eyelid droopy. I would not use it on your upper eyelids. You should see your undereye area tighten and smoothout like the rest of your face. It can look a little droopy under your eye i suppose. Greg |

Hello - I've been trying to work out how to reply and put in quote!
Thank you ShastaGirl - it would not have occurred to me to use a cream over the retin a! I have been concerned where I've used it that I have developed fine lines, is this likely to be temporary?
Thank you for your advice - you mention using vitamin C - I have some liquid food supplement - vitasorb c would that do? I understand it degrades in the light, do you think I should use it at night? Over the retin a and the cream? Or would using it in the day under sunscreen do?
I think there may have been a little confusion here with two different questions!
Thank you again |

To Fiwi
I wonder if there is something that could have happened to the muscle - unlikely as you are so young, but something called ectropion can happen usually to older people, but it can be caused by an allergy as suggested by ShastaGirl. Perhaps leaving it free of anything for a time may help |

Try not to panic - if it is that it can be helped with an operation, but giving it time free of cosmetics in case its an allergy may be best |

hi, I get swollen eyes too when i use most eye cream. It is weird. I never thought much of it, just stopped using it. It's annoying. It goes away when I stop the eye cream. I never thought it's allergy, but maybe it's the problem. I do use retin-a under my eyes, and have tried putting little bit on my upper lids. I don't have any issue with retin a.
If I see lines under my eyes or feel the skin there getting thin, i pinch and massage and roll the skin side to side between two fingers, and the next day my skin feels slightly thicker, and the lines are better. I do this when i can remember to do it esp if i'm driving and looking in the mirror. Maybe you can try that, too. I'm pretty aggressive with it, and my skin turns red. If you're just starting out, maybe try not to be too heavy handed. |

Hi - On the vitamin C serum, I make my own. Look at the DIY forum here - there are many recipes. I use Kassy's CE Ferulic version (oodles of thanks to Kassy for posting these over the years! ).
There are also some good purchased serums, although they are pricey - Skinceutials and SkinMedica are good ones. Search for "vitamin c serum" and you'll find mention of other brands people have use.
I use the vitamin C serum in the morning before my sunscreen. It has evened out my skin tone and is a great preventative for further skin damage. I use the retin A at night.
The liquid food supplement may or may not work. Usually you want pure L-ascorbic acid without any fillers. You'll need to check the ingredients on the supplement.
Also, the retin A fine lines you mention are likely to be temporary. Especially if they are under your eyes. It seems that many people using retin A under their eyes have it get worse before it gets better. |

I would suggest you go easy with the retin A if your skin is sensitive. Thin layer, every other day (or even every third day). You could use a cream or oil 45 minutes afterwards if you still feel dry.
I've not used any of the other products you mention - Obaji, Elemis or Gatineau Defilift. For me, the best items are retin A, vitamin C serum and sunscreen. |

Hello Atiyya - I'm using a Boots one (protect and perfect) which has UVA/UVB protection. I use it in the morning and have been using it on the nights when not using retin a. Is there one you could suggest? Many thanks |

Awah I Miss boots the pharmacy,I never used their products tho.If the moisturizer is working fine continue to use it.Are you using something over the retin A at nights?
If you decide to try Vitamin C in a cream or Serum you will want to use it in the day not over the retin A.
Dr. Sebagh Vitamin C Powder Cream is very good.

I think LED Lights are good for sagging skin because they increase collagen and elastin production which decrease as we age. More collagen lifts and plumps out your skin. I'm 40 and have noticed a different when using the red and infra-red lights.
You can read more about it at Acnederm .com - That's where I bought mine. |

I'd personally go for some botox injections. Of course, you have to be careful when choosing the medical clinic to do this procedure. Make sure the surgeon has at least 3 years of experience and the clinic he's working for has good reviews. I'll find some more info about this and post it here. |

I tried botox. I loved what it did to my forehead lines and just under my eyes. But about a week or so after having it I had a couple of what felt like panic attacks, I became very aware of my breathing and swallowing became very noticeable. I was worried that I was having a 'reaction' to it and it has scared me. Has anyone else had a this feeling and gone on to have more with no problem? |
