I can't believe it. I have even more brown spots appearing on the left side of my face. I wear sunscreen religiously, (physical sunscreen,) wear mineral makeup with sunscreen, vitamin C serum under those two layers...wear UV protected wide brimmed hats if I'm out walking or in the sun, run through parking lots with newspapers over my head, stuff large pieces of paper (or anything handy) against my car window to block sunlight coming in, use tazorac 4 times a week, do lactic acid peels weekly, use a DPL unit twice a week, and on and on and on....and what do I have? More hyperpigmentation WHY?! |

I heard it can be a hormonal thing too.I got a lot of hyperpigmentation when I was pregnant ,some people get a good result from obagi. What really helped me? I know this sounds weird but I avoid the sun totally,I even have special shades in my car to cut it out because I drive a lot.I always totally shade my face when I go from the store to car,I even sometimes run my errands at night. Sunscreen can help but just staying out of the sun is what really helped me more than anything.(And I had tried a lot) |

What sunscreen are you using? That would be my first thing I would look at. |

lucyluc - you can look into Heliocare supplement.

There name of the pill that acts as sunscreen from within the body is Heliocare. Active ingredient in the pill is derived from a fern plant, which is natural.
Here is a description I got from one of the web sites that distributes it:
UV Sun Protection in Capsules
protecting solar skin damage from the inside out
Heliocare® is an oral dietary supplement with antioxidant properties which helps maintain the skin's ability to protect against sun related effects and aging.*
Currently Heliocare® (Polypodium leucotomos extract) is the only agent known to provide systemic photoprotection, making it a major scientific breakthrough in sun protection. Although topical sunscreen formulations provide varied levels of protection against UVB and UVA radiation and protect from burning, they cannot completely stop all harmful UV rays from penetrating the skin. Heliocare® works by sustaining the skin's natural ability to deal with sun (UV) related effects and aging.*

Maybe you can try using a stronger SPF sunscreen on your face. I do and I don't have hyperpigmentation... Avoid sun as much as possible or limit it. Also when you put sunscreen, you have to wait 30 minutes BEFORE sun exposure - this is the rule...

A. The left side has been exposed twice as much if your a driver.
B. Sun damage is cumulative over our lifetimes. The damage was done, way before it became visible.
C. For me '50' was the killer as far as aging goes. It seemed to catch me all at once. Every manner of rejuvination and cell turnover came to a screeching halt.
The good news is it's never too late to reverse things a little, or at the very least, slow down the aging process. Just stick with all of the things you are doing which are very beneficial.

P.S. If any of you 'youngsters' are reading this, please, please, please use sunscreen every single day...You'll be soooooo glad you did. |

WOW! I never heard about that. I love the idea of popping a pill instead of dealing with burning eyes and clogged pores day in and day out..
Thanks a bunch......

Do you think the Devita sunscreen is offering enough protection? |

Here's my rountine: I put on my C serum, wait 20 mins then apply my Devita Sunscreen, then put a layer of Z-Cote over the areas that I tend to get discoloration. I also have very bad melasma on my neck so I use Mexitan there. I actually think the Anthelios XL I used to use, was much more protective, but since I wear mineral makeup now, I thought I had to go with the Physical sunscreen. Wish I hadn't stopped using the Anthelios....but it won't mix with MM's --right?? |

I tried the Devita and while it is lovely feeling, I don't believe it offers good protection for people who are prone to hyperpigmentation. Maybe try to find another physical sunscreen? |

You might want to try Skinceuticals C E Ferulic, it actually helps boost the effects of your sunscreen and it has made my hyperpigmentation disappear. |

Hi mountaingirl.
This is my understanding of hyper pigmentation. When you thin your epidermis (top layer) with strong exfoliants, you can not compromise by using sunscreen as no matter how strong there will still be some sun exposure to either UV a,b,c. Sunscreen is a relatively new invention and is not perfect at protecting the skin from all damaging rays....
The next prob is how fair your skin is verses what brand and SPF of sunscreen. There are lot of negative implications of using high spf..do some research and you will see!!
The best thing to do is to strengthen the skin so that it is thicker, not thinner. Vit C is good as it increases collagen/elastic.
I too have the same thing going on and once I stopped exfoliating with harsh products, ex:tazorac or other prescriptives..my hyper pigmentation is much decreased!!! The irony is that I only use mineral makeup on my face, no other spf...
Hope that helps.. |

I think the spots are from inside of your body... according to Chinese Partitioner, failure of function of some organ (liver or else? will cause the brown spots on face... should look into the root for the cause, there are supplement out there claiming to be able to help the organ... |

Maybe it comes from inside, |

About it "coming from the inside." I do believe that is possible, however in this case, not. I'm 55 and have never even had an age spot on my hands, which is usually were those show up (and I believe those are free radicals surfacing.) This is from the sun, since the left side of my face is exposed more when I'm driving. I am hypervigilent about protecting it from the rays that may come through, but obviously to no avail. What Physical Sunscreens do you all like that don't leave too much white residue? |

also, Feliz...I was sitting with the NCN Pumpkin Peel all over my face and neck when your posting about thinning the skin came through. UGH! Yes, it has gotten worse since I started doing peels, but aren't peels also supposed to help get rid of them? As for Tazorac... I know that regular use will definitely help fade them so I could never part with it. |

mountaingirl, I have been using the Becca SPF 30 primer. I like this and so far it is keeping my freckles off. I also love Dr. Lewinn's sunscreen. Both of these are zinc sunscreens. The Becca does not leave a white cast on my face at all. The Dr. Lewinn's is a thick paste and goes on shiny but within 5 minutes it turns matte, at least on my skin. These are my 2 favorite sunscreens at the moment. |

How heavy of a layer of mineral are you using or how heavy is the finish? Also if its wearing off are you reapplying? It sounds like there are other factors that maybe be contributing. Just cause you never had age spots doesnt mean its not gonna happen.
I heard that rosehip oil is good for reducing age spots but I havent gotten around to trying that. Raspberry seed oil is also another natural sunscreen too. |

Could be hormonal...mine are whacko at the moment. Still perimenopausal (at 55) but starting to head towards the big "M." As far as the amount of sunscreens I apply: I am pretty generous with them. I'm going to try some of what you all are suggesting. I use Mexitan on my upper chest which used to be VERY sun damaged and don't have any spots at all there so the Mexitan is working. I am reluctant to use it on my face though because of the slight whitish cast. |

mountaingirl,
The largest factor to your problem is the color of your skin and the thickness!!! If you are fair with delicate skin its difficult to completely get rid of every spot. Estheticians are taught that hyper pigmentation is generally caused from skin damage from when you were a child. If you look at someones skin uder the magnifying glass almost everyone, of most ages above 19 have a lot of hyperpigmentation. The interesting thing is that you can see it when you look at their face.
In Chinese medicine and other holistic modalities it is from the liver, yet you would get "liver spots" which are large and uneven boarders.
There is also a post somewhere on here regarding avocado oil helping. I know rosemosquita (rose hip seed ) oil does help. |
