I saw the similar post from 2005 and thought I'd start a new one a share my experience with LOTS of mascaras. Here is the list of the worst:
1. Maybelline Define a lash---horrible, did nothing for me.
2. Telescopic by L'oreal- did nothing...
3. Physicians Formula Mineral Mascara--Loved for for the first couple of hours and then it left huge dark spots inder my eyes...
4. Almay One Coat Blackest Black-what a nightmare!!!Clumps, clumps, clumps
5. Covergirl-I almost tried them all....Really bad, do nothing
6. Clinique--Terrible!!! Clumps...and more clumps
BEST so far
1. Dior Iconic---nice comb brush BEST by far!!!
2. Lancome fatale--same comb brush
The worst thing that bothers me so much: ALL THE ABOVE COMPANIES test these mascaras on poor rabits
Also, TALIKA-lashes liposome gel did absolutely nothing for me. Ive used it for a month!
PS: I have straight lashes, but full. I use curler which helps quite a bit... |

Do Clinique and Dior test on rabbits? :S dang
My faves so far:
Clinique Naturally Glossy for really natural, daytime wear full looking lashes.
Diorshow - for thick black lashes
Max Factor False Lash effect for a really full out lash look,
and Max Factor Masterpiece for a slightly more subtle but still dramatic look |

irunchik--- have you tried Smashbox's Bionic mascara? That sucker is seriously HG for me, and best of all, it has the PETA seal of approval: 110% cruelty-free, yay!! It's dramatic without being over-the-top, provides a good amount of volume, and is the blackest black I've ever experienced in a mascara. I put it through the ultimate test this holiday season: I rolled out of bed at 6AM, applied Bionic, dragged myself to the airport, fought the crowds, wrestled my luggage, struggled through security, boarded the plane, deplaned, drove 2 hours to get to my family's house, and by bedtime that night the darn stuff was still going strong---- no smudges or anything! Just for comparison's sake I put Diorshow through the same test on the trip home, and half way through the day it had migrated from my lashes to under my eyes, not cool! |

I'm going to get the Smashbox for sure. My worst mascara experience by far is LashFusion. It came off within a couple of hours all over my eye socket and over my upper cheeks. Most embarrassing was the fact that someone pointed this out to me. I just about died when I looked in the mirror. I emailed Fusion's customer service, politely asking if the was "anything" they would be prepared to do about this and never even received the courtesy of a response. Had they responded, I would have had a better perspective on the company as a whole. |

Best:
Rimmel Volume Flash Curved Brush Mascara- Great build-able volume, separation, my go to for a "night" look.
Ecco Bella FlowerColor Natural Mascara- I love the short ingredient list, has never flaked, smudged and the black is intensely dark. It also has a bonus mirror on the side of the tube. This would be my go to but I'm not in love with the brush (its a lot like the Maybelline great lash, which I loathe) so I use a curved brush from another brand.
Sadly my favorite of all time mascara is now impossible to find, it was the Maybelline Lash Discovery waterproof version with the curved brush. IMO a fantastic no fail mascara, perfect lashes every time.
Worst:
*Now, this list could go on and on as I can really hate on some mascara but I will narrow it down to the top 3 that truly disappointed.
Maybelline Great Lash- Clumpy, smudgy, spidery lashes. By the time I'm done and all my lashes are stuck together it looks as if I have exactly 4 upper lashes per eye. My blood pressure is rising just thinking about it so lets move on...
Dior DiorShow Mascara- I know this is HG for a lot of people, aka crack for lashes but I have seen the * spam alert * go too far too many times. This is in the top running for over application abuse. I have to compare this mascara to plastic surgery addictions. People don't know when to stop(this coming from someone who likes dramatic lashes). When I worked at Dillard's MU counter I watch a woman I worked with apply this daily in heavy coats until her beautiful long lashes started to break off at the roots! I really believe that this is one of the worst formulas on the market. Despite all that I cannot justify spending 30+ bucks on a product that dries out in half the time a drugstore formula would. Dior should be ashamed.
Jane Iredale Longest Lash Mascara- Again for 30+ bucks I expected better. This was very, very stiff/crunchy/clumpy when dry(even when used with the lash conditioner she suggests) and I could not build layers. I have yet to try the other two she offers. |

Everyone has different needs and preferences when it comes to mascara. I have short, fine, sparse lashes that are stick-straight. I need thickening, some lengthening and curl-holding ability. I've found 'wet' mascaras with thin formulas (rather than gooey, waxy, creamy or 'dry' ones) work best for me. These type don't always volumize as much as I'd like, but I just use Shiseido's Mascara Base underneath for that.
The bad: Maybelline Great Lash; anything by Max Factor, Almay or Rimmel (too dry, waxy and clumpy); L'Oreal HIP High Drama (clumpy, smeary mess); anything by Neutrogena (only works if you already have full, dark lashes and if you do, why bother with mascara?); Stila Major Lash; Chanel Exceptionnel and Extracils (neither holds a curl)
The good: Kiss Me (great for lower lashes if you're prone to smearing like I am); Maybelline Full 'n' Soft waterproof (good everyday mascara, holds a curl beautifully); Cover Girl Volume Exact; Maybelline Lash Stylist (tricky to work with and requires a lot of combing, but you can get really huge, fake-looking lashes with this); Maybelline Volume Express (a little more dramatic than F'n's). |

BEST for staying power: Clinique Lash Power: a "tube" mascara, meaning it forms a little tube around each lash and stays on til you gently pull it off with warm water. Doesn't smear or smudge or migrate.
BEST for beauty: Fresh SuperNova + FIrebird
Worst: Maybelline Great Lash - flakes and smudges |

What is the deal with mascara I wish I knew....you think you have an HG but as soon as a new one hits the market - we gotta try it! I have tried to many it's frightening. But for me - The best:
There was one by L'Oreal that is now discontinued that I used for several years...began with an "A". I really liked it - but oh wait...they STOPPED making it. sigh.
Another discontinued fave - Maybelline Illegal Lengths - just an all out FINE mascara. No clumps, smudges, irritation - and oh wait - they STOPPED making it.
So right now I've been using CG Lash Blast - I think this mascara is either a love or hate - I'm somewhere in the middle, but more on the love side. What I hate is that it dries out really quickly.
As someone else mentioned, Blinc's Kiss Me is great for lower lashes especially for those of us who tend to get racoon eyes. I do like it for that reason. HATE it on upper lashes.
WORST - HATED Dior Show. I started to think there was something wrong with me b/c so many people love it. I did a side by side with the CG Lash Blast and not only did the Dior flake on me but it made my lashes droop even with the eyelash curler.
I had ordered that sample mascara pack from Sephora a few months back - the one with all their "best selling" mascaras - and there wasn't ONE that worked for me. I am glad I never spent the money on the full size.
For as much as I like the CG Lash Blast - I will be perfectly honest in saying that I'm still on the hunt for the perfect HG. Is it out there for me? Will I have any lashes left when it finally hits the market? Stay tuned.

I've been on the lookout these past few months for a "natural" mascara -- one with no animal testing and without all the preservatives and other "gunk" in it (though obviously it's still mascara ). I also didn't want to spend $40 a tube (cough -- Jane Iredale). My fav so far is Zuzu Luxe the mascara in Espresso (the sticker indicates a light brown but it's really more of a black/brown). It's not perfect, but I'm not getting raccoon eyes and flaking is minimal. I'd like a little more separation, but it works well on a regular basis.
Real Purity was all the rave on some other sites, but it made my eyelashes soooo stiff and crunchy feeling. Hated the wand too. No separation and lots of clumping.
For reference, I used various Maybelline, Loreal and CG mascara before this new experiment (the most recent was Maybelline Unstoppable). The natural mascara doesn't provide as much "ooomph" as the drugstore versions, but I got used to that after a few days. Now my only question is whether a "natural" mascara is important or if I should go back to "regular" versions and save my natural $ for skincare. Any opinions? (Or perhaps this is a for a different post! ) |

My HG for five-six years now has been Blinc Kiss Me - because mascara on my lashes always ended up under my eyes, or above my eyes. Everything smudged like crazy. My eyelashes are very long - a nice thing to have going - but they're pretty pale and disappear half way. They look much better with mascara!
Kiss Me is one of the "tube" mascaras, and has been great in humid weather, through crying, etc. But it isn't cheap - $24 a pop, I think. I didn't realize that Clinique has a tubing mascara now as well! I'll have to look into it.
I can definitely recommend Kiss Me - and it comes in several colors! I usually get black. I do not need or want lengthening or thickening, so it's worked well for me. I'm also an occasional contact-lense wearer and I've never had issues with Kiss Me flaking.
Good luck in your search! |

Love the Jane Iredale mascara...got a large sample of it at my derm clinic where I got my Juvederm shot. It makes my lashes look long and wispy and I will be purchasing the full version of it when I have the chance. It has a fibrous looking texture to it, not creamy and clumpy...
The worst I have tried was the Loreal Voluminous mascara....what a clumpy horrible mess that stuff was!!! I actually had to wipe the brush with tissue to get some of it off before I applied it...that lasted about a week and in to the trash it went. |

My HG's always get discontinued too.
First was L'oreal Voluminous, but they didn't stop making it, they changed the formula! From great to horrible. A couple years ago there was a thread here with all of us agreeing that this had happened. As someone mentioned above too, their Architect line came pretty close, but they stopped making that too.
Then I had the most perfect combo ever, Rimmel made one that curls and one with Lycra, if I used the curling one first, then the Lycra I was in heaven, but......no more Lycra. The curling one is still around and not bad, but doesn't add the volume the Lycra one did.
Now I am liking pretty well the Maybelline Colossal. I actually have had complements on my lashes with this stuff, and I never get complements on anything. It was sold out at WalMart a few weeks ago so I tried the XXL extensions formula, but I wasn't impressed so I ordered more Colossal from drugstore.com, it was BOGO 50% so pretty good deal.
I'm pretty happy with it, but if Rimmel had the Lycra version again, I might go back to that combo.
I did get a sample of Too Faced mascara, from EDS I think, and it was really nice if you have pretty good lashes and don't want the clumping, etc. It goes on very smooth and silky. Also had a sample of Lancome Defincils I liked, but maybe would stick with it only for going out, etc. |

Right now I'm using 100% Pure Lengthening Conditioning Mascara in black tea. It's really nice-- I think my lashes are actually longer since I've been using it. I wouldn't say it's the BEST, since it tends to clump on application, but it doesn't flake. Stays put all day long. I also like the brand, their take on cosmetics.
I've also really liked BE Big Tease, I think I'm the only one here who likes Maybelline Great Lash, and I used to like Soft n' Full but the last time I bought it, it flaked on me. Maybelline Define a Lash is good, too.
Bad? I haven't had a bad one in a while. Awhile ago I bought a bunch of mascaras with those rubber wands and bad ones were Physicians formula, Rimmel... |

PS- Maybelline Full & Soft is a pretty good d/s everyday mascara that's cheap, easy to take off and doesn't flake. It isn't waterproof however and will smear if it gets wet.
Doesn't clump and it's easy to apply in a hurry. |

My favorite mascara is Cover Girl's Last Blast. I've tried many mascaras from high to low end and this one works the best for me.
I really disliked Mac's Zoom lash. It didn't give me the "pow" I like my lashes to have. |

Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara - tons of volume, length, and curl.
worst:
benefit bad gal lash mascara - not only does it smudge but does nothing to lengthen or volumize. |

I am obsessed with Lancome Hypnose in waterproof formula. I got this little tip from a girl I did a show with and I have used nothing but.
I am asian and have straight lashes and have to heat up my eyelash curler with a blowdryer before I put anything on. At this point, mascaras with makeit or breakit with me. 80 percent will weigh down my lashes and make them straight again. However, Hypnose keeps the curl all day long and ads volume and length! I love it and my sisters have all converted with me!
If you have a better option than this 20 dollar tube, please tell me. I can go broke with it. I have one tube in my makeup kit, my purse and my desk at work just in case. |

Lately I have been using CG lashblast and it works great for me. The worst mascara I have ever tried is Maybeline Great lash. It leaves my lashes clumpy and dry. But I definitely want to give some of these others that were suggested a try. |

As I wear very little m/u, my must have item is mascara, and I've tried a TON!! No HG yet
I wear waterproof mascara every single day, so all the ones I've listed would be w/p versions. I have nice lashes, thick but light. I NEVER leave the house w/o mascara, so be assured I'm pretty discriminating. As you're suppose to replace it every 3-4 mos and with the economy be bad, I'd rather buy d/s or keep the cost under $25.
Good: Lancome Definicils ($$$ though), Maybelline Define-a-lash (green tube)(good separation), Maybelline Volume Lash (newer, red tube, similar to last one).
Bad: CG Lash Blast (thick & clumpy), BB (not waterproof like it said), Maybelline Great Lash (does nothing, drying), CG Marathon (like putting cement on lashes), Clinique (long time ago, stung my eyes), L'Oreal Voluminous (clumpy), MF 2000 Calorie (clumpy).
My wish list: definition/separation, good staying power/no racoon eyes, w/p, black. |
