Hi everyone, especially you smokers. I wish I could post a picture of my mom although I know she would never forgive me! She is 83 years old, a great golfer, very energetic, cooks 5 nights a week. She has smoked for the last 30 years or more (lots of it in secret so who knows) and has some of the most wrinkled skin I've seen. She finally gave up smoking because her doctor said he wouldn't treat her if she didn't (she has asthma). She is so unhappy with her skin, has been for years and anything she tried to improve it has had little or no affect. She is so young in so many ways but her skin is a dead giveaway. Sad I know how hard it is to quit, I did it myself, but if looking your best is as important as I think (after all, you're here Smile), then consider what it may do to your looks down the road. Believe me when I say I'm not being critical, I just want to offer a little extra motivation. I applaud you if you're trying to quit.
FWIW

BTW, my mom's 2 sisters have beautiful skin, they are non smokers.

I know....I'm trying. Sad Quitting smoking has never been successful for me. It's the hardest thing I've ever tried to do.

Nanapost,
I know you are right. Whats the point in spending all this money on skin care and still smoking Question Sad
I am going to set a date and give up. Will need lots of support and I know you are going to give it.(you may regret this posting) lol.
I saw a programme on tv with identical twin sisters aged about 40, one smoked, one had never smoked. The smoker looked 10 years older than the non smoker.
I pledge to try harder.

and me!!!! ive smoked since around 16 (im now 36). ok so im a stress head but still i should be able to stop, shouldnt I Confused i was smoking around 20 a day - now ive cut down to 2 max per day. it was hard at first just cutting down but maybe after a while i will crave less as my body is not used to having so much nicotine and i can stop altogether. i did try to stop before cutting down but this way (so far has been easier). hopefully as i feel better in myself and notice the difference with not smoking so much it will also make it easier to stop. as for my skin - well i look a lot older. not only have i been a smoker for years but i suffered with anorexia from the age of 17 up until about 5 years aog. all this put together has ruined my skin. now im trying desperately to sort it out. we see all the signs of the bad things it does to people but it doesnt make it any harder for us to stop.

maybe we can help each other Very Happy

I quit 100 days ago. I used the patch and found that it helped A LOT! I have noticed a huge change in my color already..a nice glow, more energy, food tastes better, my teeth after my cleaning and bleaching are nice and white, the lip lines above my lips are less noticeable, eyes are brighter and I smell better. I think the weight gain thing is a myth..or maybe I was just lucky.
Hope some find this encouraging

Bebba that is encouraging! I'm always worried about weight gain since I'm not skinny anyway.

Congratulations on the success!

Hi everybody, I quit smoking 7 weeks ago and feel so great!! My skin is just so much healthier looking, I actually have colour in my cheeks and no longer have to wear makeup, just some mascara and lip gloss.
I'm 39 years old and smoked about half a pack a day since I was 16 years old, sometimes a pack if I was drinking alcohol! Rolling Eyes
I haven't gained any weight either, I'm actually losing because I'm watching what I eat and walking alot more these days Very Happy !!!

You guys are just wonderful. Quitting is a process, sometimes a long process. I think so much of it is psychological. The physical * spam alert * is powerful for sure but even after it has lost its physical hold on you, there's so much more. Some things that helped me are:

1) deep breathing to relax, after all taking that long drag form a cigarette is just that

2) set short term goals, even a day at a time, an hour, whatever works for you and then reward yourself with even something little

3) once you've stopped, try to get into the mindset of a non-smoker. I used to say to myself over and over, "I'm a non-smoker"

4) any kind of exercise is really helpful because the less you smoke, the easier exercise becomes, then the more you exercise, its such a great release of tension that you'll likely need that ciggie less.

It sounds like some of you have already taken the leap, that is just so great. Salster69, if you're down to 2 a day, that's amazing, I know you'll be able to do it. It's all do-able, you just have to find your way. If you start great skincare and then some exercise, even just walking), you're on your way. Don't be too hard on yourselves. Just try yout hardest to sick with it. We're all here for support.

I'm sorry to have rambled on so much, its very late and I'm very sleepy. Good night dear people and good luck. Lets keep the discussion going.

I don't smoke so I can't say I know exactly what you guys are going through but I just wanted to say good on you for deciding to quit! I'm sure you will all succeed and will see fabulous results in terms of health and fitness. Your skin looking better will be the cherry on top (and what a sweet cherry it is! Laughing ).

...remember if you do 'slip', it's only one day, don't think 'sod it, may as well start again'. I've been giving up for 14 years and so far I've held out for 8 months or so with only about 10 fags to sully my record Smile

I think it's like being an alcoholic, you are always 'recovering'. You never become a non-smoker only an ex-smoker

To all of you trying to give up smoking. It's the best thing you can do for yourselves. Stay positive!! My mom who is 78 and has smokers skin. She gave up smoking after 50+ yrs of smoking. It really does take a toll on your skin.

Having just been to the Van Halen concert on Friday night, let me tell you this: for as much money, fame, and talent that Ed Van Halen has ... he also has some of the scuzziest-looking teeth I've ever seen! He is a chain smoker.

He has smoked for years, and was treated for oral cancer a couple of years ago. He had a cancerous lesion removed from his tongue, and went through treatments for the cancer. Nixed smoking for a while too. Guess who's smoking again? Embarassed

The man smokes when he's playing (places cigarette in the axe of his guitar), during interviews, etc. Lovely. Looking a little rough! Fersure. As for the teeth, they are greyish yellow, and have black in-between. Pretty. Someone hasn't invested any money into dental hygiene. Yuck! And, yes, I was close enough to see all of these details, and more-so.

Leaves me sad, as I am a big fan, and would hate to see him become ill again...

Maybe I should have sent him some smoking patches as a gift? (did you know that those also help people with Crohns/Colitis?)

Take a look at his scuzzy smile in this pic! http://www.vhlinks.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB2&Number=665691

Hi all

Sorry ive not been around for a little while. hope everyone is ok????

just thought id let you know my most recent progress on quitting smoking. Well Friday 29th Oct i bought some herbal cigerettes. ths contain marchmallow, rose leaves and herbs -- no nicotine and tobacco. ok they do contain 3mg of tar (i know thats still bad) but i have managed without the nicotine all weekend. feeling quite pleased. Figure that if i do this i will stop the craving and the habit will just go. well that is the plan. got to be worth a try.

hows everyone else getting on??? anyone trying something else??

we well suceed Very Happy

It can be done! I went from a pack a day smoker to none virtually overnight (Ok the fact that I was sick as a dog with a chest infection for the first 2 weeks really did help)... that was, gosh a good 7 years ago. My husband quit at the same time as me and we have never looked back.

I did have a couple of half-hearted attempts to quit before that, but getting so sick was the catalyst that helped me do it.

Funny thing was.. my asthma actually got worse after I QUIT.. go figure. Guess all the tar was keeping the Tokyo smog out of my system. Laughing

It is possible to reverse a lot of damage that smoking and other skin wreckers like over-exposure to sun. You can't expect miracles, but you can acheive a lot of good results. First you must get facials at least 6 weeks worth once per week. Make sure that they are extremely hydrating such as infrared, collagen, or parrafin mask. After that you will need at least several weeks worth of Photo Rejuvenation at one session every 7-10 days. You must stop smoking of course for this to have the most benificial effect. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water to hydrate the skin is essential. Use a very mild skincare line that contains botanicals to sooth your skin and use them faithfully twice per day. Only clease with a cleasing cream, use a very mild toner with absolutely no alcohol, and a rich creamy moisturizer. Ingest at least 1 tablespoon of olive oil or food grade cocoanut oil per day. You'll see a big difference after this regimen guaranteed.
