I've been using Clear with Retin A 0.05% for a couple of weeks while I wait for my Blender to arrive. I'm not using anything at the moment except hempseed oil as my peeling and flaking was quite bad and a lot of people were commenting at work.
The peeling around my mouth has mostly subsided now but it's left my once normal skin quite dark, and the hyperpigmentation on my upper lip has got darker - my moustache is quite visible!!
I'm so worried. Should I stop or continue? Will this eventually fade? What should I do?
Any advice/your own experiences re this would be much appreciated, thanks. |

What sunscreen are you using?
Are you using all the Nu Derm products, or just the Clear and Retin A?
I know for some people the spots do get darker before they start to lighten up. Not sure why your overall skin is darker, though, and it makes me think your sunscreen is not protecting you enough. |

Hi Rileygirl
My overall skin hasn't got darker, just the areas around my mouth where the irritation and peeling is worse. I was using clear at night and then waiting at least 30mins before applying retin-a. Nothing during the day apart from sunscreen.
The sunscreen is 22% zinc oxide. I only apply it once in the morning, no re-applications. |

I agree with Rileygirl. Sometimes hyperpigmentation will get darker before it starts to fade. You are just uncovering what was about to come to the surface of your skin eventually. Either that or your sunscreen isn't protecting you enough. |

Yes, my thoughts exactly, Keli13.
gb00, see how it goes for about 6 weeks. If things don't start lightening up, I would strongly suggest adding the Blender to mix with the Retin A (actually I would really suggest the entire program, as it really does all work together to help everything penetrate, etc.). The 22% zinc really should be providing enough coverage, but make sure you are applying enough! Good luck! |

Hi guys
Thanks for your advice. I've just received the blender in the mail so I'll include that in the regimen and see how it goes.
I'm hoping you're right and it's just a case of getting worse before it gets better. |

Hi gb00,
I think if you look back on some of the older Obagi threads, you'll find that a lot of people experienced worsening of their hyperpigmentation before it got better. I think that's kind of true with Obagi in general! It's just part of the "out with the old phase." Let us know how it's going! |

It might be getting worse before it gets better, but I would also be cautionus of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. |
