Hi, I've just been reading about problems women who have been taking Fosamax, Actonel, and other prescription meds for osteroporosis are having.
Anyone have any knowledge/insight on this topic? |

No I don't have any knowledge but I do take meds for osteoporosis, for the past 5 years, with some months I go off it. I also take calcium with D and magnesium and zinc. as well as diary but I would like to consume less diary as I want to avoid inflammatory foods. I am getting a bone scan this fall and will see if it is making a difference. I walk a lot and am going to go back to lifting weights as weight bearing exercises are supposed to build bone density. what are your thoughts? It is such a pain when there is a down side to so many good things. |

My mother took fosamax one time & was thrown into so much pain in her esophagus she thought she was having a heart attack. She now takes the calcium & vit d and the Reclast infusion once a year, this is her third year - she has seen significant results, improvement in bone density. |

Wow, your mother had a severe reaction. That reminds me, when I first started on osteo meds (Actonel at first, then Fosamax) I had terrible chest pains. I thought I was going to pass out. Anyway, I kept taking it (dumb me, and I never had a reaction like THAT again.
I'm not familiar with Reclast, but will read up on it. Glad your mother is doing better. |

This talks about Fosamax. I didn't take my regular dose yesterday. Unless I find out something to change my mind, I'm off it for good. |

Mars this is an excellent article.....thanks!
I was diagnosed with osteopenia ten years ago and told to go on Fosamax. I had an inner knowing that it was not good for me so I resisted and found a very good doctor that had been doing research on the disease. He strongly advised me not to take the fosamax and to exercise and try to get my supplementation from foods. He did suggest calcium, mag, and vitamin D. He said the quality of bone that fosamax built was not quality and would cause more problems than help. This article supports that! |

Mars. thanks for the article. I will have time to read it on the weekend. I feel similarly to others, but I do keep taking it. I worry that the once a year shot might not agree with me and then I'd have it in my system. I agree with the diet part but I'm not sure even that would help. I am making a new effort to get more exercise and to start lifting weights etc. wish they would come up with something that had no side effects. Harriet |

Certainly each individual responds different from the next, but I will say that my mother is quite delicate, is allergic to most everything possible, and the dr. told her the Reclast would likely give her flu-like symptoms for a couple of days - but she fares well each time, a little more tired than usual but certainly not flu-like. |

I am certain I've done the right thing by stopping Fosamax. |
