I love this stuff! I get my hair colored often, but it's always within the red family. Unfortunately, red dyes fade the fastest, so I use this stuff at least once per week to refresh my color and keep it gorgeous. Other than my hands when I apply it, I haven't any problems with staining, although if you get it along your hairline, simply wipe with a tissue or cotton pad soaked with shampoo or "Seabreeze" astrigent and it will come right off (same trick for when you get "real" hair dye on your skin!). To remove the stain from my hands, I simply sprinkle some granulated sugar onto my wet hands along with a squirt of soap and wash my hands as usual -- the sugar acts as a 'scrub' and removes the red stain in a jiffy.
Please keep in mind that simply by virtue of containing hair colorants, this conditioner will NOT suffice on its own to moisturize hair, so you will need to use a deep conditioner regularly to keep your hair in tip-top shape. Here's a hint: when I apply the Annato conditioner, I apply a coating of my L'oreal Natures Therapy Mega Moisture Mask/Conditioner (a 'poor man's' version of Keratese, available at Sallys Beauty Supply in U.S.) on top of the Annato conditioner so my hair color is revived at the same time as its deep-conditioned! Also, keep in mind that the longer you leave the Annato conditioner (or any color enhancing cond for that matter!) on your hair, the more intense the color deposit will be...sometimes I leave it on for a couple hours at a time, and you wouldn't believe how stunning the resulting color is!! I've repurchased this many times over the years and until or unless they manage to invent a red hair dye that doesn't fade within a week, I will continue to do so.
FYI - the Annato conditioner is a deep, dark warm red. Aveda also has another red color enhancing conditioner called "Madder Root" which is more fiery orange...actually, they have a whole range of colors from blonde to darkest brunette/black, so if you need to refresh your dye job, just pick the color that suits you best. Also, if you go to an Aveda 'signature' salon, they will actually make you a custom color enhancing shampoo or conditioner specifically made (on the spot) for your hair color, and it costs the same!
