I've wondered about this too. I did read that computers emit UV rays...not sure how much credence that has, though. |

yeah same here. I heard those old traditional monitors will emit radiation. The new flat screen monitor doesn't as much. Also, I wonder if the copying machine is gonna emit radiation too? I sit right next to it. It's those big ones that can copy/ fax...
I guess wear sunscreen on face if you're gonna be staring at the monitor for a long time |

reading on the computer screen makes my eyes dry, and i tend to squint and make faces when i'm puzzled- its doing terrible terrible things to my eye wrinkles!
and i've noticed that sitting in front of the screen for hours makes my body bloated- i guess from not moving around and circulating the blood and not regulating my water intake.
does anyone else notice fat ankles? oh my! |

I think that being stuck in an office all day, with air con, no fresh air, dust, coffee and little moving around does more harm for your skin than the actual computer screen |

Invention idea: add LEDs and lasers to monitors so that we can receive various treatments while we're working at our computers. |

I suspect that Computers do have an effect after all the screen is a mixture of rays and all. I suspect its much like anything an odd dash of them is ok, but prolonged exposure without protection isn't. I know one company alittle while ago produced a cream for PC users to apply - claiming it prevented damage to the skin, and when I emailed them asking what they had based that on, they told me it was a company study that they had done which wasn't available to public and I figured that kind of discredited it in my mind. In the UK they have laws whereby your not supposed to sit at your computer screen for longer than an hour without a break of some sort away from it, but very few people follow it. I suspect that many years from now, we're learn that there is good reason they suggest so. |

Hi there SeanySean, that sounds scary that comp. monitor causes damage to the skin. Do you know what kinda damage? Is it cuz it emits UVA rays like those from the sun? I heard the new flat screen monitor doesn't really emit any radiation. So does that mean I'm fine? |

I know it sounds scary, but I doubt there is a lot of backing behind it if they were unwilling to share the study. I suspect its the UVA rays. You know what UVA/UVB rays from the sun do to our skin, so I suspect its a combo of the UVAs from the screen that they're talking about.

I don't think it's actual emittion but strain, but my eyes got significantly worse 2 years ago when I went to the eye dr. I now stay at home with my children and this year visiting the eye dr I barely have a prescription now. |

I know it has made my eyes extremely dry because of staring at a computer screen all day and forgetting to blink. |

I know it's bad to be in front of the screen for 8+ hrs like at least 5days a wk. But we need to work!! Would applying sunscreen help? I guess it does to a certain degree. Also, I'm using flat screen so safer? |

My computer engineer husband just laughed when I asked if computer monitors emit UV rays. His answer is no. That doesn't mean that sitting in front of a computer all day isn't bad for your health. No exercise, eyestrain, carpal tunnel in the wrists from typing, back and neck strain from sitting in unsupportive chairs are all bad. But not a UV hazard.
So get up and move around, make sure your wrists are in a comfortable palne for typing, and take frequent breaks. But don't worry about UV--cathode ray tubes aren't an issue. |
