OMG what a roller Coaster, I want to stop using it everyday. Is this normal? How do you know if Retin A is just not for you? I have .05 tretinon cream and have had breakouts after breakouts and peeling/flaky patches all over, raised red areas on my forehead that itch....and then the breakouts leave brownspots and I just wonder if it's worth it. I am 47 dry skin, so it makes it even drier...I am moisturizing alot....always have...I bought the ceravie cream and it's nice...but it's so hard to know what is working or not. I so want to do something to help my skin look better without spending a million dollars to do it and I thought this was a good beginning as it's proven to work.....BUT holy cow...I don't know if it is meant to be for me...how do you know? |

kittyd, I'd suggest that you cut back to a lower strength Tretinoin cream and use 2-3 nights a week till your skin becomes more aclimated.
How long have you been using RA? |

slow down and use a lower strength! u can also put some oil before it as a buffer. |

A couple of other suggestions-
Wait 20 minutes after washing before applying the retin a. Only apply a pea sized amount for your entire face.
After applying, you can buffer with your Cerave lotion. |

You have to really ease into it. Start with lower concentrations, only every other day, wait after washing. If that's still to irritating, you can buffer it by applying moisturizing lotion first. |

I tried Retin-A and then I decided to stop using it. My skin was clear of Acne prior to using Retin-A and when I got off I had horrible break outs for months. I told my experiences to an holistic doctor. She stated that it could have disrupted the Vitamin A balance in my skin.
I think anyone who is staring off using Retinoids should stick with retinol which is not as strong a Retin A. Especially people with sensitive skin. They should see how their skin responds and then work their way up.
For example the brand Replenix has different levels of Retinoids staring off with 2..3 then so on. So this is my opinion. I hope it helps. |

I agree totally with SCJ...start with a lower strength retinoid like Green Cream or Skinceuticals and work your way up. That is exactly what I did...
I think my use of retinoids for several months prior to retin-a allowed me to ease in to the retin use without a severe reaction, just a bit of redness and flaking around the mouth for a few weeks with daily use....
It goes much better when you ease in to it and not just jump in head first. Not every one can tolerate retin-a on a nightly basis and some cannot tolerate it at all...so you need to start back to square one and cut your usage time per week and perhaps start with a lower dose of retin-a or a retinoid for a while...once you get acclimated to that, gradually build up from there.... |

I started out with green cream level 3 and worked my way up to level 9, it took me 3 years to get to that point. I now use retin-a 0.5 almost every night ![Smile](images/smiles/smile.gif) |

Everyone is different, but for me(I use 0.05 tretinoin) and wait 30 mins before putting on the RA,and then even wait 1 hour before putting on moisturizer and that really seems to help. |

Along with a lot of information on the web this might interest those who have those initial breakouts and why they happen in the beginning.

I don't wait the 20 minutes cuz i'm too lazy, but i use 0.025% strength, and also I don't use it every night. I alternate with a homemade cream my mom bought for me. I noticed my skin looks very bright and tight when I use this cream. Then when I start to see fine lines, I go back to retin a. |

Thank you ladies...I guess I needed some support to keep going. I was doing all of those things except putting the moisturizer on an hour later. So I will try every other day or every third day and see how it goes. What about a topical vitamin C....does that help or would that make it worse. I have Clarasonic I use at night and just use Purpose to wash my face with. Any other suggestions to add to this routine to help. |

That sounds good kittyd. Just experiment, even if you can only handle 1 night a week, then 2 nights etc. gradually working up, your skin will eventually aclimatize. Some people only ever use it 2-3X a week.
Iwouldn't use vit.c serum yet. It will only add more sensitivity. You can always add that in later.
Waiting 20 min. after washing before applying helps. Another thing that might help is using a moisturizer specifically for reactive skin to sooth it.
I like to spritz on Avene thermal spring water after washing if my skin feels sensitive.
Just some suggestions HTH |

kittyd - you have been some good advice already.
I agree about not using the Vit C serum, atleast for now. It can be irritating and you wouldn't want to add any irritation now.
Thermal water is a good idea too. I like La Roche Posay. I spirtz it on before anything else. I find it helps with irritation.
I also wanted to add that my skin never like retin-a not matter what I did but oddly it does great with tazorac. |

I should have said this before. When you do put RA on make sure you rub it in good, don't just let it lay on the skin,it will make you red and irritated. You will still be alittle but not as much.Rileygirl told me this a year ago and it worked well for me.HTH |

Okay Spring Water Spray...sounds nice. Rubbing it in....yes, I think I do this because you put on so little I am trying to rub it all over. What is the difference between tretonin and tazorac? |
