If I had the money to spare I'd get my nails done professionally but I don't so I'd like to know what I can do at home to get long hard nails. Right now I apply white iodine on a daily basis, it helps with the length but I can't keep them long, they bend as easily as a piece of paper. I don't like keeping polish on them for extended periods of time because of the discoloration it causes. Can anyone offer some tips on what I can buy to get professional looking results at home. |

If you have a good base coat polish should not discolor your nails. Mine do best when I keep them polished. My polish never yellows my nails. I use nailtek foundation for my base.
You could try taking biotin. Maybe find it helpful for nail and hair. There is a product called Appearex which is pricey for what you get, its just 2.5mg of Biotin. You can just buy biotin from the vitamin section, its cheap. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I already take Biotin for quite a few years, can't say it did anything for my nails but I noticed my hair grows much faster than it did. I also just purchased a product called Quimica Alemana Nail Hardner. Maybe that will help. |

This may be off topic...I made a hand / foot balm with beeswax, cocoa and shea butter and various oils, also EO's just because they smell great. Rubbed that into my hands and particular attention to the nail and cuticle area...and 2 weeks later my nails were growing long and strong...I am now again using nail polish. That balm is also wonderful on dry elbows, knees and lips.
Let me know if you want the recipe for it. |

Mavala scientifique nail hardener.
Works to harden and repair split nails instantly!
I absolutely must always have some at home!
It really works to harden the tips of your nails.
You apply the amount the size of a tiny drop just on the tip of your nails and it absorbs right away.
looks like there is nothing on your nails too!
The bottle seems small as the small size is 2ml and large 5ml
-they have the product in a pen,but it is more and you only get 2ml..so in all these years have never bothered with their nail pen...
I think you are supposed to use scientifique nail hardener 2x a week to start, then 1x a week, if you use it too often your nails will get too hard and break!
A 5ml bottle lasts me almost 1 year as I just use some every week or 2 if even.
I also have the Mavala base coat, top coat and stuff for drying nail polish.
I find from using all their products my nails look profesisonally done, I'd rather do my own nails then sit at the salon
I actually get quite a few compliments on my nails every week from random people
My nails are not very long, but do look nice.
Also the mavala nail plish does not seem to stain nails either :
I had some metalic black nail polish on my nails for 1 week (with no chipping at all too) and my nails arenot stained at all!
I also just tried the mavala nail polish remover and am happy with that.
I had a store brand one and it seemed "defective"..could barely remove dark shades, has to scrub at my nails almost..
Tried the Mavala nail polish, the regular one that looks green and I needed 1 cottom for each hand and super easy to remove black polish with "diamond glitter" in it..and this was with 2 coats black, 1 coat clear purple glitter and top coat... |

I'll take it. I'm so desperate I'll try anything. As far as the product listed above Mavala I think I read somewhere yesterday that you should avoid nail products with acetone and formaldehyde (sp).
I do have some shea butter and some EO's so I will give it a try as soon a I get the recipe. Thanks |

Ok.
Basic Recipe.
60 grams oil of choice choose the carrier based on what you feel will best suit your needs Some oils will take longer to soak in, Apricot kernel oil leaves I nice shine on the nails...but takes longer to soak. Grapeseed oil...soaks in much faster. Your choice.
30 grams Shea butter or 15 g Shea and 15 G cocoa butter which is what I used.
30 grams beeswax
10 grams castor oil
EO's are whatever scents you like.
Melt beeswax, butter and oils in a double boiler till melted...let cool for a bit and then add EOs don't boil it as it will not do nice things to the butters and is not necessary. Pour into a jar and let cool. It will be hard like a lip balm, and to use it just rub your hands or finger tips over it and then into your skin and nails. It worked really well for me. It's also wonderful on feet. I had nasty nasty heels and what not...not no more.
I made tons of little bomblets with different EO's and gave many away.
It took about 2 weeks of pampering my pinkies....and since then..they are long and and not breaking and snapping and splitting. I attribute that to the balm.
It's a nice aromatherapy treat during the day as well.
If it's too much hassle for you, I'd be happy to send you some. |
