I've been using an epilator pretty much since they came on the market. Up until now, I've always used the Braun brand, their top of the range model with all the attachments.
However, I decided to get a re-chargeable model because, apparently, putting a plug in a socket is way too much trouble for me!
I settled on the Philips Satinelle Massage Premium Epilator. It's quite basic and doesn't come with all the various head attachments that the Braun has. It does have a clip on "shield" thingy for epilating sensitive areas like under-arm and bikini area. It's very erganomically shaped, rather like a traditional shaver, so it's easy to hold. It does not have metal tweezers, rather it has a ceramic head that Philips claim is the "latest and greatest".
I'm giving this epilator a huge thumbs up - it's very efficient and rips out the shortest of hairs. I also don't find it as irritating as the Braun. The fact that it's cordless is very handy because the moment I spot a stray hair I can just grab the Philips and rip it out instead of having to find a power point and plug it in. It's also cheaper than the Braun. |

Keliu, thanks for the review. How long have you been epilating? Do you find it makes your hair grow back finer/sparser? |

Probably about 15-20 years. And yes, the hair does become much sparser - I barely get any hair under my arms now. It's a thousand times better than shaving and waxing - but I've never had laser hair removal so don't know how it compares to that. |

That sounds promising! I was thinking of getting a home IPL or laser device, but they're $$$$. |

They are expensive, plus they're not a magic bullet for hair removal like some people think they are - it's an ongoing treatment like any other hair removal system. But as I said earlier I've never actually tried a laser device.
The more I use the Philips device, the more I like it. |

How do you prevent ingrown hairs?
That is my one concern with an epilator, since I've gotten ingrowns from tweezering before. |

I agree, ingrown hairs are a problem - but isn't it the same for every method of hair removal? The device does come with one of those exfoliating gloves and the instructions say to use it regularly. So, yes exfoliation is the key - I've never tried one of those topical lotions that are supposed to prevent ingrown hairs though. |

I have been epilating for an eternity as well with my Emjoi. I can totally recommend Tend Skin to avoid ingrowns....especially with the awesome refillable rollerball applicator that they carry at Sephora. Love it!

If you tend to get ingrown hairs, please be careful of this and do some small test patches. I used this about 10 years ago, and it caused a serious problem of ingrown hairs. Even after I stopped using it, I continued to have problems.
Most people can tolerate it, but I wasn't able to. Yes, and Tend Skin will definitely help. |

Thanks, I will try a small area with Tend Skin. I tried threading a patch on my leg before, no aftercare, and practically every single hair came back ingrown! So hopefully the Tend Skin will help. |

I agree with this 100%. I have also been eplilating for around 20 years. |

Do you numb the skin before epilating? Tweezing already hurts, so ripping out multiple hairs at a time |

No I don't find it necessary to numb the skin. However, there is another Philips model that comes with some kind of "ice" brick thingy which I think you place on the skin. Not sure about this because I didn't check it out properly.
Also, I always epilate on dry skin - the instructions say to do it after a bath or shower when the skin is softer. I find this hurts more. It's also best to have the hairs really short, so it my be necessary to trim them first before epilating (particularly for bikini area). |

Well it's like waxing, you're pulling the hair out by the root so you don't get the immediate stubble like you do with shaving. Also, the hair growth is staggered, so not all the hair grows back at once. I've been using an epilator for so long that I get about a month hair free on my legs. |

I use my epilator about every other week and its really more of a touch up then needing to do the entire area.
I've never had a real issue with ingrown hairs. I do exfoliate with scrubs 2-3 a week though so I'm sure that helps.
I've never numbed the area first. When I first started I definitely felt it but it wasn't unbearable. Now I don't feel anything. |

The Tend Skin arrived today, so I applied it for the first time. As I was using it I thought, "I know that smell" - so checked out the ingredients:
Isopropyl Alcohol, Butylene Glycol, Acetyisalicylic Acid, Cyclomethicone, Glycerin, Water, Diglycerin, Polysorbate 80.
It was the smell of the Isopropyl Alcohol that I was so familiar with. I'm wondering if by adding a bit of Glycerin to that you would have a much cheaper option. |
