Why do sunscreens that contain high % of zinc oxide have so much oil? First of all, regardless of skin type, why the heck would a company put "oil" in sunscreen? Sunscreens, by nature, are very nasty and oily. Not to mention break out city.
Furthermore, why would sunscreen companies consider their sunscreen "moisturizing?" Okay, sunscreens are oily and I have very oily skin. So, why on earth would I want to purchase a moisturizing sunscreen?
It's tricky to find a good sunscreen. I think I've found one. It's SPF 30+++ with 5% zinc and 5% titanium dioxide. It's tinted and feels great. Matte finish. However, I'm concerned that summer is coming and since I've just done a session of laser resurfacing that I need something stronger.
Unfortunately, this is where I've looked for high % of zinc oxide sunscreens, but they all contain so much oil, even if it's "natural."
It also has been my experience that "natural" products break me out the most!
So, given the circumstances, I have narrowed it down to the following sunscreens that I will use, in addition to the one I love, which is called Minus-Sol (minus the sun). I also will provide comments of what I have thought of other sunscreens.
I need something that is NOT moisturizing, oil-free, contains more than 5% zinc and titanium, not greasy, matte finish, great texture.
The list:
* DIOR SPF 35- my mom uses this; it is too flowery smelling for me; plus, no zinc.
* CLARINS SPF 40- tried it at the mall, too strong in fragrance for my taste.
* SkinCeuticals sunscreens are far too oily for me. Expensive, ineffective, and overrated.
On the fence about:
Neutrogena
Does Neutrogena sponsor Allure or something? The editors of Allure magazine always recommend their Dry Touch sunscreens. They are too oily for me. I want to like their Baby SPF 60, which I have, but it does feel very oily to the touch.
The ones I want to try:
* Osmosis Shelter SPF 29
* Burnout Eco-Sensitive, Kids, Water
* Shiseido SPF 55+++
* Dermaquest Zinclear SPF 30
* Japanese Sunscreens- Biore or any other y'all can think of
* Obagi Rosaclear SPF 30
Are there any suggestions y'all can make?
Would Obagi Rosaclear be my best bet?
Thanks! |

Am I confused, or do you have 2 other sunscreen threads going as well as this one?
Editing to add: Nope, I'm not confused.

Why not try a powder sunscreen like SuprSun? There is definitely no oil in there!

SuprSun Active Ingredients: Micronized Titanium Dioxide 15%, Micronized Zinc Oxide 15%
Other Ingredients: Mica. Tinted Versions will also contain Iron Oxides
FunrSun Active Ingredients: Non-Micronized Titanium Dioxide 9%, Non-Micronized Zinc Oxide 9%

Great idea, Bethany! I also just saw the post about Shiseido SPF 60+++. I will have to try that one out as well.
Do you have oily skin, too? |

I just wanted to add that many of indie mineral makeup companies have powder mineral sunscreen available for reasonable costs. Most offer a sample size if you want to try it.
The one I am using is sheer Zinc from Silk Naturals but there is lots of other MMU that offer this type of product.
Keep in mind that you really need to use a lot if you are counting on this for full sun protection. (A dusting will not offer enough protection.) I wear a sunscreen product, MMU foundation (natural filters in there of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide also) and SN Sheer Zinc is a finishing product or another layer of protection. |

I am not sure where you live, but this is a sunscreen that I like and reviewed. Available in Canadian drugstores.

This would be good for oily skin. I agree I really dislike fragrance in sunscreen. The Shiseido SPF 50 (or 55 in the US) has a lot of fans, but I hated the flowerly smell.
I do like the Clarins eye cream with spf, but won't try the facial sunscreens due to fragrance. |

You can consider Elta MD Physical SPF41 with 9% zinc oxide and also has titanium dioxide. It is tinted (quite a fair shade) and is oil-free and paraben-free.
Good e-tailers for this are:

I have an oily nose, unfortunately. I used to have an entire oily face, but finally figured out that all the oily skin stuff I was using was actually overdrying my skin, and making everything even MORE oily! But once I stopped doing that, I reduced the oilfield to just my nose.
But I can't stand the feeling of stuff on my skin, which is why I like the powder.
But I do really like Melashade (just like the ZO Oclipse without the peptide)...it feels like nothing on, and I'll dust a little SuprSun over it to up the SPF up a bit.

Melashade SPF 30:Active Ingredients: Zinc oxide - 3.8%, Titanium dioxide - 10.7%.
Other Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclomethicone, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Methyl Methacrylate/Glycol Dimethacrylate Crosspolymer, Melanin, Tribehenin, Calcium Behenate, Sorbitan Isostearate Dimethicone, Alumina, PEG-10, Dimeticone Methicone and Iron Oxides.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
Bethany, I am a 2 on the Fizpatrick scale. Blonde, blue eyes, and fair. But, assuming I can reduce a little redness (which I think will be the case after my laser resurfacing result), with a beige tint.
Which SpurSun powder would be the best for me?
It'd be great if it'd provide a little color: to reduce redness and hide breakouts.
Thanks for your help! From one oily skin face lover to another! |

The Melashade looks good.
When I read the review, I was concerned that it was not good since it got 3/4 stars. However, the poster didn't give in 4/4 stars since she said that it was great for all skin types, except the very dry. Music to my ears.
Since Obagi's sunscreens can be so oily, I feel safe in ordering the Melashade and SpurSun.
Hopefully, I will not have breakout woes caused by sunscreen. |

I think you would like it. It has higher zinc oxide than ZO sunscreen and the shade is lighter. I think the Melashade might not provide enough protection now that summer sun is increasing. |

Does EltaMD provide samples of their sunscreen?
Is the EltaMD really thick and greasy?
It's so expensive to find the right sunscreen with all the facets. |

Bethany, have you been able to try the EltaMD sunscreen? I ordered over a week ago and still haven't received it. I even paid more for faster shipping. They are SLOW!
I am at my wits end right now. I have been using other sunscreens: oil-free Neutrogena, Vanicream, Skin Medica samples, etc. and they all stink! They are TEARING up my screen. I am oily as all get out and I am getting huge, deep breakouts. Wonderful way to see my new results of laser resurfacing. It is beyond frustrating.
EltaMD HAS to work for me.
I hope you love your Elta! Fingers crossed it works. |

Bethany,
Sorry about your sunscreen woes.
Meanwhile, I'm breaking out like the plague!
Funny how NEITHER of us have our EltaMD!
Whoever gets it, let's tell each other what we think when we get it...if we get it. |

I tried the Osmosis sunscreen and found it a bit drying on the skin after consecutive days of use, and now alternate it with Devita (I like it as a sunscreen but cannot utilize it every day). You might want to give the Osmosis a try with your oily skin as it might be perfect for your skintype to use on a daily basis. |

So it turns out that I only THOUGHT I ordered the Elta MD Physical Sunscreen. Instead I actually ordered a sample and tried it today.
It is fairly lightly tinted, but it is still a tad too dark for my corpse flesh...not too bad, but you can see a line of beige vs. non-beige (my skin) right at my hairline.
The texture is very light, and definitely oil-free...it dried very quickly and left a matte feeling on my face. Unfortunately, it is actually TOO dry for me...it made the skin under my eyes and on the backs of my hands look wrinkled. But I am sure this could be remedied with some moisturizer applied first.
I will not be ordering this, but think that it will be excellent for anyone with oily skin. |

I'm surprised that you amazingly talented DIYers aren't making your own. A jar of desitin and a uva/uvb blocker = cheap win, I would think! |

That's really not going to meet my needs from a texture standpoint, lol. |

I used to be big on japanese sunscreens before going more natural. they are not oily. i know what you mean about oily, white sunscreens, it is gross and i can only use those when i am at the beach.
recently, i find myself back to using sunkiller. they have a new formula, the BB cream version and i love it. it does double as a foundation and looks and feels amazing. i recall reading that it uses zinc and another chemical sunscreen. i just ordered 3 more bottles online for my mothers and aunt.
sunkiller also came out with an all physical sunscreen, i think they call it the baby version. i ordered it off ebay and am awaiting for arrival and will update then. |
