My skin is in very bad shape. Vitamin C Serum is about the only thing I can afford right now to keep myself looking somewhat decent! I've read it tightens and makes skin look younger.

So, who has had GREAT results with a vitamin c serum? Made your face look years younger? Got rid of your age spots? Tightened your skin?

What brand do you use? How long does it last? How much does it cost? I'm a newbie to skincare- all I've ever used is soap on my face.

I'm also a bit afraid of all I've heard about it falling apart or something in the mail? Like by the time you open it and put it on your face it will be bad and cause more problems than help? So I'm trying to avoid that!!! If you use a brand where you dont encounter that situation, please share!

Thanks!

You might want to wander over to the Skincare Tools and DIY forum.

KassyA is the queen of DIY Vit C serums, and I have no doubt she can help you whip up a very economical one (as in WAY cheaper than a formulated version). Many people here swear by her Vit C recipes.

I have probably suggested this to you before, but facial exercise is awesome for sagging. And $10 for the download of Ageless if You Dare was one of the best $10 I EVER spent.

Here is the link to the support thread for Ageless:

Aww sweetie. I have been using vitamin C since January this year, but I have used so many other products that is hard for me to tell if it has helped in anything at all. I have used Rx vitamin C and currently Vivier Kine C. Both remained the same color as when I first opened them.

While I can say I haven't had 'great' results from vitamin C, I did have some minor reduction in hyperpigmentation. Aside from that I haven't noticed any other changes in my skin but I continue to use it as a preventative rather than corrective measure.

You can buy Vitamin C at various price points but one of the more popular ones is Skinceuticals CE Ferulic. However that is pretty pricey at $125+. You can, however, buy mini samples from ebay that equate to about the same amount as the full retail size (1 oz) for about $40-$45. Additionally, there is a knock-off brand that also sells for about $40-$50. There are also other brands that people here like including Obagi and Cellex C etc.

What you referred to as 'falling apart' is oxidation of the vitamin C and once it does so, it not only is not beneficial (it loses antioxidant qualities), it becomes detrimental to your skin (turns pro-oxidant). As it oxidizes becomes reddish brown. 'Fresh' serum is clear to a light amber. Anything beyond that should be tossed.

As someone mentioned above, you can make your own serums for much cheaper and there are many threads devoted to that in the DIY forum.

its_kristy, how much (quantity) of the skinceuticals ce ferulic is to be used dailyafter washing your face? And what's the best way to apply it i.e. rub it in your palm and then your face or use an applicator?

I am currently using the sample size and I use a full dropper on my face. If you have the retail size bottle, I think it says 4-5 drops. My technique isn't very pretty--I squeeze directly onto my face and rub in with fingertips. The serum is pretty runny (not quite as viscous as water but pretty close) so it's hard to apply to fingers or hands and then to face. I wouldn't squirt into your palm because not only is it diffcult to apply product with the palm of your hand, but alot of it would be wasted/absorbed in the palm of your hand. Any excess I have left on my fingers I rub onto the back of my hand, where alot of people get hyperpigmentation when they are older. As far as an applicator goes, I have never tried it but given how expensive the stuff is, I'm not interested in using an applicator because some of it would be wasted in the applicator (assuming it's some sort of absorbant applicator).

While some people do get some results from Vit C, I think of it as more of preventative product.

THank you. Thats awesome although it doesn't list the ingredients on the website. I thought skinceuticals owned the patent and no one else could sell.

I'm not sure if they do or not but if they do, it would be a formulation with specific ingredients and percentages since I don't think any of the individual ingredients themselves were developed and patented by Skinceuticals. While the ingredients of Skinceuticals prodcuts are publicly listed, the concentration of all of them are not so I doubt the knock-off brand contains the same concentration, as they would have to make an educated guess. So unless the formulation is exactly the same, I don't think it would be patent infringement.

I agree you can purchase all the individual ingredients at DIY sites and distilled water at any grocery store and those can't be patented! It's their specific formula that they can patent, or the method of formulating.

If you are looking for a cheap pre-made Vitamin C serum, Sally's Beauty Supply makes one called Beyond Belief. $8.49 for 2 ounces. I have never used it myself.

There is a copyright symbol after the C, E Ferulic name. Hmm. It does look like skinceuticals is owned by the L'oreal organization. What company don't they own anymore.
