I went for a very long overdue facial on the weekend and my esthetician said that my skin was thickening. I haven't had a facial in close to 5yrs, but I was always told that I had good skin, so this came as kind of a shock to me. I was also told that my pores were becoming enlarged, which I have been noticing, but having someone actually point these things out to me is kind of making me freak out a bit. Because I've only ever really heard of skin thinning as you age, I'm not quite sure what to do about thickening skin. I'm 39yo, with semi-oily skin. Does anyone have any suggestions about what could help me? TIA. |

Ya, at first I was thinking that it was a good thing too, but then she told me that sun damage can cause skin to thicken. Other than the enlarged pores, my skin doesn't look sun damaged, but I guess it is. I have pale skin that can tan, so even though I do wear sunsceen now, unfortunately I did a lot of tanning in my teens. I just don't want it to get worse - and noticeable. |

As we age the Stratum Corneum (the outer layer of the skin) thickens while the the epidermis and dermis thin and suffer a decrease in oil gland activity. In other words it means the dead layers are building up and causing your skin to be thicker, rougher, more prone to wrinkles and sagging due to the lower dermis breaking down and the structure weakening.
Totally reversible This is what retin-a does best!! Do a google search on retin-a!! Google Nia24 too - it's amazing for reversing this kind of damage too and works a perfect pair with retin-a!! If you don't want to go the retin-a route the nest best would be glycolic - MD Forte works for me!! |

I agree with sunlit's suggestions. You should be able to remedy your skin issues with Retin-A and/or AHA use. |
