I have been religiously using physical sunscreen for at least last 5-6 years. But recently all of sudden quite a few sunspots appeared on my face. I have been experimenting different physical sunscreens in the past 6 months. I am wondering whether it is because some of them just didn't do their job. But I have to know how long it takes sunspot to form and appear to the surface in order to find out which one is not working.
In the past 6 months, I tried: 302 ointment ( for 3-4 months), Sunshield SPF 28 from Mychelle (for 3 weeks during a trip), Devita Ultrasolar 50 (recent 3 weeks). Anyone used any of the above had the same experience? |

My understanding is that sun spots result from damage YEARS ago. As in exposure during teens and twenties. |

Really? I did some serious peeling about 3 years ago and it removed all of marks on my face. So I thought whatever appeared now are results from recent sun exposure. Am I wrong? |

I have heard and read that the majority of sun-damage takes place from birth to 20, even those "cute" freckles on kids are actually sun-damage. I know we can still sustain sun-damage/hyperpigmentation after that age, that's why we need to religiously use sun screen. |

I think that if you have just experienced these spots while trialing some different sunscreens one of the sunscreens was not protecting you enough. I know for myself when I use a sunscreen that doesn't protect my skin enough, I will get pigmented spots showing up right away. |

I agree with what you say on that Riley! I just find it amazing that what we did running around in the sun while young can come bite us in the butt later in life! ![Shock](images/smiles/shock.gif) |

Riley--do you think this is new damage/sunspots, or reactivation of previous damage that was suppressed by Obagi and sunscreen? |

When it happened to me, it was new spots. I only have 3 sunspots that continue to come back when I stop Obagi. The rest of my face has no pigmentation any longer after doing so many cycles of Nu Derm. So, for myself, if I use a sunscreen that isn't working for me, I know immediately, as I will get freckles/sunspots in new areas. |

RileyGirl,
How long does it take for your new spots to appear when you are not using the right sunscreen? I am trying to decide which sunscreen I used in the past 6 months I should avoid?
Thanks! |

Hi, htian21. For me, it is a matter of days - unfortunately! But, fortunately I haven't had that happen after I started using physical sunscreens only on my face. It was when I used the chemical sunscreens the spots would just show up. Good luck finding the culprit. Sunscreens are just so tricky and individual. |
