diacneal on my skin to get the maximum benefits it has to offer. Why is everyone recommending to apply such a small amount? I feel like it won't do anything.

as long as it spreads onto the whole area you are trying to put it on , it should be enough. if you find it is not getting the whole area then apply a little more. You usually don't need to slather stuff on to be effective though.

use a magnifying glass on your "pea size" and you should do fine Very Happy

I always get upset when a small size is suggested. I feel like I'm doing something wrong when I can't get the applying proportions to fit my face. If I use them, it feels as if they have evaporated by the time half of my face has been covered.

The idea behind the "pea sized" recommendation is that it stops people over-applying the retinoid, thus reducing the chances of problems and helping with compliance. Over-application doesn't offer any more benefits and can seriously irritate skin. Applying more won't make your cells turn over any faster. Your acne or wrinkles won't disappear any faster either. At best it will just waste product. At worst it will cause you irritation.

You should be applying enough to *very* lightly go over all areas you're treating. Essentially, once the product is applied you shouldn't be able to feel the product on your skin.

If your face is larger than average (like mine, being a 6'4", in-proportion male), then you obviously need to use a little more. Much the same as with sunscreens where the recommended amount is 1/4 teaspoon for your face alone. If your face is very small you may need a little less.

Isn't this a cleanser? A pea sized amount doesn't sound like much to cleanse the face.

If the solution is being washed off the face, I wouldn't think that using more would be harmful - except to your wallet!

Their website says this:

Avene Diacneal is a skin care treatment that is getting really good reviews online. It is a soap free skin cleansing gel that can be used for treating acne or other skin blemishes and is even safe to use in conjunction with other anti-acne treatments.

http://avenediacneal.com/

It's contains 6% Glycolic Acid and also Retinaldehyde which is a milder form of Retinol - it's not a prescription strength Retin-A (with which you do have to use a pea sized amount).

Hmm... i'm quite sure the TS was referring to the retinoid here: http://www.amazon.com/Av%C3%A8ne-Diacneal-30-Ml/dp/B0035N65SA

Although they do have a cleanser in the same line that has no retinol/retinaldehyde listed: http://www.amazon.com/Avene-Diacneal-Soap-free-cleanser-6-76-Ounce/dp/B002D48R1U/ref=pd_sbs_bt_3

I have used the Diacneal (retinoid) before, and while it is OTC, i do consider it to be rather strong. From what i gather, it is because of the synergistic effect of the retinaldehyde and the glycolic acid.

This is about all i can find at the moment:

A pea size rarely is enough product for me. Maybe because my skin tends to be dry that small amound doesn't give me good coverage. I use about 2x pea size.

I think you make an excellent point marci, it does depend on individual skin type. I have very normal skin and I had a bad habit(for me personally) of thinking one pump no that can't possibly be enough so out came 2 pumps.... I would be spreading the product down onto my neck and chest and still find that I ended up blotting excess off with a tissue! Rolling Eyes So for my skin I had to learn to cut it back to the recommended amount. Smile
