Hi,
I am a 43 yo male who is looking to improve the quality of his skin. I have a few main issues:
Some pock marks from acne in early life
Slightly blotchy skin, I suspect from too much alcohol!
My skin is also starting to go a bit wrinkly.
What are the best type of products I should be using?
Thanks

Hi Pete,
Congrats on the move to improve your skin.
Have you looked and the any of the dedicated skin kits on the EDS site? I know that Decleor have a great one - Elemis also has a dedicated mens kitwww.timetospa.com.
One way to greatly improve your skin and it costs nothing, drink lots of water (and cut down on the alchol).
Hope you get lots of advice.
Merry Christmas

hi pete, kudos to you for starting to think about your skin!
i think it sounds like your quite a beginner (we all have to start somewhere), so i think you first have to know the basic products you should be thinking of, from there you can add:
cleanser, to wash your face (no body soap allowed!!) 2ce a day
toner, to complete the cleansing routine, usually in a spray or to be applied w. a cotton pad
moisturizer, to keep your skin hydrated and less wrinkly - the moisturizer can have sunscreen/spf, or the sunscreen can be another layer
eye cream, to keep those eyes happy+bright
sunscreen (unless it's in your moisturizer)
next, i would suggest figuring out what kind of skin you have, dry (tight+stretched-feeling), oily (no explaination needed), combination (oily+dry), normal (perfectly balanced) or sensitive (gets irritated + reddens easily).
based on that you can start looking for the above basics based on your skin type. also, since you've decided already what some of your main concerns are, you can look for various products that will help with those concerns.
another thing you might think about is, natural/organic or non-natural? that will really help you narrow down your search for products.
many skincare lines do have products geared specifically towards men, so those are generally a good way to start out, to get a feel for what might or might not work. for example decleor or jurlique...both of which are available on EDS.
use some common sense when making decisions, for example, if you have dry skin, don't choose a foaming cleanser - it'll dry you out more.
later, once you've gotten the hang of things, i would suggest incorporating an exfoliant (something that will remove layers of dead skin) and a mask.
i would also suggest going to a reputable spa and seeing if you can get a skin consultation or even a facial. that is the easiest way of getting some advice from a professional. they'll also beable to tell you what kind of skin you have. i'm sure that if you tell us where abouts you're from, people will have some suggestions as to good spas to check out.
keep in mind that picking skincare is a somewhat long + arduous task, you'll have to try things to find what's just right for you, so give it time.

Apart from a nice cleanser and moisturiser/SPF I would also highly recommend a vitamin C serum (shold help with marks and blotchiness) and a good exfoliant. I really like Dermalogica Microfoliant - gentle powder exfoliant you can use on a daily basis. The Microfoliant also has some skin brightening ingredients that should help with the marks/blotchiness as well. Then follow that with a vit C serum and some moisturiser/SPF.
Any idea what type of skin you have? Dry? Oily? Combination? Knowing that we should be able to suggest some specific products... |

My wife reckons I have normal skin. I always thought it was oily but she says not. |

Hmmm, perhaps it would be best if you got a facial and got a beautician to have a look at your skin and figure out if it's oily or normal then. If it's oily then you could use something along the lines of Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser as the cleanser, and use their (or any other brand's) lighter moisturisers instead of creams. It might be worth looking into one of the starting kits which have about 4 or 5 products in trial sizes for a decent price. I'm definitely standing by the vitamin C serum recommendation though! |
