My girlfriend who is the same age as me, 55, dry skin like me also, tried a sample of la Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Cream. She said after using it her skin felt like velvet. Its $300 for 1.7 oz. What does anyone know about this stuff? I've been telling her about products with argireline because she has some deep lines between her eyebrows and on her forehead but she's capable of convincing herself to spend the $$$$$. I say wait and see what the EDS ladies have to say. So? What say you, oh learned ones? |

Having had the honour to try almost the entire LP range of products, I would have to say that the luxe cream is only average at best and your skin will indeed feel instantly soft and very smooth due to the generous amounts of silicones in it.
If one were seriously hoping to see visible results, then I wouldn't recommend this at all, especially at that jaw-dropping price. Then again, I've heard many customers (used to work for LP, no way would I have spent that kind of $$!) raving about how it lents the skin a certain glow. I'm highly suspicious about where that so-called glow came from. If you smear some of the cream onto your hand and look at it under bright lights, you'll see some very fine gold shimmer. I've always attributed that *glow* to those shiny particles whenever I have the cream on. It is also highly fragranced with a scent that I grew to dislike (perhaps due to my easy access to the product). I don't know if working for the brand has shattered some dearly harboured illusions of LP which of course led to an early disenchantment with most of their products or truly because my expectations were simply too high but I can frankly say that those prices do not justify the products' lack of performance and cheap plastic packaging (save for a couple of glass jars). Babor makes some really excellent products, maybe she could try them instead. Also, I've had the chance to try some very nice caviar cream fromwww.pricklyapple.com at a much more reasonable price and the product is effective, unfortunately they do not ship out of the U.S so getting it can be a hassle (at least for me).
Hope this helps some and I really didnt mean to sound discouraging but I just hate the thought of your friend blowing $300 just to attain temporary results. If she's still keen on it though, perhaps she should try strawberrynet.com for more competitive pricing. I've always had reliable service from the site. |

I have tried this cream (had high expectations too) but I have to agree with Fenn. I can't recall the ingredient list but the cream must be loaded with silicones because my skin felt super smooth (silicones) but it broke out with tiny little red bumps after a few days of using it (which is what tends to happen to me with products that have a high silicone content). I actually did like the smell, although I admit that it is fairly strong and may not be liked by others.
Fenn - I'm toying with the idea of buying the LP loose powder and caviar foundation. I'd really appreciate your feedback on those - particularly the powder. TIA |

Hi Mabsy,
I really do think that the caviar foundation is the saving grace of LP. =p The colour range still doesn't quite cut it though, except maybe for the cool/pink toned skins. The texture is wonderfully silky and blends with hardly any work at all. I also like the accompanying concealor which is housed in the cap, emollient enough for dry under-eye area and pigmented enough to cover dark circles nicely. However, because the foundation is so creamy feeling, some might think it's too heavy but it really isn't. It's of course very different in feel to say MUFE's face and body which I love to death for it's gel/water consistency.
The loose powder is also quite lovely. Very fine and non-chalky looking. Once again, the colour selection leaves much to be desired. For the foundation, the warm shades are way too dark and murky looking while the pale shades are very pink. I could never find a match for my light but warm skin tone.
Have you tried the new Dior's fdtn? It is very, very nice!
HTH! |

Thanks Fenn! I was secretly hoping that you'd tell me that I shouldn't bother with the foundation... I must go in and see if there's a good shade match for me, I need a very pale yellow based foundation I guess. I haven't tried CD's foundation as yet. Anything with very light coverage? |

Lol, okie, how bout if I say that the coverage of the LP is more medium-full and wouldn't be something you'd like if you're going for the natural look?
In all honesty, I couldn't find a match for my skin and like yourself, I'm always looking for the lightest yello-based shade. I found LM's Porcelain Ivory to be one of the palest yellow shades I've ever seen. MAC's colour seem a bit peachy to me, even their yellow toned ones. Also seem to oxidise very fast and turn darker on me. Stila's 10watts in their liquid is nice but could be a tad paler. CD has one called diorlight which is very thin in texture and coverage so that's something you might look into. Also, their shade 100 is nicely yellow and quite light, again I would wish for it to be as pale as their powder foundation in the same number. Oh and I read recently that Givenchy came out with a new liquid that's very smooth and comes in a whooping 14 shades too. Have fun at the mall and do share if you happen to spot any new goodies at the counters. I'm rather obsessed in my quest for the perfect foundation myself.
p/s How are you liking the RyF? What was the shipping like? I'm dying dying to order but fear the monstrous shipping charges that can sometimes occur. TIA!! |

Bingo! Thank you - that helped! I shall take myself to the shopies tomorrow night (although I'm not sure if it's such a good idea with all the people doing last minute shopping and all...) and see what I can come up with. I don't really need a foundation at the moment... but you know how it is...
Re: RyF shipping, it was very reasonable. *searches for shipping quote from Liz* Okie, anything up to a pound to Australia was supposed to be $11.20. Two pounds would be $16.40.
**Edited to add: That I though I actually paid less than that. Just checked out my cc statement and it turns out I only got charged $4 for shipping (got trial size ambrosia and trial sized scrub). Not sure if that's the usual charge though (but thank you Liz! ). |

I've just bought the caviar luxe face cream and caviar foundation - after a month on La Mer (which I found too dry). The first day was awful. The cream smells horrible. And maybe I didn't apply the foundation correctly. But day two. Moisturiser feels like it's working and the foundation is much better. So maybe my skin is just getting used to it? Still find the smell a little cloying. What on earth is that? |
