Hello!
I was reading about Dressing your Truth program, available for purchase via the internet. It sounded interesting - the 4 types of beauty and providing info about how to 'dress' for them.
I wondered if anyone is familiar with this program and could share your experience/thoughts?
Cheers |

I hadn't heard of it, so went and checked out the website. My first reaction was that this would be good for someone who had very little experience in stylish dressing and is unsure how to change that.
I did find it alarming that they grouped skin types right along with personality types (which I believe is how they are assigning beauty type) and were selling skin care product based on that...just because you have a certain personality doesn't mean your skin is more or less dry! But it can definitely shape your clothing choices.
Interestingly, I was pretty confident in the Type they would put me in based on their descriptions, and I would NEVER pick the outfit the woman was wearing in the video. But most of the women in the Before and After gallery did look better (even though they had restyled themselves).
But I found the below review on Amazon which was quite interesting:

Yes, I too wondered just how much one would have to spend to get the entire 'answer'. I am hesitant when I see the skin care products as well.
I absolutely MUST get out of my 'blue jeans and t-shirt' habit, but don't know where to go from here and when I saw the site I thought it might help...though if one nees to spend over $200 to get all the information I am not sure I am prepared to do that.
Thanks for your thoughts Bethany! Helps to center me and rein in the initial 'ohh I must have this' impulse! |

mymax,
You can easily change up jeans with a little dressier top and nice shoes, in cooler weather a nice jacket (blazer type) over can make jeans much less casual. I am a jeans girl all the way! LOL |

LOL. I am a jeans girl all the way, too, and I do what you do DM. However, my son is trying to get me out of my jeans and into "dressier" clothes.
Myamax, have you thought about going in to one of the higher end stores and getting a personal shopper? I have heard that can really help a person when they really don't know where to go with the clothes. Either that or possibly just finding some looks you like in magazines and seeing if the "fit" your personality? |

It's funny Riley being 9 $@&*%# years older I couldn't wear pants much less jeans to school until 10th grade! Then dress clothes for work after. Had the 4 kids in 8 years so maternity clothes or jeans and T shirts. Then back to work and no jeans. Now not working out in the world I only dress when the occasion requires it, otherwise jeans are it! |

Like you guys I love jeans, love the ease and simplicity but I love variety. With summer I haven't had jeans on in probably four months. Capris of all colors, bermuda shorts, little skirts, flowy dresses. I like Jeans but I love to dress too. I don't even like to shop all that much but I can spot what I like in a minute. I make a point to find clothes to perk up what I already own, to get something fabulous at a good price... It feels good to put together something you aready have with a new piece and ta da - you have a brand new outfit. Love it I'm a sucker for a cute outfit. jewelry, shoes, new top, the 'odd, unique' skirt.... sigh again
I bet you girls save a lot of $$$$ sticking with the jeans and tops. sigh! Look out Riley You might get addicted. |

Try working at home and basically being a hermit! I live in black yoga pants and t-shirts, and never get dressed up anymore unless I am going to visit a client (like Wed-Fri this week!)
But I will say that Myamax got me thinking about my wardrobe after her post, and once I lose the rest of this weight I am indeed going on a shopping spree! But i think I need to more clearly define my style before doing so.
Until then, I just purchased another pair of my favorite Spanx Bod-A-Bing black pants (there is a new fit out since July) and I will pick up some better fitting tops for fall.
And in the meantime, I can start thinking about what style of clothing I want to buy in the future.
P.S....Sis, I do not save money by just wearing yoga pants and T-shirts, because I spend it on cats and antique jewelry! We all have our passions, lol. |

After giving this some more thought, I think DarkMoon is right in that a nice top and blazer etc. can dress up jeans quite nicely. I don't have anywhere to go that I need to be 'dressed up' (I am a stay-at-home mom) but I am feeling so very frumpy these days...however swapping out my t-shirts for some sort of nicer top might just do the trick.
Although I am not a great shopper and don't really know what 'works' the best for me. I can always tell what color looks great, but fall a bit short on the 'style' part of it. A personal shopper sounds like it might be a good idea too!
My last trip to the USA (I am in Canada) I got to experience the Ann Talyor store and saw a few things I liked, and picked up 2 nice summer sleeveless tops (along with 4 t-shirts!) I have been waiting to see what the fall line-up brings as it's starting to come to the stores now. I was hoping the Dressing Your Truth or something like it would make it easier to shop by knowing what styles suited me (and take away that remaining 6lbs of baby weight...though my baby is 1yr old already!) |

I started working from home and got into the "frumpy mode". This mode was also doing something to my overall attitude so I decided to do a change. Before, I would run into town in my sweats. I now put on my jeans with a cute tee along with a 3/4 sleeve light weight jacket and slather on a bunch of sterling silver jewelry and a nice pair of sandals. It really has made a huge difference all around. I am a sucker for SS jewelry, mostly southwestern, and jackets. I will never stop wearing denim, EVER! My enormous collection of jewelry and jackets though is getting a bit out of hand. Glad my HB doesn't have a clue.
My favorite store for clothes is Coldwater Creek, they love seeing me come thru the door. |

Love to see that jewelry collection! Bethany's too. I've got quite a bit but it's the shoes that win for me. (embarrassing). |

When I get back in town I'll post some pics in a private album webshots on webshots and send you a link.
To give you a few hints, I am into monograms (who cares if they aren't mine, lol), intaglios, european cut diamonds, cognac diamonds, and deco jewelry in general.
And unfortunately, I have to purge periodically to support the habit, sigh. |

Havent read the book but this is my observation:
Wearing stretchy clothes all day only lets you eat and become lazy AFA your body's appearance.
Try wearing something non-stretchy like jeans with a zipper, skirt or shorts and see if it doesnt force you to •not• eat til you are uncomfortable! Muffin tops and wheat bellies become oh-so-obvious that way and I curtail it better when I can FEEL it! Just my 2˘ |

I agree Fawnie!
I would also suggest reading the book Color Me Beautiful. It's an old book you can get from the library. They have updated versions, but I like the version from the '80's. Knowing what colors flatter me has cut down on shopping time and saved me money. I have a small wardrobe, but I feel good about the clothes that I own. |

If I had the money, I'd have a consultation with Jennifer Butler. She goes beyond the four seasons of color and deals with style and personality, body shape, hair, etc.
A lot of these before and afters seem over the top until you realize that it fits their outgoing personalities. The more subdued looks would fit my personality. At least I think so. Jennifer might say otherwise.
Now that I've discovered all the youtube videos, I plan to see what I can learn.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0hllgpKndA |

I've just spent the past two hours watching a lot of Jennifer Butler's videos and looking at her website. I am going to take the essence test which is only $1.99 and then I am seriously thinking about doing the $175 email consultation, Design Your Style Online. It sounds like you get a lot of stuff. It might be a better value in terms of personally focused on me instead of paying $50 for her book, looking at the sample pages.http://jenniferbutlercolor.com/store/
Have a look at her before and after photos of both men and women. |

Years after wearing yoga pants daily, I 100% agree with this! |

Went to Jennifer Butler's guest event and met several of her clients who gushed about how their lives were changed, not just their wardrobes. Some of them did their own before and after modeling for us and the changes were quite amazing. Nothing to do with buying expensive clothes. I loved her spiritual energy as well. Watch the video at the bottom of her home page.
So I will bite the bullet and shell out big bucks for a private color and style consultation. I hate shopping and I hate wasting money on clothes I never wear. Read the FAQs for more reasons: http://jenniferbutlercolor.com/services/faq/
Maybe I'll get a new job and a new man as a result! |

I would love to hear what you think after the consultation. I liked the look on her videos, but the ones I saw were all were wearing similar colors (fall-type colors in rust and green). I wonder if those are her standard go-to colors or if jewel tones or pastels get recommended too. Might be that I just didn't watch enough youtubes!
Good for you to do something for yourself! |

When I first walked into her seminar I was disappointed because I wondered the same thing. Most of the population are Autumn types in terms of their coloring so I'm guessing that's why she chose that series to show. It also has to do with "essence" and personality. I spent $1.99 to take the Essence test and it confirmed my belief that I was a Spring, but then I was an equal amount of the other seasons but half the score of the Spring answers. I think that is where Jennifer's expertise comes into play, to help integrate those facets.
There are very few Springs in the population at large with a few more Winters. There was one woman who looked a lot like me in coloring and I absolutely loved everything she was wearing.
Jennifer breaks these categories down into sub-categories. I think she said there are 64. Jennifer is a Dramatic Winter. The Autumn types varied from wearing lots of beads and Indian inspired fabrics with lots of texture to tailored outfits in mustard/rust/green to smooth, comfortable yoga drapey outfits. Texture depends on hair. The curlier your hair is the more texture you can layer on.
Seems rather complicated but then it is more personalized than the Four Seasons approach.
Here are some tips:
Your neckline should echo your face shape -- long or oval face wear a V neck, square face wear a square or straight neckline, round face a scoop or crew neck.
If you have a large head and large features, you can wear large dramatic jewelry and fabric prints. If you have a small head with small, even features, you'd go smaller. If you have a long neck and a long or oval face, you can wear dangling earrings and necklaces that dangle down to echo the oval/length of your face. If you have a round or square face you follow those lines. It's about making fashion your own personal statement rather than what Vogue wants you to wear.
Wear your hair color for your belt, bag and shoes.
She gives you your Power colors to wear for business or when you need a boost, and your (forget what they are called) relationship colors to draw people to you. They tend to reflect your complexion, which is a combo of two colors, like gold and rose, for example, or nude and purple. Power color is based on your eyes but a very specific facet which I couldn't quite see in my own eyes because I didn't know what to look for.
You can still incorporate trends into your style but sometimes you will not buy anything that season if it doesn't suit you.
I am fairly confident of my colors, just need fine tuning. It's style where I need the help. Not sure what looks not just good, but great. |
