As was suggested on another forum, you can mix Retin A with Azelaic Acid Cream (Azelex/Skinoren/Finacea) and apply them together to enhance results. Apparently Azelaic acid works well for correcting uneven skin pigmentiation as well as having anti-inflammatory and anti-keratinizing action which helps enhance Retin A efficacy/penetration while reducing irritation associated with tretinoin therapy.
Here is a study demonstrating the results of combined tretinoin & azelaic acid treatment for melasma:

Interesting, I have both and normally use the retin a gel at night and the Azelaic Acid Cream in the morning. Never thought to mix them before. Perhaps I will try this on a small test patch on my arm tonight!
I have thought that my retin a doesn't work so well because I have hyperkeratination which stops the product penetrating so perhaps this might be useful. |

Hi Pandora,
I also have both products, so will give it a trial run. So far I've been using Retin A with Obagi Blender but want to see how this regime compares. If you do try it, please let me know how you get on and I'll do the same.

Hi, but i thin retin A is better to use alone, so it can works best. If you will use others, please use it after the A retin absorb completely, at least 5m. |

I've been mixing Tazorac with Skinoren for over a year now, mainly out of sheer laziness It works fine. I remember a derm used to give me a mixture of Retin A, Skinoren and HQ for sun spots and such, and he said the Retin A + Skinoren combo helps with HQ penetration. So I'm guessing even without the HQ the combination of the other 2 should still be good right? |

I would imagine so because apparently 20% azelaic acid is comparable to 2% HQ in terms of reducing melasma.
Yesterday, I actually applied the azelaic acid followed by Retin A/Blender. Talk about a one, two, three punch! Skin looks smoother and clearer today but very peely and is feeling a bit sensitive. |
