I've been using this powder everyday for nearly a month now, so I finally feel "qualified" to share my experience here.
Since about last summer I've been struggling with very red, sensitive, breakout-prone, over-40 skin. It was so irritated that it actually hurt to wear makeup (liquid, cream, powder, "natural," you name it...it was all painful). Thanks in a large part to many of you on this forum, my skin is getting much better. "Less is Best" is making my face very happy these days. In my quest for minimalism I found DermaDust powder.
What is it: A loose powder with just three ingredients - sulfur, zinc oxide, and sodium chloride (salt)
I apply it anywhere I have irritation or breakouts (using a soft powder brush for large areas like my cheeks, or my clean fingertip for direct application on pimples). Most of the chapped, sunburned feeling I was experiencing went away within two days (using the powder in the am and pm). It seemed too good to be true, so that's why I waited to write...to make sure it was the powder and not just a fluke. Well, it's still working at week four.
Color: light yellow, but it's sheer so it's not noticeable on me - but I'm a whitie, not sure if it would show on darker complexions.
Texture: very fine, dense, loose
Scent: you do not want to breathe this stuff...it will irritate you nose & throat. But I'd say it's kind of a salty smell. I only smell the sulfur if I accidentally get my face wet after I've just applied the powder.
Packaging: looks like a mineral makeup sample jar without the sifter.
Feel on the skin: burns a little upon application (just for a minute or two), can be drying if I use too much...for me a light hand is best. Applying to an open acne spot was uncomfortable and probably did more harm than good.
Cost: $5.99 USD for 6 grams
I found this on eBay while doing a specific search for Zinc and Sulfur.
Overall: For help with my rosacea symptoms I would give DermaDust an A. For help with pimples, I'd give it about a B/B-. In general, I am very pleased with this powder. I hope it can work for you, too.
NOTE: I just searched eBay today and DermaDust didn't come up. I'll try emailing to see where else it's being sold. |

How do you treat Rosacea? What skin care products do you use? I believe I've got Rosacea as my skin is very red and embarrassing. I don't know how to cure it. Can you give my some advice? |

Hi Lily,
Sorry to hear you think you may have rosacea. Hopefully you can get to a doctor to make sure that's what it really is and get a prescription if needed. Sadly, as far as I know, there is no "cure" for rosacea but there are lots of different avenues you can explore to alleviate your symptoms.
Here are some bits of advice I've picked up along the way from different online forums:
Avoid eating spicy foods including cinnamon
Avoid drinking alcohol
Avoid heat/steam/hot water
Avoid any harsh detergents, acids, manual exfoliants
Topical zinc and sulfur creams are often recommended, but it's hard to find them without a bunch of added chemicals.
Oat beta glucan gel is very soothing. I buy it online from Garden of Wisdom. I use it immediately after the shower and it feels so good. I apply it to my face all by itself, and usually mix about 1/2 and 1/2 with hempseed oil for my body lotion.
I'm still looking forward to finding a cleanser that doesn't irritate/aggravate. What I'm using now is hempseed oil mixed with polysorbate 20 (about 90% oil to 10% polysorbate). All the polysorbate does is make so the oil will rinse off. Some people say that you shouldn't use oil if you have rosacea. I don't know if that's true for me...we're all different, that's for sure.
To cover up the redness, those green based mineral concealers really do work. The hard part is finding one that doesn't irritate your skin. The one I like the best is Breeze Minerals Green Corrector. Use a very light hand when applying though, because it's easy to overdo it and end up looking like Frankenstein if you're not careful.
Good luck, Lily. If you find anything that helps you please share!

I have been using Bayberry Naturals cleansers (the green tea and soothing milk) for a while now. They are very non-irritating. I found these while I was searching for a cleanser with roman chamomile, which really works at diminishing the redness in my cheeks! http://www.bayberrynaturals.com/cleansers.html |

I used to have rosacea, back when I first joined this forum in 2005. My dermatologist at the time said it was one of the worst cases she had ever seen. I made a lot of changes to my skincare and diet, and now I have no signs of rosacea, unless I spend more than an hour in freezing cold weather (like when skiing). I would say that I am effectively cured. I made so many changes so it is hard to pinpoint one thing that cured me, but here is what I think helped the most:
Metrogel, a topical antibiotic gel that is available by prescription. I only had to use this for a couple of years and now I no longer need it. At first I used it every day until my skin showed no signs of the rosacea, and then over time I tapered off.
Quality skin care products aimed at sensitive skin. Here are some of my favorites that I think really helped to cure the rosacea:
~ Pure Skin Formulations (PSF) Vitamin C serum applied in the morning. Application is important. Wash skin with a gentle cleanser and wait at least 10 minutes before applying the serum. Then after applying the serum wait at least 10 more minutes before applying moisturizer and makeup.
~ Aveeno's Positively Radiant Moisturizer with SPF 15
~ Jane Iredale PurePressed Base foundation
~ Ultrarefined emu oil from LB Processors
I use Retin-a and retinol products, but only the gentle ones and not every day.
I love samples and trying out new products and I've found some great stuff that way, but I have to be careful not to overdo it. I space out samples and new products so that there are two or three days in between, and I never try out new stuff when my skin is irritated.
Supplements that I think helped:
~ New Chapter's multivitamins
~ Carlson's Fish Oil
~ Carlson's Vitamin D3
Avoid white sugar, white flour, and white rice as much as possible. Eat as much organic, fresh fruits and vegetables as possible.
