Anyone know what this is and how to use it? I have seen people talk about it and love it (It removes hair from bikini areas and such) but never see anyone tell where they get it.. how to use it.. Anyone use this product?

Hi Cheri,
Because this intrigued me ... I did a google search ... and after a protracted series of sub-searches, I *think* I've found the product that you're talking about.
It wasn't designed for bikini lines ... it's actually marketed to Black males to avoid razor bumps ... and if you live in the U.S. it's available at Walgreens.
Here's how it's described:
Quote: |
Depilatory.
Formulated for black men to help stop razor bumps.
Recommended by the National Medical Association - Magic, the shaving powder recommended by the National Medical Association as an effective shaving method for the relief of razor bumps in Black men. |
Here's how you use it:

Depilatory.
Formulated for black men to help stop razor bumps.
Recommended by the National Medical Association - Magic, the shaving powder recommended by the National Medical Association as an effective shaving method for the relief of razor bumps in Black men.
Instructions
Mix 2 heaping teaspoons of shaving powder with an equal amount of cool water.
Apply the creamy mixture to bard. Leave on for 5-7 minutes. Remoisten if the mixture dries.
Remove with spatula. Rinse shaving area thoroughly. Do not wash off with soap.
If any beard remains, wait 36 hours before next Magic Shaving Powder application.
Keep tightly capped. |
Here are the ingredients:
Quote: |
Corn Starch Zea Mays , Calcium Carbonate , Calcium Thioglycolate , Calcium Hydroxide , Guanidine Carbonate , Nonoxynol-10 , Fragrance |
Here are the warnings:
Quote: |
Do not use this product with a razor.
Contains Thioglycolate. Follow directions carefully. This product may cause skin irritation. If skin is inflamed or has skin abrasions, facial sores or pustules, consult a dermatologist before using this product.
Wait 36 hours after using a razor, shaving product or device.
Do not use after perspiring heavily. Do not wash face before use.
Do not use after prolonged sun exposure.
Do not use with any after-shave product containing alcohol.
Timing is critical to avoid excessive irritation. For external use only. If powder of the mixture gets into eyes, rinse repeatedly with water. Magic Shaving Powder is used only to remove facial hair.
If you have never used Gold Magic Shaving Powder or used a depilatory within the last twelve months, we suggest you use platinum skin conditioning shaving powder. Before using Gold Magic Shaving Powder for the first time, a skin patch test must be performed. Wait at least 36 hours after using a razor or depilatory product before doing this test. Mix a half teaspoon of Gold Magic with equal amount of cool water. Apply to one inch section of beard area. Leave on for no longer than 5 minutes. Moisten if necessary. Rinse away thoroughly. Wait 24 hours. If there are no signs of irritation or redness, follow directions.
Keep away from children. |
And here's the URL for the Walgreen's site page of this product:

Hope this helps.

OUCH! I tested this years ago- it did not work on my thick, coarse hair.
It burned badly and left a blistered red rash that lasted for a week. I was lucky not to get a scar from it.
And it did not even remove all the hair!
I have never had this problem from Nair or Neet.
Avoid, Avoid, Avoid!!! |

How the hack do these things happen?Do you guys have like a radar that lets you know when a product you are advertising is discussed here? This is getting a bit annoying.I think posts like these should be deleted-too many "new users" that do a couple of posts like these and then disappear into thin air. ![Shame on you](images/smiles/eusa_naughty.gif) |

I lOVE magic powder and have been using it for probably 8 years or so. I have burnt myself leaving it on too long, but nothing too bad. My only bad burn was the first time I used it I did a spot test and when I liked the results I did the whole area including the spot tested area...big mistake. I buy the powder as well and the paste in the tube just depending on what I feel like using. It does smell pretty bad though....lol

I'm using this on my bikini area and really like it. Much better than Nair or Neet. I think I've been using it about 8 months. Never had a burn or problem. |

I use it on my legs and under arms and it works great. It leaves my skin really smooth after (thats why I like it). I'm still still scared to use it on my bikini line though
It is messy and smells kinda bad, almost like I am mixing a batch of hair bleach.
Its cheap, and nice to have around. |

Annlee,
How do you do your legs? Do you apply in sections or all at the same time? I'd like to try this.Thanks. |

I use the powder/platinum one. It comes in a cylinder container that is silver and green. There are instructions on the container.
Basically you mix the powder with water and apply to your skin. The first time I did it I applied it to one leg. The only annoyance is that you have to keep it moist, so I had a spray bottle with water on hand.
I leave it on for about ten minutes and then scrape it off. I used a plastic blade, but any old plastic card/credit card will do. Then of course I wash the rest off. I've been using it since last summer, now I do both legs at the same time...and underarms, you just have to keep it moist.
Its almost like the first time I tried the Aspirin mask my face felt super smooth...that's how my skin feels after using the magic powder but even smoother.
I think I like it even more because it's under $3.00...cheap and it works, ![Very Happy](images/smiles/biggrin.gif) |

Any tips with using this on the bikini line?

TERRIBLE! Don't use this product. I had heard such great reviews of the product saying it is safe for the bikini area etc. well, i did the test patch which went fine, however when i went back to do everything afterward some of my more "sensitive" areas were burned!! It must have happened when i was washing the chemicals off of my skin, i even tried to protect these areas with vasoline but it didn't help. now it hurts so bad just to walk around, and i am avoiding drinking water because going to the bathroom makes me want to cry. DONT USE IT.
also... any tips to treat my newly acquired chemical burn would be greatly appreciated. thanks! |

does anyone know how much water to use when using magic shaving powder? I tried it for the first time today and it was really runny and not pasty mixture like it should be. It worked well, but i'm sure it will work better once I get use to it. Any suggestions please let me know!! ![Smile](images/smiles/smile.gif) |

The instructions quoted above in hpjrt's post say to mix 2 heaping teaspoons of shaving powder with an equal amount of cool water. See above for additional instructions. HTHs and welcome to the forum. ![Smile](images/smiles/smile.gif) |
