After I apply a Vit C serum (any) my skin becomes red and burns like hell but only for several minutes and then comes back normal. Should I continue using it??? |

I have a little tingling but nothing like that. What kind of C Serum are you using? |

Sometimes I get some stinging with Vit C, but I've noticed it's tied to those times I've been a little more vigorous with exfoliating, or more heavy-handed with the Retin-A. |

Cosmetic Skin Solution C+E Ferulic. I had the same reaction to Obagi C and DIY serums. |

Can you dilute it a bit with another lotion?
I don't like the idea of anything that "burns like hell" It seems unnecessary....
Are you noticing any positives? Or Negatives, besides the burn? |

Perhaps you are reacting to one of the components. I had read that some react to the Ferulic but I am not sure that is accurate. I would not use it if it burns like hell. |

Ascorbic Acid isn't for everyone - if it burns, please don't use it. Another form of topical Vitamin C might be a better option for you - MAP is usually well tolerated by more sensitive skins.

Positives .. it gives me a glow!
My skin has been overreactive recently and I'm thinking, now that ShastaGirl mentioned it, it's due to the heavy use of Retin A.

Thanks, bellableu, I'll have to check it out. Do you, by any chance, know any Vit C products for sensitive skin? |

Avalon Organics Vitamin C line uses MAP. The serum gets good reviews at MakeupAlley, and I like the Cream. |

I don't like the burns like hell, but since your skin goes back to normal so quickly and the burning doesn't linger it sounds like it isn't causing any problems. |

The only serum I've been able to tolerate with a high dose of vitamin C is Paula's Choice Resist Super Antioxidant Concentrate. It has several forms of C along with a large dose of other antioxidants. I'm on my third tube and love it.
Every serum I've tried that contains ascorbic acid is very irritating and causes me large, painful, cystic-type bumps within days. |

I did have the same experience of "burning like hell".
When I started Retin-A 1.5 years ago; in the first week when I applied DIY Vitc c serum on my face, it burned like no tomorrow.
I have not used any vit C serum since then; however, I may start using it soon as I believe I have already "retinized"...no flakes & no red face. |

For about 3 years once or twice a week depending on my skin condition.

summer2004, do you have senstitive skin? May be, Retin A And LAA do not go together for us. |

Hi RussiaSunshine,
Before using Retin-A, I had a tough skin, 15% glycolic acid of Neostrata did not sting me at all & I could leave it on for hours.
Once I start to use Retin-A, my skin became VERY sensitive, even clay mask did burn me bit.
As I mentioned, I think I have been retinized as my skin barrier has been enhanced a lot after taking MSM, Vit C & Omega 3-6-9. |

No, I have not stopped using Retin-A. I am using it every night.
Once I receive the ingredients (in 2 weeks), then I will make one to see it still burns my face.
I will start slow - 10% LAA + 7% THDA (I hope that this oil Vit C is a mild one).
In the past, the percentage of LAA was 15% to 17%.

RussianSunshine,
I think my skin is much more sensitive & fragile than yours.
You said that your skin got burnt for few minutes & then returned to normal.
I was not; it lasted for 30+ mins; once or two occasions, I had to rinise it off. |

I meant to say in my earlier reply (and forgot) that it is normal to experience a sensation ranging from tingling to mild burning when using a vit C serum that uses ascorbic acid. The reason being for the ascorbic acid to penetrate the pH needs to be low (usually somewhere around 3-4). This, compared with the normal pH of skin (between 4.5 and 6.5, though most people are around 5.5), is slightly acidic, hence the burning. If the sensation is going away and you're not experiencing any other problems, I'd say stick with it. |

Nirasha - Please post what Vit C product you are using. TIA
RussianSunshine - Have you tried using the Vit C product at the opposite time of day when you apply the Retin A? |

It seems that Riley found a little bottle of gold that really does the trick for over stressed skin! |
