This is one for those people who can't wash their hair with shampoo everyday or who use the CO cleansing method. Spray in dry shampoo is sometimes an option. I've always thought it was a nifty idea but never bothered to actually take the time to check the ingredients list.
The active ingredient in Dry Shampoo is....oryza sativa. In other words, rice flour. The rest are just propellants, alcohol and preservatives. Well it doesn't take a genius to realise that you don't need to pay $12.00 for a can of spray on rice flour. Especially when you can buy it for about $2 a kilo.
I suffer from the oily roots dry ends syndrome of anyone with wavy hair. So today I tried the rice flour rubbed into my roots and then brushed out as a way to remove the excess oil. Yep it works. I used about 1/2 tsp and massaged it in with my hands then used a boar bristle brush to brush it out. No trace of rice flour left behind and I imagine you could even scent it with a few drops of essential oil blended into a large amount of rice flour to give it a bit more of something. As a day two wash method, it's pretty good.. |

Yes, I've used talcum powder in the past. But I'm definitely going to give the rice flour a try - great tip NotMeNotYou! |

I've made rice flour before by just taking dry rice and grinding it in a coffee grinder. |

Do you think I could put the flour in a salt shaker or something? |

I thought I would chime in here with something I learned over at a long hair forum.
I have waist length brown hair and sometimes white powders don't brush out so well so someone suggested using cocoa as a dry shampoo and it really works.
I just put a tiny tiny bit on fingers then flip head over and rub. It smells yummy and doesn't leave any white specks. My hair is so dark that I have to be careful with the amount though because it will make my brown a little lighter at the scalp if I am not careful.

I will definitely try this! My hair is long and thick, so needless to say, it takes forever to dry..
Does the baby powder actually cleanse the hair? I have always thought people used it for oiliness reason. |

No, it doesn't cleanse the hair - it merely soaks up the oil. |

This isn't DIY, but Avon sells, under the mark label a product called Mega Volume Next Day Spray. The product blurb says: "Refresh hair between shampooing, helps remove build-up and reduces the appearance of oil."
"45 of 72(62%)customers would recommend this product to a friend."
I use this on occasion. I'm not sure that it actually cleans the hair but it does fluff it up so that it looks cleaner and it helps to get rid of the separating strands and flat look.
The ingredients are:
SD ALCOHOL 40-B
WATER/EAU
CREATINE
LAMINARIA DIGITATA EXTRACT
PELVETIA CANALICULATA EXTRACT
DIMETHICONE/VINYL DIMETHICONE CROSSPOLYMER
PARFUM/FRAGRANCE
ACRYLATES/C10-30 ALKYL ACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER
PEG-40 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL
PPG-26-BUTETH-26
C12-14 PARETH-12
SODIUM POLYSTYRENE SULFONATE
TRIETHANOLAMINE |

That's an interesting tip about using cocoa for dark hair.
Lulu's Organic Hair Powder lists white clay, baking soda, USDA Organic corn starch and rice powder, and Oregon Tilth Certified Organic horsetail powder and essential oils for scent.
beauty mask, do you mean how do you apply baby powder (or any powder) to your hair? Adding to the tips above, here are Lulu's application tips:
Quote: |
We suggest you sprinkle a dime to quarter size amount of powder into the palm of your hand. Then, rub your two hands together so a thin layer of powder is covering both palms. You then work your hands through the root of your hair. If you need more, repeat.
We have many friends and fans who like to apply the powder with a blush brush or powder brush directly to the root. If you prefer this technique we suggest you dip the brush in the powder then shake before applying. The same way you would apply powder to your face.
We also suggest brushing your hair after the application. If you see ANY trace of powder it will subside with the absorption of oil.
DO NOT apply the powder directly to your roots! This is a common mistake and a b-line to a George Washington powdered wig look!

I use bicarb soda.
My fringe starts to look greasy really quickly after my hair is washed, sometimes within the same day. Using the bicarb makes it look clean and also gives it some body. I've used the spray in dry shampoos and honestly, I think the bicarb is just as good, or better (not to mention the huge price difference). |
