Hi,

Has anyone had any luck with using authentic black african soap for acne?

I just bought some through Coastal Scents which claims to be free trade and from Guyana. It seems like a nice soap and it lathers really well but I'm not sure if it's helping my acne or not? I've only been using it for about 2 weeks and I've actually found my acne to be a bit worse...it was just the TOTM though so that may have been a factor since I usually break out more then. Maybe my skin is just purging all the bad stuff out?? I've read such great reviews about this soap and was really hoping it would work really well so I'm not ready to give up on it yet. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone that used this kind of soap found that it took a while to work or that your skin got a bit worse before it got better?

I really need for something cheap to work...I spend so much money on skin care products that I need at least one cheaper thing to work!

Thanks

Smile

Oh dear, wish you would have purchased your black soap from Nassab dot com. THEY have the authentic black soap from Africa. I bought a ball of it several years ago and it did clear up my skin somewhat but my preference now is to use another product with a BHA in it. Good luck with what you purchased; I hope you have success with it.

I recently purchased African Black Soap made by The Shea Moisture Co. I found it at Ross Dress For Less of all places. The blurb on the box stated that the soaps are family recipes from the Grandmother who started a small business in Sierra Leone in 1916.

Ingredients on the box: Black Soap, Soaps of Coconut & Palm, Shea Butter, Glycerin, Salt, Carbon, Coriander, Vitamin E., Iron Oxides.

Ingredients from website:

African Black Soap is made from roasted cocoa (chocolate) pods, plantain skin extract and papaya enzymes. The plantain skins are sun dried and then mixed with palm and palm kernel oils. This is where the soap gets it's rich color. Plantain skins are rich in vitamins A, E and iron. The soap has medicinal and antiseptic properties and is very gentle in character.

It looked interesting, it also had Shea Butter and Plantain Enzymes, so I purchased it in a mixed 3 pack with a bar of Shea and a bar of Mango. It cost approx. $5.50 for the 3 pack. I've only tried the African Black Soap and I was surprised to see that it also has an exfoliate which is a big plus for me.

I have only been using it for a week and I like it very much. Not irritating and it leaves my skin soft.

Did a bit of reseach on the Shea Moisture Co.
and found that their products are also available at Target.

Nassab dot come huh....I'll look into it SuzieQ. From everything that I've read thought I think the stuff I got is authentic. It certainly looks it. But either way my face just keeps getting worse so I may have to stop it for a while and see if it's the soap that's doing it. I hope it's not just that my face is purging all the junk that was underneath and if I kept at it a bit longer it would get better.

How long do people usually stick with a product to see if it's working?

Whoops! Nassab changed their website url. Now its http://www.sheabutterr.com/

Its preferable to use something new for at least a full month. It takes about that long for your skin to go thru its full renewal cycle.

I use nubian brand, and I had these weird bumps on my upper arms for a year after my first pregnancy and with the use of the soap they are gone, but Im also pregnant again, so maybe hormones are into play, dunno.

I just discovered the African Black Soap from SheaTerraOrganics and I am in love!

Now that I've got my skin de-congested with the OCM, this is like the cherry on top. I use it twice a day and it micro-micro exfoliates; you cannot feel any granules! It also deep cleans pores better than ANYTHING I've ever used. I've completely stopped using my Clarisonic. For the first time since I was 12, I have no congested pores/blackheads on my nose! My skin looks like velvet. The best comment so far, and I've had a bunch, was at the spa today. I'd had a massage and when I went up to the desk to pay, a woman there said, 'oh you've had a facial!' Nope I had just showered and cleansed with the ABS!!!

I use the liquid version with Lemongrass oil, which for some reason is under Shower Elixirs on their new website. They also carry a liquid with Rose Hip oil, and the pure bar form - also in logs.
I highly, highly recommend, especially if you have oily, congested, or acne prone skin. I got a whitehead after doing the OCM, washed with the ABS and in the morning it was gone! The soap also fades the marks from zits, and just generally evens the skintone. It is like everything you've ever wanted in skincare in one product!
Best of all, it is sourced directly from Africa and is Fair Trade and from cooperatives that benefit the women who make it.
All of SheaTerra products are. Love, love, love the African Black Soap. I already have 2 backup bottles!

That reminds me! I bought a huge block of the authentic which had been back-ordered for a couple of months. So when it did finally come in, I was busy moving and had forgotten about it.
