"When we began our sunscreen investigation at the Environmental Working Group, our researchers thought we would ultimately recommend against micronized and nano-sized zinc and titanium dioxide. After all, no one has taken a more expansive and critical look than EWG at the use of nanoparticles in cosmetics and sunscreens, including the lack of definitive safety data and consumer information on these common ingredients, and few substances more dramatically highlight gaps in our system of public health protections than the raw materials used in the bizarre and burgeoning field of nanotechnology. But 18 months, 800 products, and nearly 400 peer-reviewed studies later, we find ourselves drawing a different conclusion, and recommending some sunscreens that contain nano-sized ingredients.”

IMO their safety still hasn't been proven, but there again the safety of many ingredients we use regularly hasn't either!
There are environmental concerns about nan-particles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide which we should probably consider too.
There's also at least one in-vitro study on nano zinc oxide that demonstrated it caused cancer when coming into contact with colon cells. While we don't generally eat our sunscreens, it is possible that some could be consumed if applied near our lips. Whether it would reach the colon or be enough to cause a problem isn't known yet. But, it's worth considering by anyone who considers physical sunscreens completely safe. |

I do know EWG is pretty radical about coming down on ingredients, it's pretty amazing when they retract their stance on anything!
I would be more concerned about nano zinc not in a cream/ointment base being inhaled than eating my sunscreen.
Zinc is in diaper rash ointments which are daily slathered on babies bottoms, that would be more of a concern as far as colorectal cancer than putting it on the face.
I am not anymore convinced topical application on the face is a cause of colorectial cancer, than I am that applying GHK-Cu to the face will cure it! |

???
What has been found, DarkMoon, is that GHK may be able to suppress cancer genes. "This does not mean that GHK in cosmetics will stop cancer, but it is a very positive finding about this molecule."
In Clin Exp Metastasis. 2010 Feb 9. a paper:
"A 'metastasis-prone' signature for early-stage mismatch-repair proficient sporadic colorectal cancer patients and its implications for possible therapeutics" by Hong Y, Downey T, Eu KW, Koh PK, Cheah PY (Department of Colorectal Surgery, Singapore General Hospital, Singapore, 169608, Singapore) the authors searched for substances that can reverse expression of those genes involved in metastasis.
To determine gene expression of normal and cancerous cells, they measured RNA produced by cells. To find substances that can reverse expression of those genes involved in metastasis, they used very reliable database developed at the Broad Institute (Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology) of 7000 genome wide expression profiles after treatment of 4 human cell lines with 1309 bioactive substances. Only two substances, GHK and securenine (an alkaloid) from the choice of 1309 were able to quiet down the genes involved in tumor spreading. The authors also mention low toxicity of GHK and the low concentration (1 micromolar) that produces desired effect.

Off topic, I know. But I couldn't let that comment slide. |

foxe,
I didn't intend to imply that SkinBio or Dr. P was making that outrageous claim! I was just using an example of how what takes place on our skin isn't necessarily in any way the same as what happens inside our bodies! Please don't take everything I say regarding CP's as some attack on them? I have a brand new bottle of SkinBio CP serum here in my house and plan on starting them well diluted in the next week or two. |

Sorry DM. I realize you were just using that for an example. good luck on your trial w/ CPs.
Edited to add:Personally, if GHK can suppress cancer genes, I wonder if using it topically could help ward off types of skin cancer? I know the study was on colorectral, but it makes me want to use the new Skin Signals cream even more since it has both GHK and 2nd gen CPs in it.

Thank you foxe, I do appreciate that, and I didn't intend to push buttons at all. It was the mention of zinc being ingested and causing colorectal cancer that made that very study on GHK-Cu come to mind!
I really wish (and I know the money is hard to come by) that more studies would be done on the second generation CP's! I can wish to be 21 again but that isn't going to make it happen! |
