I had posted about 5 months ago unhappy with my skin. I battled between IPl and the Obagi system. I met up with a derm who prescribed a really awesome retin-a with antioxidants and recently added an 8% HQ which I have applying every night. I have noticed some slight improvements in the lighting of my skin but not drastic as of yet. I thought I would see huge noticable improvements by now.
Is it normal for this to take a long time to get really noticable results? |

luvskincare what other products are you using in your regime? It's hard to say without knowing what else your using. Also people's skin does react to products differently as we all have different skin types. If you are seeing some improvement that is a good sign, as you know it is working, however sometimes things do take time and while we want it to work over night unfortunately it doesn't. Perhaps now take a photo of your skin and continue to use your products for a little longer and then take another picture and compare. Sometimes we may think it isn't working as quickly as we may like, however as we look at ourselves all day everyday and perhaps a photo or even someone else's opinion may tell you that the results are more dramatic than you may see. Just a thought.
Also I use retinol and I think I saw really dramatic results after about 6-8 months of continued use. My Dermatologist was quite happy with how my skin was coming along, however she did suggest to me to incorporate a Vitamin C serum into my routine as this does also help with pigmentation etc. |

My skin type is slighlty oily, large pores, and highly pigmented (permanent tan on face). I am also 34.
I currently use:
retin-a mixed with estridol, AlA, COQ10,etc.
8&HQ
sunblock
I have had 4 tca peels this year.
I like the idea of incorporating a Vit.c product but have found that I notice comedones when using it.
I thought I might see a lightening of my skin by a couple shades by now like I hear so many women say when using the Obagi Nuderm. |

With Retin A, depending on the strength your using, and where your starting from (i.e. the amount of damage etc) its very normal for it to take up to a year. In fact all the long term studies done on Retin A useage were where it was used nightly for a year. So at 4 months in, you got some time to go yet. I'm guessing your working with a derm, so you may want to speak to him about upping your dosage, but I've got to say hands down Retin A is one thing I'll never go without and having used it some 30 plus years, I have seen some wonderful things from it! |

Thank you
Do you remember when you really started to see results from the retin-a? and what improvements in the 30 years have you had?
I can tolerate this retin-a very well. No peeling, redness, etc. |

I had improvements from the first year of using it, and have had repeated results show up since then. I still get improvements, but I must stress that I worked with a derm. Just because your not peeling or going red doesn’t mean the Retin A isn’t working. That’s a big mistake people often believe that they need to do so for it to be working but the truth is you don’t. Sometimes you won’t get any results like that for a good year or 6 months into using it nightly. All I know is that I wouldn't be without it!

Hi, there!
I'm also four months in, and just starting to get consistently good (but not yet perfect) results for my acne. I understand that it can take tretinoin a good 6 months to soften/remove lines and a year to reduce hyperpigmentation.
(By comparison, it took me 3-4 years of nearly obsessive sun protection plus one winter of 8% AHA to fade my freckles about 70-80%.)
Hearing about the great long-term results is part of what keeps me going even when the going gets rough...
Cheers,
Kay |

Retin A isn't necessarily meant to help with hyperpigmentation. I think it's mostly for wrinkle reduction/prevention. You would probably get better results with hyperpigmentation by using a Vitamn C product that contains l-ascorbic acid in the morning. |

I will for sure carry on with retin-a. I also use 8%hydroquinone for the pigment issues.I was told that my hyperpigmentation is at the surface and not dermal so I figured with a strong prescription I would notice a quick result. |
