My Father used to extol the benefits of Magnesium (he was a chemist). But how do you apply it topically?

I know JR mentioned using a magnesium oil I believe on the ASG thread, I also think another product with magnesium is named by another member on the same thread.

Thanks for that link Keliu, very interesting! I spoke with one of my father's visiting nurses over a year ago and my son's UC came up she said instantly it's a magnesium deficiency! She at that time didn't mention the magnesium oil, but maybe was unaware of it's existence? He may get the link and a bottle for Christmas!

I had only heard of the connection to depression and actually anxiety disorders prior.

Have a look at this site Keliu + DarkMoon... The "magnesium gel" looks particularly interesting to me, as it's easily added to skin and hair care products. (Oil + Crystals available on this page also!)

Seems the gel is especially compatible for those of us who enjoy our "oils". Very Happy

http://thepowermall.org/thecenterforhealth/healthy_bodies/magnesium.htm

I actually found this site by accident when I was researching how to remove iodine from trace minerals. Seems the 'magnesium gel' is made with the "seaweed extract" that does the trick.. (Very Happy ) It's amazing how one tidbit of info can lead you to an abundance of learning. (There aren't enough free hours in the day for me Laughing )

Keliu, I remember fondly your Dad's advice about 'salt' that you shared with us Very Happy Please share more of your Dad's words of wisdom with us Wink

I've used Health & Wisdom's Magnesium Gel with Seaweed Extract as well as their other magnesium products and thought they were good products (although I don't care for their website!) but I am going to try the Ancient Minerals magnesium products that Jasminerosey mentioned on another thread just to see how they compare. From what I read, one of the ways the gels differ is that the Ancient Minerals gel is designed to not fully absorb and so is generally washed off (after 20 minutes or so) whereas I found the H&W mag gel does absorb.

BTW, here is Natalyn's review thread on the H&W mag gel: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=40041

Havana,

I am curious as to why it's a better option for it not to fully absorb especially after reading the magnitude of our deficiency and how difficult it is to obtain from either diet or supplementation? Smile

The gel sounds good - the blurb says you can add it to liquid soap for a good shampoo. Seeing as how I make my own shampoo with Castile Soap now, I'm going to give this a try.

Now, let's not get too carried away with my Father's wisdom - remember, this was a man who used to smoke his pipe while riding his exercise bike - wearing swimming goggles so the smoke wouldn't get in his eyes. Shock Laughing

It sounds as if it is used professionally by massage therapists and the like so that was just my impression after reading, DM. Here's part of the info from the Ancient Minerals site that led me in that direction:

Rinsing off magnesium oil or magnesium gel after use is a matter of personal preference, and depends on how much you apply and where it is applied on the body. Typically, the more magnesium oil or gel used per application, the higher likelihood you may prefer to rinse it off. In roughly twenty minutes your skin can take full advantage of topically applied magnesium, and it may be safely removed at that point. Keep in mind, also, that Ancient Minerals magnesium gel is designed not to be fully absorbed into the skin, so rinsing off after applying is a fairly common practice.

and

Ancient Minerals magnesium gel is a unique formulation designed to remain hydrated on the skin. Apply desired amount and rub into the skin thoroughly. Most users of magnesium gel choose to rinse or wipe off the skin with a moist towel after use.
If the magnesium gel begins to dry up during extended use, wet your hands slightly and rub your skin to rehydrate.

1/4 tsp. of Ancient Minerals magnesium gel delivers approximately 125 mg of elemental magnesium on the skin.

Thanks for posting that Havana! Smile

I am just wondering about using this beyond skin care, but to boost what we aren't getting from food or supplements?

Here is the RDA from NIH

There's a section on this page about topical versus oral magnesium that you might like, DM, with references at the bottom:
http://www.ancient-minerals.com/transdermal-magnesium/how-topical/

Lacy, that's a great study reference.

I believe you can increase your magnesium levels by soaking your body or body parts in epsom salts.

Absolutely - that's a very old time remedy.

Its been about 6 months since I've taken out my container of Magnesium Oil...I used it for a while, rubbing it on my belly or leg or arm right before bed, just for the Vitamin intake. It burns and is quite greasy, so after 20 mins or so I usually wiped it off. I had not thought of mixing into some skincare base, because it does burn. I'm interested in the gel though, and wondering if I could make my own with the sea kelp bioferment I have in my frig. I might mix some up tonight, and put it on some sore joints. Why not?....

MG - what brand of mag oil do you have? I am just wondering as I have been using H and W's brand for years and it isn't greasy at all. The only time it stings is if I apply it over broken skin. I am wondering if your oil has some other ingredients in it as well?

Everything I have read suggest that the magnesium is absorbed within 20 minutes. When the salts dry on your skin, they can make your skin feel sticky and uncomfortable so wiping or rinsing alleviates that. The optimal method of magnesium delivery (after an IV) is a foot soak which is very relaxing and efficient. I also apply mag gel or spritz mag oil on my whole body after showering.

O
What, if any, benefits have you noticed from using the mag oil, brenpatsa?

My sleep is so much improved when I am consistent with my foot soaks, which is especially appreciated during these lovely hormonal swings of perimenopause. My anxiety is reduced as well. I have also noticed less period cramping and fewer headaches. When I do have a headache, a foot soak helps a great deal as does applying oil to my temples and neck.
I also have been brushing my teeth with the oil . It tastes lousy but my gums have gotten heaalthier and my teeth looks less translucent in places.

Thanks, brenpatsa. What brand are you using for the food soaks? (The relief from the peri symptoms sounds great!)

Thanks brenpatsa,

That's quite a bit of great information! I was off for a good bit so just noticed the thread again. Smile

I wonder about the difference with some having sting and other brands not....maybe stronger concentration?

I used Pacific Magnesium Oil (puremagoil.com)
I think I overstated it when I said it " burns and is greasy," when it is more like a stinging sensation. That was my memory of it, but I had not used it for a while. When I tried it again last night, there was no burning and quick absorbtion. I stand corrected. Rolling Eyes Ingredients: Cold filterd condensed ocean water (magnesium chloride hexahydrate) and other naturally occuring trace minerals present in ocean water.

I use the mag products from Health and Wisdom. The owner Joan spends a lot of time on Ttapp's forum so I ordered from her company and have been very satisfied. I checked out the Ancient Minerals site last night and their products look pure and reputable as well. Its interesting to me that the AM site doesn't give directions for the foot soak but rather focuses on spraying the oil on the body. My understanding is that the spray method results in lesser magnesium absorption than the foot soak method. I make sure to spray the bottoms of my feet if I am unable to soak before bedtime though.
